Have you whitewashed a yellowish brick fireplace?

Since the floor has to be replaced, this is the time to get rid of the yellow, or tan, or whatever pukey color it is. It is IMPOSSIBLE to paint the walls anything other than a butter yellow or white, and I am really tired of buttery yellow. I would like to experiment with some brick, but I don't have a spare wall to experiment with. I'm afraid that whitewashing this particular color brick will just make it worse. There is a little dark brown and rust color in the brick, but mostly it's yellow.

My other option is staining the brick red and then whitewashing. My dh will be resistant. I know that without even suggesting this to him. I'll just have to do it when he's gone and it has to look great so when he walks in he is so impressed that he won't remember he doesn't like painted brick. IYKWIM
