Screw pops repair

So our 11 months old house has a few screw pops that we'd will be putting on the punch list for the builder on the 1 year anniversary.

What's the best way to repair them? - just so I can be knowledgeable - when reviewing the repair work & process.

Most of the pops look like bumps (top 2 bumps in pic below) more than actually breaking out through the drywall.

My biggest concern is that I have some pops are near adjacent walls & there appears to be some slight separation between these 2 walls - like the screws aren't holding the walls tight enough to each other any more.

When you see three pops adjacent to each other it suggests (to me) that the guy was looking for the stud. :-)

I would put in a new sheet rock screw INTO the stud and then using a nail punch set the existing fasteners beneath the surface of the sheet rock.

When inserting that new screw, make sure you push in on the sheet rock to set it against the stud.

Saltidawg - the picture was something i grabbed from the net to demonstrate the bulge that I was speaking of :)

From my current research, I see one suggestion which is to install into the sheetrock a new screw above & below the popped screw & mud over & repaint.

But what to do with the faulty screw? What would your nail punch do there? Confused ??

laurie if you are talking about a naill pop here and there - then there is no urgency on having those fixed. If you see a pattern - or a bunch of nail pops in a row - then you might want to see if there is some other issue cuasing the pops. Sometimes a slow drip leak can cause the drywall to absorb the water - make it heavy - and then you might get a bunch of pops in a row (usually with some discoloration). I understand what you mean about the people messing up the house and the schedule. It's not just the fixing of the pop - it is the sanding, then the painting - and the mess that these guys leave behind. It's also about having someone wait around - sometimes for no shows - that is an absolute pain in the rump. I would suggest having them fix nail pops that are really hard for you to get at - or those in high visibility areas that just look bad. Who wants to climb up a ladder 20' to fix a nail pop? But if you have pops in closets ar other areas that don't bother you - then fix them yourself on your own schedule. Or - find a good handy person who will do it - and make sure they work cleanly and clean up when they are done. Remember the show Murphy Brown and the live in, full time painter? Somebody like that.

New construction and we actually had already painted these rooms! It had been at least three weeks since the final coat on the drywall in the bedroom, and 6 weeks in the kitchen. It is very disheartening when the end seems to be in sight and then this starts. I am very scared it is going to happen all over the place. They were finishing the main floor before they start on the basement, so they will be around for awhile. I have a feeling that there is nothing to do but pray it isn't going to happen any more, it just makes me sick to even think about it.

Thanks paintguy, The co we hired was responsible for patching all the pops and seams - and did so. I was home during the process and they didn't install additional screws. When we do our patching, we dimple the drywall, rescrew the screw, patch/sand, wait, reapply/sand and then paint. Not sure if this is the right way to do it or not, however we haven't had a pop reappear a month later. They were telling me something about the moisture of the paint causing the drywall to soften and thus allowing any marginal screws to pop through. While sounding plausible, my bs meter is going off as we amateurs have never had additional screw pops show up a month after painting - regardless of whether it was an area we patched or not. I'm also not pleased with the areas they did repair a pop as they are completely obvious in certain lighting situations. I'm completely stumped. And dismayed that we paid a highly recommended and vetted company to perform a task that us DIY'ers have done better in the past on our own.

just properly prune off the broken stuff.. and call it mother natures way of shaping your future ... riddle me this bat man ... if the plant broke under bending ... by whatever cause ... then how much less will it bend.. with a bolt thru it ... IMHO ... it wont.. and it will break again ... i would rather watch and learn how nature does these things.. rather than looking at hardware .. all that said ... i learned a lot of stuff by experimenting ... so if you decide to do such.. keep a photo journal.. and keep us posted .. over the years.. on how it is all done ... the whole chainsaw killing hardware ... is very important on something that will turn into a large tree that will eventually get chainsawed.. or chipped ... i grow plant of conifers.. that will never get that size ... but also... i burn dead things.. rather than putting them into the garbage... where some city might put them thru a shredder for the city compost program ... make decisions that provide a safe future in this regard ... ken

It's pretty easy to scrape the joint cement off the popped screw, and either screw it in more, or remove it.

The joint cement is realatively 'soft'.

More often then not, a "nail" pop is a nail as opposed to a screw.

If it is a popped nail, it will push the head of the nail beneath the paper surface of the sheet rock. Off course if it is a popped screw, less likely - you can screw it in OR out.

If you do not do this, after you add a screw above and below how will you mud over it if it is standing proud of the paper surface?

I got the impression that screwing it further in may risk breaking that dry wall location - weakening that particular area - True?

If indeed you have put in new drywall screws above and below the culprit, presumably the drywall is being held "in" against the stud by those tow new screws.

Even if the new screws are not holding the sheet rock against the stud, they are serving to hold the sheet rock stationery - something the popped nail was no longer doing.

That popped nail (or screw) is now superfluous and it really doesn't matter in or out.

I wouldn't try to drive a screw below flush with a nail set, I'd remove it after properly setting a new screw.

Likely you missed it, but after putting in a screw both above and below the popped nail, it makes no matter about the original screw/nail. lol

Either remove or drive in below surface.
