60" Wolf range--do I "need" a backsplash? I just want paint

like Plain English Design's dark blue/gray Spitalfields kitchen. I heard back from them and they used a glossy paint in that area, no steel or back-painted glass. Is there a requirement for a backsplash? Do any of you have this stove without one? Thanks.

I don't have a 60" Wolf but I do have a 36" Caldera gas cooktop. We do a LOT of high heat wok cooking and also have a Miele built in deep fat fryer. We use all of this frequently and have done so for 7 years. We have no backsplash. Only paint on sheetrock. There has been no change at all in the quality of the painted wall since it was installed 7 yrs ago. I have BM Regal Matte paint that is scrubbable after 30 days. I regularly scrub it with a soapy dishcloth. There is no reason that you too can't have a painted backsplash . I have it throughout my kitchen. Here is only one of 100's of pics. Plain paint will scorch and not pass code. Even though the drywall isn't flammable, the paint can be. All you need to do is to look at the pics on the Appliance Forum with people complaining about the stainless discoloring.

You need some type of non combustible surface behind the range. Some type of steel painted with high heat paint could qualify and still work for the look that you want.

It looks great! In fact, picture perfect....keep going. And send your DD over here! I wish I had an artsy craftsy daughter! I have two sportsy girls (not a scrapbooking/painting/decorating bone in their bodies). It used to make me madly crazy when it was book report time--they would throw some pics on a cardboard piece and proclaim they were done. I would have spent 10 hours on something like that as a kid LOL. It probably drove MY mom crazy (she was doctor and couldn't care less about art!) The Quiet Moments color looks really nice--just a teaser I know, but can't wait to see the finished product...then are you done?

amysrq- Oh, P&L tile, that stuff is so beautifully made and seems durable and sturdy (from the samples I was able to fondle at a showroom). I agree with punamytsike, depending on the level of variation between the tiles, it may be worth considering dropping the ones that have the highest contrast in randomly instead of grouping them. But, that depends on both the level of variation and your tolerance for tileative dissonance. Our upstairs bath is tiled in 4" white marble, all different kinds. Of course it was such a steal that I had to buy it, and I carefully culled out ones I wanted to use under the towel racks, where the towels would cover them. Our old school tile guy just as carefully put them in randomly, he explained that the best way to hide variation is in plain sight. After seeing the end result, I agreed. This is a highly personal decision, and one that only you can make after some contemplation, my real advice is to keep your mind open and play with tile placement often till you find what pleases your eye. amen, aloha! my darling meowzer! Yes, I saw that and commented, both on my original thread *and* the thread you started! I am so appreciative and that is exactly what I am looking for! It is a little late in the game for me to change my mind now. :( But tis ok...my cabs are GORGEOUS and I am thinging...maybe we could add a glaze later? Is that possible? Anyway, please see my posts to you on both threads. I am so happy you found it! thank you pillog, always happy to have your input. My cooktop will be on an island, so no worry about heat! Where my sink is...yes, there will be a change in cabinet height...and we talked about doing something decorative there...but with mirror, not sure if that would work. Maybe seamless pane of mirror for entire backsplash and then behind sink...maybe small mirror tiles??? thank you gr8! I am super duper excited and soo appreciate your help and enthusiasm!

This is the most peacefilled spa kitchen like I have ever seen. You have done so great with your choice of paint and counters and cabinet colors. It was obviously made for this tone of tile. English building codes may be different. And there's probably no cooking going on there either.

They may also be using AGA-type cookers which don't have the same extreme flame-y-ness that the typical US 60 inch pro-style range has.

Just get a piece of metal, paint it (you might consider a hi-temp formula for the paint, or just resign yourself to renewing it from time to time if it discolors from the heat) and you're good.

I don't like the look of most backsplashes, either.

International Residential code for cooking appliances requires that you follow the installation specifications that come with your appliances. Your code may be more strict. Ours is not.

The Wolf Subzero specs say nothing that I can find about minimal clearances to a vertical surface behind the range.

Only a vertical dimension to overhead horizontal (directly and to each side) combustible surfaces.

M1901.2 Cooking appliances. Cooking appliances shall be
listed and labeled for household use and shall be installed in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The installa-
tion shall not interfere with combustion air or access for oper-
ation and servicing. Electric cooking appliances shall comply
with UL 1026 or UL 858. Solid-fuel -fired fireplace stoves
shall comply with UL 737.

The 60" range specs a minimum 10" backguard if installing against drywall. What about sheet glass over your painted wall? Pricey, but it could be a stunning look.

Actually a piece of back painted glass 60" wide from marble backsplash top to the bottom of the range hood would not even be all that expensive.

Trailrunner, if you are out there ... Did you use Classic or Select Regal matte paint? I'm wondering if the newer low VOC Select is as good/durable. Did you paint yourself and was it easy to work with? I'm currently using Aura and it is a bear to apply smoothly due to its extremely fast drying time!
