Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) can do it. It's been 5 or 6 years since I played with the program but did exactly what you're asking. Since that time, there have been any number of upgrades, so I wouldn't have any idea how to tell you to do it. Heck, I wouldn't remember if I had the old program LOL. I didn't really work with full drawings, but single or a few interspersed lines and circles. The objective was to convert raster drawings(lineart, which is what you're talking about) into vector drawings (cartoon-like). The difference is raster images are made up of pixels, which is what your drawing becomes after you scan it in. And, vector images are made of natural-looking lines and splines, which are smooth arcs and straight lines. Doing that is an elementary function, as Flash is a very powerful application. Adobe products are very expensive, but you can download a free 30-day trial of Adobe Flash. Plus, there are numerous tutorials on the internet. That link is to only a few of them. You may also find Flash tutorial forums for individual help. Adobe Streamline was a program designed just for raster to vector conversion, but they discontinued Streamline after adding the same capability to their Illustrator product. You can download a free trial of Illustrator and you can also find lots of tutorial sites. CorelTrace is Corel's equivalent to Adobe Streamline. You may be able to purchase discontinued versions of either/both on ebay or Amazon.com. Some lesser known but much less expensive applications AlgoLab MagicTracer TraceLine It's possible an image editing program you have is also capable (assuming you have one LOL) with the integration of a plugin. You'd have to find a plugin designed for that. Segmation is one, but you can probably find one for free or at least a time trial version. I use Adobe Photoshop, Corel Photo Paint, and Corel Paint Shop Pro. These are examples of image editing programs, all of which provide a free 30-day trial download. Hope I helped

OK, let's see if we can explain this for you Gillian. The 'slots' are to insert memory cards in, these are usually associated with digital cameras so you would indeed download onto the computer that way. However you can also use these as storage devices the same as any other medium can be used. Most people do not do this as they keep these cards for the camera, a good idea really. USB ports are for connecting many different items to the computer. Speakers, scanners, mice, thumb drives, external drives and the list goes on. Data can be transferred into the computer from a device connected by a USB port or transferred from the computer to a device connected. Both uses are totally acceptable. What to back up? Address book, Favourites/Bookmarks, photos or funny gif or jpg images you have found. Save any data you have created like poems, stories, artwork. In fact any things you would not like to lose if the hard drive failed tomorrow. Your DVD-RW drawer can accept blank DVDs or CDs for you to use as a storage for your data. Personally I prefer the CD over all other forms of storage because it is simple, safe (so far) and blank CDs are not expensive. A DVD tends to hold too much data for my liking making finding an item more of a chore, but that is purely a personal preference. We all do things to suit ourselves and you will find the best method for yourself too as time passes.

I don't think there is a quick site solution to what you are asking for. My morning coffee reading for the past two years has started on gardenweb and taken off from there, using links and keyword searches in google. It's been a lot of fun, and I've figured out many things that will be useful to me. One of the first things we did when we bought our house was to have all the old, smoke-stinky wallpaper taken out. It was from the 1980's. If it had been from the 1880's when the house was built, I might have tried to keep it. Anyway, I can't remember if it was apartmenttherapy or gardenweb that put me on to Farrow&Ball paints, but I hate to think what might have happened if I had not used their stabilising primer on my 120 y.o. bare plaster walls. Apparently old plaster can be extremely alkali, and can cause all kinds of problems when you go to paint. The primer I used neutralized and "fixed" the plaster, so that paint systems could go on without being subject to some alkali chemical reaction. Also the colors were great for a historic home. So this was one little tidbit I picked up from my browsing that was a big help. Another think I figured out over time was the use of solatubes. I did not think I could use them in this house, because the main places I would want them (kitchen and conservatory) are on a lower floor of the house. But in my browsing I just recently noticed they can have a 20' run and still be quite bright. And what could be more appropriate for a conservatory than natural sunlight pouring in. (Incidentally, the tube diameter is 10 3/4", a challenge to run through the second floor, but I have a plan to make it work.) So, I don't live on the ocean or operate a lighthouse, but I'm gonna have a least 4 Fresnel lenses in my house. How cool is that? Reading Victorian house blogs has been very useful to me. Craig and Yvonne's, The Devil Queen, and especially the Petch House are all great blogs to check. Greg over at the Petch House is wonderfully meticulous in both his execution and in his writing about it. Some of these blogs have lists of links to other old house reno blogs. Reading about what other people have done to their houses over time has given me a wonderful sense of the flow and natural order of work on these houses, and what some of the unexpected twists and turns might be. From reading these I've decided to have a consult with a structural engineer before I do any more to my house. Also, from reading modvic.com, I decided to have an architect use 3D software to model my house as-is and as-planned, down to plumbing run locations for any remodeling. Modvic was a great restoration, but they did not have a computerized 3-d model of the house, and ran into issues both when placing a new stairway, and some plumbing runs. i think the cost and delay resulting was much more than what it costs to have someone come out and measure and plunk it into a computer program. Lessons learned. I think you might enjoy the renewable energy for the home forum here on gardenweb. I spend the most time in the old house forum, then kitchens and baths, and finally, home decorating. Ah, home decor, that elevated place you get to when all the functions of the house are in order and you can turn your eyes to the icing on the cake. What luxury to think about curtains instead of new 20 amp circuits. "What should I put on my mantel for the most eye-pleasing effect?" instead of "how the heck do I get this fireplace working and mantel restored?" Someday I will be there. And to me, no discussion of home decorating is complete without mention of the Cote de Texas blog. Finally, somebody who writes about home decor in terms that an engineer can understand. Check out her top ten #4 entry on curtains. Finally, I know why something looks right to me, in very clear terms and boundaries. So, I don't think there is one place you can go to read and find what you want to know in an afternoon. I think it's more of an evolving process, and an enjoyable one. Best of luck!

Scrumptious Strawberry Liqueur 3 c fresh strawberries, stemmed & washed 1-1/2 c sugar 2 c 100 proof vodka 1 c water 1/2 tsp lemon zest 1 tsp orange zest 1 tsp fresh squeezed lemon juice Crush strawberries and sugar together in bowl. Let stand for about one hour. Transfer to clean 2-qt container and add vodka, water, lemon zest, orange zest, and lemon juice. Cover and let stand in a cool, dark place for 2 days, shaking frequently. Use a fine-mesh strainer to strain out solids. Discard. Transfer liqueur to clean container, cover, and let stand for 1 week. It's from the St. Paul Hotel which is a 5 star hotel in downtown St. Paul that I worked for back in 1993. This new recipe I made this summer was from an old cookbook so you can decide if you want to use the uncooked eggs or not. I made it in individual serving dishes rather than in the pie shell. The flavor was reminiscent of the "fruit fluffs" that used to be served in the tearooms of my youth. STRAWBERRY CHIFFON PIE One 9-inch baked pie shell 1 envelope unflavored gelatin ¼ cup cold water 3 eggs, separated ¾ cup sugar, divided 1 Tbs. lemon juice 1 cup crushed fresh strawberries Whole strawberries for garnish Soften the gelatin in the cold water. In the top of a double boiler, beat the egg yolks together with ½ cup of sugar and the lemon juice. Cook and stir over boiling water until the mixture thickens. Add the gelatin-water mixture and stir until it dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the strawberries. Pour into a large bowl and chill about 30 minutes, or until the mixture begins to set. Beat the egg whites until they hold stiff peaks, then beat in the ¼ cup of sugar, a little at a time, until the egg whites are stiff and glossy. Similar, I think this is an old tupperware recipe: a caramel-ey dip made with softened cream cheese, brown sugar and a bit of vanilla. I made this last year, from Mes Confitures. I thought the mint sounded odd, but the flavors all worked well (I think I'll use more pepper next time): 2lbs Strawberries, (weigh after washed, hulled & sliced in half ) 1 1/2 lb sugar (about 3 1/2 cups) 1 lemon zest and juice 8 fresh mint leaves, hand shredded 8 black peppercorns, freshly ground In a ceramic bowl, add the strawberries, lemon zest and juice, and sugar. Fold together just to mix and cover with parchment paper and let macerate overnight in the refrigerator. Next day, bring the preparation to a simmer in a preserving pot or large saucepan. Stir gently to dissolve all sugar for about 5 minutes. Strain through a sieve and hold the fruit separately while you return the syrup to the pan and bring to a boil, cooking on high til concentrated at 221F on a candy thermometer. Add the fruit back into the pot with the mint and ground pepper. Return to boil for about 5 minutes, stirring gently. Check the set. Fill clean, hot jars and process 10 minutes in a boiling water bath. And this one made our fair judge swoon. I've been making it for years so it's definitely T&T. This is a beautiful dessert (very high... fills the whole springform pan to the top); no baking even the crust; great for parties since you make it ahead of time and it can easily serve 10. Works just as well in the off season using frozen berries. Definitely not the very young as there is close to 3/4 cup of alcohol in the recipe. Grace Strawberry Margarita Pie 2 cups hulled and halved strawberries ( I cram and heap them into the cup and use a generous 2cups or more... well really I don't think I even measure any more!) 4 T granulated white sugar Crust: Graham Crackers (1 inner package plus 4 more big rectangles) 6 T granulated sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup condensed milk 7 T tequila 6 T Triple Sec 1 T fresh lime juice a couple of small shaves of lime rind with a microplane 2 cups whipping cream Toss the strawberries with the 4 T sugar and set aside for at least an hour to allow juices to form. Butter or grease a 9" springform pan. Crush the graham crackers in the food processor. Buzz in the 6 T of sugar and blend in the softened butter til combined. Press up the sides and across the bottom of the prepared springform pan. Rinse crumbs out of the food processor and use it to puree the softened strawberries (and their juices) with the condensed milk, tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Transfer puree to a large bowl (really large!) Whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Fold about 1/3 of the cream and the little bit of lime rind into the puree. Then gently fold in the rest of the whipped cream. Pour into the crust. Cover with parchment or wax paper and freeze at least 12 hours. To serve: Unhinge and remove the side of the pan and garnish if desired with strawberries, mint and/or lime slices. Allow to stand at room temp for a little while to soften before cutting. Spoon mixture into a pastry bag with a medium star tip or spoon into a zip-top freezer bag. Chill one hour. (If using a freezer bag ­ after chilling, clip corner of bag.) Quarter strawberries from tip to stem end without cutting through stem end. Pipe cream mixture into strawberries. Chill until ready to serve. These go over really well after dinner whether they are served on a crystal tray or on a disposable plate at a picnic. My favorite way to eat strawberries is on top of good vanilla ice cream, or added to plain yogurt along with some granola or chopped walnuts.
