Here are the finished and painted upper walls of my bathroom that Brickeyee helped me with. Others weighed in and I am grateful for all input.

I will post below, a link to the thread I had about skim coating.

I had another thread about the hole in the ceiling but wont link it here. I will show some process pics of the hole repair. Several helped me with this fix.

The painted walls. This first picture shows a slight texture that is most likely from the roller. I used BM Bunny Gray, in the Aura Bath and Spa:

Oh and I have to thank sombreuil_mongrel he posted helpful info on another related thread about oil based primer. I used oil based BM primer after I finished with the skim coating. I worked great.

You did VERY well.

Congratulations.

I am sure you found it it is not hard work, just careful and detailed.

My old plasterer pal died many years ago.

He could do it all day long.

annekendo - Thank you for the compliment. You'll be pleased with your Dynasty cabinets. My door pulls are Hickory Hardware Cumberland, 4 3/4", in Vibra Pewter. I have a few drawer knobs (Hickory Hardware Manchester, 1 3/8") but went with mostly pulls throughout. Not sure I'd do that again -- it's a little busy with all that vertical metal! The appliance pulls are Top Knob Bead End (18") in Patine Black. They match closely enough. Got everything from Myknobs.com. Very easy to work with and handled a return with no problem at all. Highly recommend.

Thanks for all the comments. We knew we needed to remodel the 1930's/1950's kitchen when we bought the house but it took 15 years to actually do it. The old one was small and dark and had very few cabinets and even less countertop. I had drawn up so many different kitchen plans on paper and in my head but none of them were "right". One problem was that my husband wanted to keep the appliances in their original position to save money by not moving the gas and water and vent for the stove. Plus he didn't want the laundry room in the house and I did. It was 30' across the uncovered patio in a room just large enough for the w/d and to be able to open the door. So you were either hot or cold or rained on or being eaten by mosquitos and often going outside in the dark (boo the darkness). And no, my husband never did any laundry :) I always felt that spending so much money to redo everything but working around bad placement of those items was silly but I did try to draw something within those constraints. When we met with the contractors we didn't even really have a plan that we liked so I asked them what would they do if we gutted the kitchen and moved the appliances anywhere. They sketched out what they thought we should do on a piece of notebook paper and that sketch evolved into this kitchen. All the drawings I made had many more cabinets but that sure had me counting inches to make sure there was enough room for working and walking around everything. We ended up with less cabinets but a generous space around the island. 42" between the stove and sink so two people can be cooking or cooking and washing dishes. 52" between the refrigerator and island and there is usually someone sitting at the end of the island watching TV and there is still plenty of room. There is 48" between the pantry and island which leaves enough room to sit at the island and still get into the pantry. The island is about 60" x 86" and we can cook and do homework at the same time, or spread out and cut fabric, or have 7 or 8 people just hanging out. It's been used a lot! I measured the drawer with the pans and skillets and it's 14" wide with two dividers. It does have a regular drawer above it. If I had actually planned the drawer with that purpose in mind I would have made it a little wider. Maybe an inch or two.

Just joined gardenweb and have been looking at finished kitchen postings. Love, love, love your kitchen. It has to be one of the most unique ones I have seen. The curves, the tile, the wood, all of it is gorgeous. The form and the function of the space are both fantastic. Congratulations on a job well done.

Flori, thanks for the complement. Get a plasterer if you want a beautifully done wall. I want to next time round:)

Thanks Brickeyee, I so appreciate all the help you give use folks. You encourage and explain. I watched some plasterers online and it is an art. It is physical and almost dance like. If I have to do a wall again I will seriously consider hiring a real plasterer. I love the stuff. Mine pales in comparison.

Now, IT WAS HARD! :) I couldn't get a very thick layer on at a time. Then I had to sand it down. Then I had to add more. And repeat and repeat....

I had a whole bag of easysand in my shopvac, I sanded so much.

This is what it looked like after a million coats of easysand. They are micro layers. So I wouldn't say it is a real serious skim coat job.

I think this is after a layer of oil based primer, but I'm not sure.

Holy moly! That's a good job. When I try stuff like that I don't take my time and it ends up looking worse. Congrats.

Thanks schoolhouse! I am very slow. I've never done this before. But I am somewhat artistic and can make things. When I am wielding the tools I imagine what an expert might feel and do. Sort of like sports psychology, watching and imagining your sport perfectly played;)

You did a REALLY great job! I might have to take some lessons-certainly look for your other threads on the step-by-step of this repair. Plaster everywhere here. Very wise to use an oil base primer on the BR walls given moisture. Acrylic paints will adhere SO much better.

I second the thanks to brickeyee and sombreuil_mongrel. Their insight and pragmatic (and specific) suggestions are VERY much appreciated.
