Questions on planning for retirement

My retirement is still 15 years away, but I am interested in your feedback for my own retirement planning.

With all the pre-retirement plans that you made, are there some things that you would have done differently? (Knowing now what you didnÂt know then?)

At what age did you retire?

Would you have worked longer? Or would you have retired even earlier than you did?

What part of retirement living really surprised you, or took a while to adjust to?

Were you prepared for the high cost of medical expenses?

Did you wait until your house was finally paid off, before retiring?

When you retired, did you remain in the same house, or did you downsize to a smaller home? Did you purchase a new home and move elsewhere in the country?

We were very fortunate that I am an insecure person. LOL "I" did everything right and my husband trusted me enough to go along with my plans. When I entered my second marriage and we got on our feet, I encouraged my husband to save and save and save. I saw buying a new house as an investment and in a few years it was worth a lot more than we paid for it. I also saw that the 30 year loan was paid off in 15 years. We charged nothing except a new car every 5 years. When he retired we were debt free except maybe a car payment. Now for your questions. He retired at 65, there is nothing I regret about how I handled the retirement. We use Blue Cross Blue Shield as our supplemental medical insurance and took out an umbrella policy to protect us against law suits. I found we had more money to live on than when he was working full time because was saved most of it. We stayed in our home, I would not downsize unless we needed money to live on. My husband would have retired at 55 if he could have. We are lucky that he was able to stay with the same employer for 37 years. We have a nice retirement from that company, that with our social security we are very comfortable. I have only worked outside the home about 4 years in my lifetime. The only difficulty I had with my husband's retirement was losing my freedom and having him questioning me, where are you going, what did you buy, etc.. That took some getting used to, but we worked it out.

I took early retirement at 59. Mainly to get out of the workplace. I loved my work but couldn't take the office politics anymore. I really didn't plan well and still don't. I had a small income check coming in and after retirement got 2 small checks from two companies which just covered the mtge pmt and my living style. Then at 62 I started the SS checks which have been helpful ever since. I have my home, the mtge payment is a lot smaller than any rent I've paid in the past. I'm doing ok and still have a little money in the bank to fall on if need be. I think I should have worked longer but just couldn't take it anymore.
I'm happy.

celticmoon Thank you so much for the plan outline. I have been thinking along these lines but never really put it on paper and crunched the numbers. I think your plan is as good as you can possibly make it with out a crystal ball. You are right about the unknown. How much will they reduce SS based on income? And how much we will have to pay for Medicare again based on income. We will have to use Medicare and buy a supplement. After all the research I did for my parents I have a pretty good idea how much it would cost today buy who knows what will happen in between now and the 3 or 4 when DH retires or in the future. I agree LTC insurance is to iffy at this point and would rather save that money than take a chance on it. If we live to be 100 one of the issues may be every day living expenses. We all have watched the price of food and most utilities double in the last 10 years. It still blows my mind to pay $4.00 for a loaf of bread or $5 something a pound for a tomato. We could also see our property tax skyrocket here in California. Some politicians would love to get rid of our Prop 13 that keeps property taxes from going up and up. After Joyful referred to my DH as being stupid for not paying attention to household finance in another post, he didn't know the whole story, I got to thinking about it so last month I told DH the bills were ready to be paid, money needing transferred, ect and ask him to do it. I had in the past told him I did most of it on the computer and showed him how to find passwords but really didn't think he paid attention. Guess what it took him all of about 20 minutes to do everything. He then said if I wanted him to do this every month I had better give him a key to our post office box. LOL Never even thought about it but in the 20+ years we have lived in the mountains he has never ever stepped foot in the post office. He now knows where the extra key is. So thanks Joyful for making me think. So all of you out there keep the questions and ideas coming. I can use all the help I can get in trying to think this through. At this point about the only thing I can think of that hasn't been brought up, not really a retirement issue but related, is pre paid funeral arrangements. Not terribly expensive but a great gift to the ones left who have to settle your affairs.

Well Maire_cate, I just ordered a portable router that allows me to have a wireless connection from wired, any wifi hotspot, and using my 3G cellular air card, all with the security built into a router must be safe when using public wifi. So I am hoping I will at least be able to get a signal one of those ways. I will definitely bring my Vizio tablet and one of the laptops (either my netbook or his laptop) and he will most definitely have his reader. All my books are on my Vizio. I am more concerned about having an internet connection than I am about the tv connections LOL. And of course my smart phone goes everywhere. Yes I think we need to do the phone number instead of the online deal with Good Sam, I tried to tell him that last night but he just had to try it. (see me rolling my eyes?) He had me order some fancy pants break controller thing to put on his truck, he was going to buy the cheap one at walmart till he discovered all the youtube videos about all things RV. I kid you not he was up till 2am watching RV instructions on youtube. But he apparently learned a lot. He was giving me lessons on it at the crack of dawn this morning when he got up to get ready for work, I was a lot more interested in sleeping.LOL I am really glad however that I had found some of those youtubes for him, seeing is always a big help when learning something new. And some of those guys on those videos were hilarious.

I see my post caused a bit of a stir. First, we live in Canada so the benefits of an LLC are not applicable here. In Canada, we can set up a business as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or incorporation. With both sole and partner, the individual(s) personal income and assets are liable if the business goes south. In incorporating, personal is separate from business. Ultimately, incorporating is most beneficial. However, we decided to go for a partnership and for a couple of reasons. One, we don't foresee making oodles of money in our first year. Secondly, we will invest our own money into the business. And because our income and business are interlinked in a partnership, any moneys we use (income and profits) will help lower our tax (that's the general idea). Our plan is to throw all profits right back into the business. Doing this will show we are actually "losing" money and so the amount of taxes we will pay will be lower. Once enough money is made so that we can let go of our 9-to-5 jobs and focus solely on our business, we will then switch from partnership to incorporation. First thing we did when dreaming up this concept was to secure an accountant and have been following his advice.

Minnie, I often see elderly working and have thought about what I would do if I needed money. There is a 78 year old woman working at one of the buffet restaurants where we eat. She said she works to get out of the home, for the exercise and to have an outside interest. All she does is bus tables 3 days a week. I wouldn't mind that at all. One fast food place had a senior lady in just to wipe down the tables and chairs during the rush hours. I have only worked out of necessity for 3 years in my lifetime. The other jobs were because of boredom and I think I would suffer greatly from that if I were alone.

Our story is similar to Jonsey's...we married about 15 years ago and knew that we were going to be in trouble if we didn't get hot on the retirement planning...We made a plan and stuck to it...The wisest thing we did was talk to an investment counselor and let them guide us...We have change companyies a few times but are happy at the moment...We invested in a house also that we knew would appreciate and make us some bucks...We sold the house not long ago and the profits or part of the profits are paying for our retirement home...The best thing we did in planning was to change jobs several times...each time it mean't a move to another area, headaches, leaving family, making new friends etc etc but it also meant a big salary increase...and we banked that increase..not once did we increase our standard of living to match that increase...Over the years it amounted to some big dollars and every month they just rolled into the bank....We have just retired but with a great deal of confidence and all done in less than 20 years....
