"forced" early retirement

Hi, all, new here & glad to see this forum!
My husband, 63.5 yrs, has worked for Georgia Pacific for 44 years. He was a union man for 37 years, then was brought to corporate in Atlanta in 2007 to work as a Master Data Analyst after years of training & experience on computers in a GP mill storeroom. So 7.5 yrs as salaried.
A few months ago his entire team of MDM analysts were being told to get lost, not needed anymore. They had until Nov. 2 and were all given severance packages, his being the most generous because of his years of service. He still hasn't signed it, has to turn it in in a few weeks.
However, I'm just not resting so easy with this whole thing. I don't feel comfortable with it, and just don't trust them to have made sure they included everything he is due. It's not that I think they're deliberately trying to rip him off or anything, but I just wonder how to make sure it's all legit.
Since he was a union guy for so long, it seems there would be other benefits he should be owed from that time. But I honestly don't know where to begin looking to figure it all out.
Has anyone here ever been in such a situation where they worked for the same company, but as both hourly and salaried? Or even for different companies?
By the way, they had hired 1 contractor to take over for the 6 people let go on the team. 3 days after the team was gone they were up to 3 more contractors, and we keep hearing that things are going quite haywire for them. Of course. What idiots. We knew that would happen though. I guess everybody here has dealt with that kind of thing at one time or another, huh?
TIA, and I hope everyone's staying warm out there!
