What am I missing about how new faucets work?

I was just reading the thread about where to position the faucet handle...Love the idea of positioning it in the front - I had never thought of that as actually being an option. But the part that I don't understand is how these faucets work. People mention turn left for hot and right for cold- but I don't get how the temperature is mixed.

I've always had 2 faucet handles and had to mix the water temp independently.

Does the handle somehow pull out to control the volume and you just adjust left or right for hotter or colder? Or is there a different way these work?

And if I install a tapmaster, how does that interface with the faucet. Can I control the temperature and volume with the tapmaster or is it just set to a default temperature and volume?

Cabinets were installed this week, painting next week and floors refinished the next week. Need to finalize counter selection this weekend. I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I really appreciate how everyone is so kind to share their knowledge, experience and pictures.
