Sometimes putting a FP in a corner doesn't work if you want a sofa placed directly in front of the FP. If you're not looking to do that and a corner works for you, then I think a corner placement is very pretty.

A TV and a FP are 2 focal points in a room. It would be best, I think, if the furniture could be arranged to see both of them without swiveling around.

I agonized over this same issue. I ended up centering it on the wall, simply because placing it in the corner ate up so much space. I am happy with my decision. If you plan to leave your sofa and loveseat as in the photos I don't think viewing the tv will be a problem.

I think you should put it in the center and do you really want a 42" TV set given that your ceilings are not high?

I think fireplaces should be a feature in a room and you should try and put it centered on the wall instead of hidden in the corner. If you do have to put it in the corner I suggest you move the loveseat to the other side of the coffee table so all seats get a view of it and it's not behind any furniture.

That said, you need to discuss it with your installer because you have to figure out the gas and vent runs. It would probably be easier/cheaper to install it against an exterior wall.

As for putting a tv over the fireplace. Make sure the area where the tv gets mounted doesn't exceed 90 degF when the fireplace is running.

If you move the bookcases to another room and get a new stand for your new TV, couldn't you put the TV and fireplace next to each other? My mom had this and it was nice.

The fp is your focal point of focus of interest in the room. I'd center it on a main wall. Would it work where the long sofa is? Seen upon entering would be ideal, but we can't really see much of the space or your home from the pics.

I had a corner fireplace before. I like to re-arrange the furniture once in a while and I found it very limiting. So I would agree with the above posters who say to put it on the wall opposite the sofa.

I have owned two houses with fireplaces in the corner; one of them is the house I own now. Cornering a fireplace uses up more floor space than having it on a straight wall.

People used to try to center a fireplace not just in the middle of the wall, but as often as possible in the middle of the house, so the radiant heat would warm more rooms.

When you say gas fireplace, you mean one of those self contained units that "burn" ceramic logs, or a regular wood burning fireplace that has gas piped to it to help get the fire started? If it burns real wood, I'd worry about setting the drapes on fire with a stray spark.

OTOH, if it's strictly gas, and you already know you'll be watching tv more than the fire, put it in the corner.

The loveseat in front of the window (I only put it there during the winter so that we can see the xmas tree better), this love seat is actually leaving the room and will be replaced with a single chair and ottoman.

These pictures are ridiculous I know but it is just to give a better idea of the structures we are putting in place. My husband is a bit of a handy man/ jack of all trades so he can basically make whatever configuration I want.

Newdawn: Since my husband is doing the work it made no difference to us to solidify placement before or after the purchase.

Yes I think I am leaning towards centering - my DH wants the fireplace cornered but it is up to me.

Is the tv very functional in the corner like that? Wouldn't seem to be very comfortable viewing. Except for one person laying on the couch, of course ; )

I would center the fireplace and try to incorporate the tv into the bookshelves on either side of the fireplace.

I'm going against the majority here - given that you won't be looking at the fireplace year round (only a major focus in the colder mnths), I'd focus on putting the tv where it makes the most sense (where the most # of people can see it comfortably) since it will get the most use.

If hubby is handy, any thought on putting the fireplace up high-ishy on the wall? Kinda modern? Would allow for another chair to be placed in the room perhaps (I'm keen on lots of seating)

Did you say anything about venting the fireplace? Will that make a difference in the placement?

I'd love to shove a fireplace into my tiny livingroom, but think that it would need to be on wheels (to be removed in the summer) - hahahaha!

Someone here who recently did a lot of remodeling has a corner fireplace. I can't remember her name. Her home looks like it's in the New England area. She posted about window treatments. Her window next to the fireplace had shutters on it. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

It did cross my mind if my curtains on my patio door should be an issue of concern being near the fireplace. Does anyone who has a gas unit know if these may be too close? Perhaps that alone could be the deciding factor.

Option 2 is an easier option as far as the fireplace installation as it is closer to the external wall.

Chloe - yes I did think maybe raising the fireplace would be a nice option - better viewing and also help to keep it away from my littlest girl (who is 2).

No clue re draperies and proximity to a fireplace, but I have noticed that my gas fireplace in the basement, as well as the fireplace at my last house, had tile in the front (on the floor). At first I thought that it was decorative, but after running the fireplace, realized that those tiles get quite hot (would warp hardwood maybe?). Toys and such left in front of a fireplace would get quite warm too.

In this room, I vote corner.

It doesn't look like you much of any clearance for curtains. Call your local building inspector for code regulations and clearances for combustible materials.

Read the specifications in the manual for installing your FP. It will give all the required clearances to combustibles. If this is a real heating, gas or propane FP it will get hot. The safety issues and proper installation is priority. We have installed two in our home, in two different rooms. One is in the corner, and the other is in the middle of a wall as that is where the original ugly brick FP was. In your drawings, I like the FP in the corner.
But diagonals take up more floor space, and as stated before you will have the exact installation specifications in the manual. Follow them. This may dictate where you have room to install it.

Fireplaces were put in the centre of the room for heat and symmetrical aesthetics.

I don't like when TV sets compete with fireplaces as focal points, and I'm with you on not having the TV screen directly above the fireplace! In your space I think your option #2 is the better one, because I'm not sure how functional it would be to have your TV set in that corner.
