Should I work part time ?-- meaningful activiites?

I am nearing 66 and am working full time (technical professional). I have the option to work part time (50%)as long as I am mentally and physically capable.

How long should I "plan" to work "part time". The money will be nice but not necessary.

Will I be sacrificing truely "meaningful activiites" by complicating retirement with work? Travel has been extensive with current job so travel is not a priority.

If you don't need the money, I think it depends on if you want to work or not. I am enjoying being idle, no responsibility to anyone but myself. It is a first time for me.

I have been pondering your question, wondering how best to answer. I think, as jonesy said, whether you work or not, is up to you. I think the definition of a meaningful life is very subjective.
DH and I are retired schoolteachers. I absolutely loved my job and colleagues and felt "life was good and meaningful."

Yet, a year ago, we both retired and moved to another state to a town we love which just happens to be where our two
children and grandchildren live. At that time our youngest granddaughter was 6 months old and we babysat her when our daughter went back to work. Life is good and meaningful...but in a different way than before.
We are thankful we can be involved in our children and grandchildren's lives. (Previously, we only saw them four times a year and missed all their birthdays and other special celebrations.)
Both DH and I do not have paying jobs, but we may substitute teach later...if time permits!

I've just discovered this thread and not a moment too soon (or late?). I can sooooo sympathsize. I'm also a stay at home mom former teacher debating the return to work. I have gotten totally jazzed reading all the great ideas and options. like you, I know htat my whole family would be miserable if I returned to work full-time. Right now I have a great set up subbing at my oldest dd's school. I have MIL babysit and when she can't I swap child care with a neighbor who works evenings. If you ever do feel the need to sub, find a nice girl's school with strict rules. My daughter's school is a dream to sub at. Small class sizes, the teachers always leave extensive plans and the girls actually respect the teachers (even subs). But as you said the pay sucks. It really only works out to be spending cash for me. So the ideas in the thread about future employment when my youngest starts school are real boosters. Good luck with that pet sitting. I am envious of your opportunity and the excitement that goes with something new and exciting - not to mention lucrative!

Thank you for the information. I think you are right about the home warranty company. We have not had good experiences so far, and the companies that have come out always find something to charge for that isn't covered under the warranty. For example, one company came out to see why the air conditioner wasn't working, added Freon (not covered by warranty), and the system didn't improve at all. We are located in Northern Virginia, and so far it is the heat that has bothered us most. The duct work is between the slab and the floor, so it is pretty inaccessible. It looks dirty when we open up the registers, and it is quite possible there might be minor blockages along the way because of root damage etc. I am open to installing new ducts in the attic, but I thought that given that the attic is quite hot in the summer, this might create some other inefficiences. However, if there is a problem with the existing floor duct work, there is almost no way to fix it without tearing up the floors. I was hoping to salvage the Trane furnace, but would it work ok if it were paired with the new Carrier air conditioner(#24ACC624) and the coil (#CNPVP2417) (the company that gave us this estimate doesn't deal in Trane), or would it be better to pay a couple of thousand more and just get the new 80% gas furnace too (16 SEER rating we are told with the new furnace, 14 seer, with just the air conditioning and coil).

I looked back over your pics this morning with pleasure, and I just thought of something. Can the light over the island be lowered? More light on the front of the cabinets would really make the room feel lighter. Can't tell from the pics if dropping the light puts it in the way or not. The chandelier style is the problem--there is so much metal below the bulbs that getting the bulbs where you would like them just may not work. Not a big project if it will help.

Our oven was an issue. My kids are 8, 7 & 5. It's not unusual for them to run down the adjacent hall into the kitchen. Coming from the hall, you can't see into the kitchen at all, it's a blind corner. If you saw the other post where I mentioned placing an overhang into the family room (the pic with the orange stool), what you see from that hall is the load bearing wall. I use the oven fairly frequently, so when I was using it, I'd have to yell out a warning that the door was open. Our wall opening is only 29" wide so the oven door would completely block that opening when it was open. Even the kids couldn't squeeze by. If you don't have young children, then this is probably not a big issue for you or in your layout you might have more space. In the very first picture above, that house in Northern CA had the oven to the right of the fridge. It was a totally open space, so anyone could see the door was open even though it was sort of in the traffic path. As for that pesky window, I was hoping for a bit more wall space. The view isn't great, but that was just an argument for losing it all together. DH says, it has to stay in some form or another, so I'm thinking onee that's not so wide. Yes, it's definitely darker. That picture was taken with no artificial light or flash. We've already cut power to the kitchen. There's about 66" from the corner to the window. If I do a blind corner cabinet opening on the fridge wall, that will take up 24" of the 66 leaving 42". My range is 37.5" wide and needs a ~38.5" opening. Basically, the range would end up sandwiched between the corner and the window. I'm thinking if I could gain that 20" of wall space, I could liberate the range from that tight corner, even if it's only a foot or so. DH and I were hashing this out earlier. He works from home ; ). We both think this might make venting overhead a little easier too. With a smaller window, we could vent directly outside. Defnitely a bonus. I'm just curious, if this was your space what would you do?

Same age...my work has gradually decreased being self-employed working w/seniors. Point is, this has prepared me for the decision of retirement. I didn't plan on retiring this soon, but as some clients have gone into assisted-living it does make one think about what is important in life.

I still need to work some for the income & to be fulfilled. As time has gone by I, also, have been spending more time this summer helping a single son with his home & picking up my grandsons to also assist him. THIS togetherness has been most meaningful...how does it get better than that?

If I had been working full time I would have missed out on this opportunity. Simple life, yes, but I love it!

How about volunterr work? After I quit my job, i applied to two cat rescue organizations. Both "approved " me to work with theor cats. It is great being around animals, petting them, and seeing the joy when one finds a "furrever" home.

I took partial Social Security benefit at age 62, but kept on working according to the benefit rules on limits of yearly income.

In recent years, my company initiated at-home computer-oriented jobs (professional medical transcriptionist) and this lasted several years, which allowed me to work at my own time without traveling to and from the office. I enjoyed it very much as it was less restricting than an office type job.

Unfortunately, as time went on my hearing declined and this year (I'm 85), I had to say OK - time to quit. Can no longer be accurate enough for this demanding type work.

I wasn't too sure how I'd manage retirement, but I've kept mentally active through the computer programs (especially these "how-to" forums) and have been able to garden, preserve foods, bake breads, make vinegars, etc., all of which have helped keep me mentally alert and interested in life.

I say "go for it."
