Can I really retire

I am 43 and I hate the pressure of my job. I calculate that if I average spending $30,000 per year over the next 15 years, I will then be depleted of my liquid assets and current retirement (don't care about the 10% penalty) money. Also I already have a home paid off which I can sell in 15 or so years and move to a cheaper area. Also note I am single and my lifetime partner and I do not have kids and won't have that major expense.

Realistically do I ever have to work again or at least am I at the point where I can simply go independent in my field or really try to find something I love where money is not an issue.

In addition what are good ways to spend the time. Of course I would do even more volunteer work to further give back to society as well as more exercise but what other ideas do you have on this.

I would really think long and hard about retiring now and spending down your savings and retirement accounts. First of all, what about health insurance? I know that is a huge expense. Can you afford it for 23 years? Medicare doesn't kick in until age 65. That is a long time to pay for health insurance.

Second, your Social Security will be less --probably a lot less. Try to find some site that will help you figure out what you will receive down the road. That is almost 20 years out. Your social security payment is based on earnings, of which they calculate it based on your earnings closest to retirement. An early retirement can greatly reduce what you receive.

Can you try some other full time employment with benefits, even if you make less money? No one knows what the future can hold. Do you want to be one of those elderly who go on tv complaining that they don't have enough to live on?

There was recently an article in our local paper about people who were being evicted from a mobile home park. The property was being sold, and developed for condos. People who lived there were complaining that they couldn't find anywhere else that cheap to live. One man was really upset. He retired when he was 47, and now at 63, said that he didn't have the money to move. He wasn't retired with a disability, just didn't want to work any more. Of course, he spent 15 years not working, but now wanted help from the government for moving. If he had worked a few more years, he might not be in that situation. I felt no sympathy.

He, simsedward, about chile club. It's not really a club, just a time and place where kids can challenge one another to eat hot chiles. It began in 2008 when I had a great harvest of Bhut Jolokia, cayenne, hot paper lantern, super chile, tepin and others. I brought in a basket of ripe red ones and in it was a small jar full of the tepins. I set it on my desk and during a studyhall, one kid asked about them. I described all of them and then a Chinese kid in the front row said "I bet I can eat that" referring to the tepin. I said "go ahead" and with those two words, the Chile Club was born. By the end of the day, at least 20 students came doen to try some hot stuff and we went all the way to the Bhut Jolokia (only small slivers, of course). Some people worry about lawsuits and such, but I'm not one of them. Basically, I try my best to discourage them, making it clear that they are "hotter than anything you could ever even imagine", but that just makes them want them all the more. Most importantly, I set a few rules: 1) no chile leaves the room, 2) wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. We usually unly meet during the first quarter wen the harvest is coming in. I have also found that the "members" are adventurous and willing to try other foods such as durian. It's a fun thing to do, and the kids get pretty excited about it too.

Well, it has been quite a while since you originally posted about going thru a depressed period. Hope things are going better now. I recently retired and while I didn't go thru a depressed period, I did go thru a period where I could feel a "vacuum". I think this must be normal because if you've worked a long time (or even not so long time) on a regular basis, things are bound to feel strange when a major part of your routine is changed. But what has helped me is that I do have plenty of other things to focus on. Introvert that I am, I also realize that it is vital that I get out and make sure that I have contact with people besides my husband on a daily basis if possible even if I think sometimes that I'm fine being by myself all the time. Sometimes it feels like a chore but I always feel better after I have made some extra effort to get in touch with an old friend. Besides people, I think you need to fill the time you used to spend with your old routine of work with new routines, ones that you are pretty serious about following, not giving yourself too much slack. I have joined a gym. I swim everyday Monday thru Friday. I also belong to two book clubs which I really like because they are free and they aren't fattening and the people are very interesting. It doesn't get much better than that. Bottom line: keep connecting with old friends on a regular basis and try to figure out ways to make new friends. Find something that requires you to be somewhere at a certain time such as volunteering or set some goal regarding a hobby to finish a project by some time. I think discipline is important for keeping your mental state in good condition. You know what they say, if you don't use it, you lose it! Let us know how you're doing. --Alice

Hayjud, if it's going to cost us $700 a month for health insurance, then we could never retire. He can keep insurance through his company when he retires, but we don't know how much that is going to cost us. If he would only get out of this manager's job, he could stay with the same company and work 32 hrs. a week, and still be full time. I think though he wants to quit this company completely and I can't blame him. He has worked there for 35 years. He works for Kroger grocery chain as a produce manager. Our son doesn't understand why a "produce manager" job is so demanding, but I try to tell him it's the lack of help that they give him that makes it so difficult. He should have never taken this manager job because of his depression and I have always regreted that he did. I think he even regrets it now. Kroger does all this great advertising about how they help people with the food drive at Xmas, etc., yet they have reduced their employees' insurance and have practically taken away the dental coverage. We only have $1,000 a year in dental coverage and that's it. He is real bitter toward Kroger, yet he kills himself to do a good job for them. I just can't understand the logic behind this and it really gets to me sometimes. I just tell myself that he is from the "old school" of the people that still care about doing a good job. We had a wonderful vacation. I just can't believe the difference in his attitude and his behavior. We had to come back home so he could be back at work on Sunday. He won't miss a Sunday because it's all overtime. He left at 3:30 and got home at 4:30. He does this every Sunday and when he gets home, he sleeps all evening and it's just like he's not even here. I think he said 20 words to me all last night and some of the words were "are my clothes ready for in the morning?" This morning, Monday, he left at 4:30 but he never had to be at a meeting until 6:00 a.m. This meeting is at another store, so he went to his store so he could work an hour before he had to be at the meeting. This really burns me up inside that he does this, esp. when they won't give a dam about him when he retires (for that matter, they don't care now how much he kills himself to do the "perfect" job). If I say anything, he gets defensive. As for the land, if we do buy land it is only going to be one acre and no more. That's one reason why we are selling this house. We had 3.5 acres and we gave one acre to our youngest son. We still have 2.5 acres and all of it is grass and has to be cut. Personally, I am hoping we find a house already built so we don't have to worry about where we're going to live while a house is being built and storing our furniture. We've already done that once when we built this house. I really enjoyed being around my DH when he was so relaxed. He is like a different person. We worked really hard around the house for 3 days, then we took 2 days off. I look forward to more days like this, just being able to see him relax more. We don't like much more having it ready. We are having a garage sale this weekend. My future DIL and son are going to help me and what doesn't sell, goes to Salvation Army. Would it be terrible if I set a date when we will put this house on the market, so we can go ahead and get it sold?

Wow, burned out at 43! That was me about 15 years ago. I took a break doing secretarial work in a fun west coast city. After a while, I went back to my former profession and a relatively low stress firm and I feel better. ;)

I really didn't have any problem with the low paying job. I do feel the need to have some savings, other than my house, for retirement.

I don't know what your high pressure job is, but is there some lower pressure related field you can move into?

I'm 43 as well, and plan to work til 60-62 at least.
Maybe a vacation and/or a new job is all you need?

Will your partner still work? Can you be put on his/her insurance?

What about a different job, a part time job or going back to school to learn something new?

Retirement is nice for a while, and then boredom sets in. Traveling, etc. will reduce your assets very quickly. Work as long as you can, part time if need be, and then when you do finally decide to call it quits, there will be more money in the bank, and trust me on this, pinching pennies for year after year is the pits.

Just a personal note. When we retired, our house was paid for, and we thought we had plenty of money in the bank. We figure that Social Security and the IRA payouts would be plenty to live on. and we could have fun and travel with the interest on the investments. Shortly after we made the final step, interest rates dropped, everything else zoomed upward. Little things like Cablevision went from less that 10 bucks a month to almost 50. Garbage, taxes, utilities, Gasoline, EVERYTHING went up. Now, we are drawing on our investments at a much faster rate. It isn't going to last.

I doubt if your savings will either.
