Painting & I don't know what to do w/DS's growth marks.

I have a place on a wall where I periodically mark my sons growth and just realized today that we are painting next week and I have no idea what to do with those marks and dates. I don't want to paint over them and have no memory like DH suggested. He got a dirty look for that! ;) Any clever ideas?

Turn it into a decoration. Mask it off allowing for more growth, say up to just over six feet tall. Paint the rest of the walls whatever color and then paint a border around the "ruler". Paint pens should work great for this part.

Fantastic idea! Thanks :) Paint pens? I will have to look for some of these - never noticed them before. this will be fun. SIL is a budding artist so maybe she could help when she comes to visit.

We were going to repaint our perimeter cabinets and add new cabinets in other parts of the kitchen. I planned to have the new cabinets contrast the perimeter. I went back and forth between dark cabinets or white cabinets for the perimeter (existing dark oak cabinets). Finally the thing that made me go white perimeter and dark island was one simple thing. I like to use dark rich colors on the walls. When the cabinets were dark oak, I never could use browns or taupes. Plus, my adjacent dining room is chocolate brown, and to have the dark color continue through the kitchen on the cabinets, might be too much, I felt. So, after much staring at my space and imagining how each option would work, I went with the white perimeter and peppercorn island. I love the fact that I can paint my kitchen walls any color and it will work. I just hated the fact that my kitchen cabinets in my "old" kitchen dictated my color choices. I like to change my colors every now and then. So take into account how the other rooms nearby are decorated/painted. Think about what color you might want to paint that room. See what works with your choices. Good luck, and like so many others have said, keep looking at photos and real kitchens...see what speaks to your heart.

Consider it another point of egress. It actually may be required, maybe not. Anyhow, painting it the color of the wall wont be too odd. I did that to a door we don't use often.

I am crying as I read this. I am so sorry for your loss. You had a beautiful cat and friend. I had a similar situation with my soul mate Maddie. She was 15.5 years old and was miserable. She ate, drank, walked etc but she was not herself and I knew I could not let her live the way she was. I too posted here on this forum asking for advice. In doing so, it helped me come to the conclusion that was one I already knew but was having a hard time accepting. We put her down and I was sick with anxiety and sadness. It has gotten better over the months but everytime I see a sad story about a dog or one that even resembles her I get an ache in my heart. Luckily, those moments are becoming less. Stay strong. You had a wonderful friend who loved you and you loved back. You gave your cat a wonderful life. In my mind that is a gift. Huge hugs!

Vastly better, although I think the hood and cabs should be the same height. The window looks 100% better without those two narrow cabs flanking it, too. BTW, I would swap the fridge and the tall pantry cabinet so that your fridge doesn't open into that wall (and so the pantry cabinet isn't between your fridge and your landing space for prep items).

Or maybe you could paint/decorate a couple of regular yardsticks and put them up (end to end) over your newly painted wall. That way you could transfer the old markings to these and then continue to use it as he grows. Plus, if you ever move, you could just take them down and take them w/ you for the next house :-)

I had this problem when we moved. I ended up buying a piece of molding trim and put it in the new house - floor to ceiling. I transfered all of the old markings and now continue to make new ones on the trim. If we ever move, I'll be able to take the trim down (it is just screwed into the drywall) and keep my precious memories! HTH

My mom (75) still has our marks on the wall (! very soon I will start growing the opposite direction...).

She solved the repainting problem by taking some wooden crown trim and nailing a mitered frame around that section, like a built-in painting. Since the original wall was a lovely early 60's turquoise, it makes a statement. :-)

Circuspeanut, that image of the turquoise is just lovely.

We painted the laundry room before we sold our last house and I put DD in front of the growth marks and took her picture.
