plaster over painted drywall?

I'm at the very preliminary step of considering this: instead of painting my living room walls, applying a tinted plaster. The walls are painted drywall and are in good shape. I got a bid of around $1500 to repaint, including some very minor repair and two coats of paint(excluding cost of paint). I thought that with tinted plaster, I could avoid painting. I love the look of plaster. On another post, I saw a reference to a veneer coast of plaster. Maybe this is what I would need. I don't know. Before thoroughly researching this, I thought it would be helpful to get some preliminary comments. Does this idea make sense? and how would the cost of the plastering compare to that of painting? I don't want to pay too much more. BTY, I live in NE Florida where it is very humid; I don't know if this is relevant. Thanks.
