Military Health Insurance @ Retirement

We will be retiring in the next few months (@ 60) We currently have health insurance through our job, but we are eligible for TRICARE. Does anyone have any experience with TRICARE and know about supplements? Thanks.

My DH retired after over 20 years of active duty. We have TRICARE.

There are many Tricare supplements available through USAA and insurance companies and through many veterans organizations.

Am in my late 50's. We don't have longterm disability insurance. It's a real gamble. My dad died young, was cared for at home by my mom--no real expense there. My mother just died this past November at age 85--she was at Thanksgiving dinner with us one night, and gone the next. Long term disability? Nope--she was still living independently in her own apartment. Now, note that in her 40's she had a number of health issues--anyone guessing would probably have figured that she'd either have died early, or have been disabled for a long time, and needed a lot of care in later years. Fact is, other than her regular check ups, visits to the podiatrist to care for her feet, and having her cataracts operated on, Mom hadn't had any serious medical treatment for over 20 years when she died. My father-in-law went very quickly, too--at age 82. He was still working as a plumber in November, spent a couple of months in the hospital, then died the beg. of February. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't get the insurance--only you can decide if it's right for you. But to my way of thinking, I don't see all that many people in my life who actually need longterm care. Most seem to either go quickly, or be able to manage their needs anyway. And the insurance companies are banking on the fact that their scare tactics will get lots of people to sign up--many who will never make a claim. For example, I've got an aunt who has had earthquake insurance for many years--no matter to her that we live in an area of the country that has never had a major earthquake in anyone living's memory. But they were more than happy to sell her a policy. I think she also has flood insurance--but she lives on the 6th floor of an apartment building. We also don't get floods of any size around here. That would have to be some departure from the norm for her to collect! And what about the safety of investing in an insurance company? What if the company goes out of business in years to come? Or waht if the funds are mismanaged or depleted by embezzlement. There is a huge scandal in the country right now regarding pre-paid funerals. People paid ahead to make sure their wishes would be taken care of, and many of the funeral homes have stolen those funds and families are having to come up with money to pay the cost of a funeral twice--the second time at a much higher price. Personally (and I'm not telling you what to do)--I prefer to save and control my own money. I'm not a fan of allowing others to take my funds--as in prepaid funerals, extra insurance, IRA's, etc. I do have one small SEP account, but only because I had a year where I needed some serious deductions, and that one was a reasonable way of keeping a few more of my own dollars. It's important to me to have the freedom to invest as I choose, and to move my money from here to there, depending upon what the economy is doing. I've just known too many people who have relied on others to nurture their savings, and lost everything. My sister is a case in point--worked for over 30 years for one company, was up in corporate management when the company was sold and dessimated by a larger one. She had a GOOD pension plan--but the funds were stolen by the new management, and when the company folded, she got a measely, one-time payout of $16,000!

Would your son's condition qualify him for MediCaid? Health insurance is very tricky, especially when dealing with special needs. My husband is unlikely to ever stop working for our state government because of the health insurance. We have a son with autism and the insurance covered some of his therapies before he started school and we have a daughter with type 1 diabets which is more expensive than I could have ever dreamed. I see my General Practitioner when I feel like it - sometimes make an appointment, sometimes not. Need see him only for medicals - thank God. I hear that if I get more than one a year, I may have to pay for at least part of the additional visit. As it is - no charge. My family has history of prostate trouble, so I might be able to avoid that extra cost. He has sent me for a couple of prostate tests - first cost $20., second (for more extensive checking) cost $40. I had an MRI test for that about three years ago - think it cost me something, though was not major. In the ordinary course of things, I'd probably have had to wait for a period, so I guess he called it emergency. When I see him for illnesses, no charge - to me. If I need to visit a specialist, I understand that quite often it entails a substantial waiting period. No charge if I make such visits for necessary service (e.g. if I want cosmetic plastic surgery, to pull my face up an inch or two, I must pay for that myself). No charge when I visit hospitals. If I want semi-private or private room, there's a surcharge that I must pay, but ward service for most illnesses is at no cost. Drugs while in hospital are free - but not after I leave. But, being over 65, I get a break on drug costs. I live in Canada. There is a major effort going on at the moment to open our doors to U.S. style private medical system - which many of us are trying to forestall. We hear that major medical costs are the primary reason for personal bankruptcies in the "good old U.S.A.". U.S.ers in nearby states are reputed to come to Canada by the busload to fill their prescriptions - and a major drug company is threatening to cut off supplies to some of the Canadian pharmacies who make them available on a major basis (largely via internet) to U.S.ers. Here we go again! No idea what is going on yet people are making absolute statements of "fact" and not knowing what they're talking about. Unfortunately you asked the wrong people. What you need to do first is find out what you signed. Short of advice to find out what you signed, forget all advice that is given under presumption and guess. I'm glad to hear you're going to check on what you signed. KUDOS! I'm sure you learned your lesson to sign NOTHING without getting a copy. No copy? No signature. Period. Hospitals and clinics are amazed and angered often when I won't even sign until a duplicate is out. Also, don't take their word that they'll get you a copy afterward. I made that mistake once. Cynic Rule #4: No copy? No signature! And saying "...the HIPAA law protects you" is an ignorant statement in this case. HIPAA does not protect you if you sign a waiver, which is often the first thing you have to sign for medical care. For anyone to make absolute statements of what is happening or can happen is naive since we don't know what was involved. I would doubt that it's a scam since it's through the Dr's office and given their liability in the event of a scam, they're not likely to take a chance. However, they might think something is good for you that you don't think is good for you. You're doing the right thing by finding out what you signed. Then you can start asking intelligent questions and stand a chance of getting some at least somewhat educated answers. Good luck!

Casey - If either of you is retired military, when that spouse goes on Medicare at 65 he/she should be eligible for TriCare for Life, which covers just about everything that Medicare covers. When the other spouse reaches 65, then she/he is also covered. The only cost is the Part B of Medicare. Also, as a retiree at any age, you are probably eligible to get meds at a military pharmacy, hospital, or (for a very small co-pay) by mailorder. Check with a TriCare benefits person and online. No dealing with Part D for meds.)

We retired from the AF in '86 and have used Tricare for the past 21 years. We had many physicians to choose from in California, but when we moved to Oregon last year, we were lucky to find two who were taking on new patients because the payments they receive are so low, tied in with Medicare. We found a husband/wife team at a clinic nearby and we're happy with them. Even though we could have chosen health care through our work (teaching) after retiring from the military, it was hard to beat the price of Tricare versus the huge additional costs for medical care through the school district. Of course next year all that will change as we'll be under Medicare with Tricare as the secondary. Also, getting prescriptions by mail through the Tricare pharmacy program is very handy. We order refills over the internet and they're received within a week. Overall we've been happy with Tricare but we haven't had really serious illnesses so don't know what the track record is if someone has more serious problems.

I'm on Whidbey Island in NW Washington state and Tricare has been in the news quite a bit lately. Some of the large physician groups no longer accept it and the local hospital is considering the same. According to the reports Tricare's reimbursement does not cover the providers' costs of services let alone the charges. Where the truth lies I don't know, I'm not retired military. But that's what is happening here with Tricare. Tom

Before I reached Medicare age, and after hubby retired from the Navy, he and I were enrolled in Tricare Standard, NOT prime, meaning we had to pay a deductible and 25% of approved services and procedures. He then worked for a civilian contractor and was enrolled in ASI (Prudential) which is a Tricare supplement and they picked up the deductible and the 25%. I now have reached Medicare age, hubby is younger, and without my having to do anything, as long as I remain current with my ID card which enrolls me automatically in DEERS, Medicare pays first and Tricare for Life picks up the rest. That is for everything except prescriptions for which I pay $9 for name brands and $3 for generics at any participating pharmacy, I am currently with CVS. I can also go the base pharmacy and receive prescriptions for no charge, even though I am on Medicare.

Good luck to you, and don't let anyone talk you into a supplemental prescription policy.

'annainva' do you pay the $110 monthly fee for registering for Part B medicare? I was advised to pay this now as there would be a huge penalty if I waited till DH was Social Security eligible.

I also am younger than DH. I do not have enough credits to collect SS on my own paid work history ( a lesson for all those military spouses who volunteer at DOD schools, hospitals and church). DH will be eligible at in 2 more years.

We have Tricare for life, plus supplemental with MOAA. We use the Tricare network pharmacies. So Tricare is still my first insurer, then MOAA. When DH retires it will be medicare first, then Tricare.We will drop MOAA.

We retired from the military 3 years ago and moved from CA to Louisiana, DH's home of record. It is very difficult to find anyone who will accept Tricare, as they inform me that they pay less than medicare. Fort Polk is located 2 hours away, no doubt bringing $$ and jobs to Louisiana.

I find that the average citizen here, unless they have family serving appear to not care about the military family or their sacrifice.

We are planning on another move this summer, to Houston TX, they have a large VA hospital there for DH's needs.

When Doctors offices repeatedly turn us away, I feel like reminding them that the freedom they are enjoying was and is not free!

The Medicare Part B Cost of Living Adjustment is designed to change every year with the expected change in healthcare and consumer prices.
The doctor services you get while you are in a hospital may be filed under Part B.
