What quilty things did you get for Christmas?

My husband got micro-handles for my longarm. I had been wanting them for a while. I also got some Joanns gift cards.

Quilting mags and GC to JoAnns. And, some muscle milk to strengthen me so I can spend more time at the machine. :-)

The only garden related item I got for Christmas was a book called "The Essential Garden" which appears to be not much more than an advertisement for various garden tools and equipment. So as a consolation, I treated myself to my first begonia (6" with orange blossoms, very elegant looking) and my first marginata dracaena, which is too big for the spot I was trying to fill. There are 4 plants in the pot, so as soon as I can purchase some more decorative pots, I will divide it. I'd like to put something else in the pot with it, that will spill over the side. What pairs well with the marginata dracaena? I have always had one type of plant per pot, but I want to create little indoor container gardens. I just want to be sure I pair up plants that have similar needs. Anyone have any suggestions?

My husband and I do not exchange gifts on Christmas. We exchange loyalty and an appreciation that the long nights of winter will begin to get shorter! Heating costs up here in the frozen north are overwhelming. We decorate the front door with branches we clip from fallen evergreens in our four acre forest so we do not invade or destroy any living tree and the door decoration is quite nice, humble, happy and very creative. We have fun doing that. There is a ten dollar limit on gifts I exchange with my two children who are miles and miles away in both directions. No need for either of us to go into debt or use credit cards for this. They can use the money otherwise spent for themselves. Have no grandchildren so what can I say? My husband's three children do not send gifts at all, and we do not send gifts to them either. I don't even know if they send a card as he gets the mail and does not share that with me. With the shipping costs, next Christmas, I may just send my two children the money instead.

I received two books from younger son. Dear Life by Alice Monroe, which I had asked for and Philomena by Martin Sixsmith as I had recently seen the film. It stars Judi Dench as the Irish woman who as a poor ignorant girl had found herself pregnant. Rejected by her family she had gone into a convent for 'sinners' where after giving birth she was forced to work in the laundry for three years to pay for the upkeep of her child and the sin of being a fallen woman. The child was then sold by the nuns to an American couple . . . and the film 'story' follows the years-later events when reporter Sixsmith helps Philomena look for her son. Well worth watching with an excellent understated performance by Dame Judi and keeping pretty true to the events. The book, which I have only just begun, goes into far more detail about the then practice by the Irish Catholic Church of sending thousands of babies to the US bringing in a much needed source of revenue and ridding the country of the 'shame' of these illegitimate children. No questions were asked of the prospective parents other than they had to be Catholics and no checks were made/kept on the child's further life. In England it was always known that Ireland was 'priest-ridden' but I had no idea that the Church held sway over the various Governments (of all parties) as the moral arbiters of education, hospitals and 'social welfare' and that President de Valera was totally under the thumb of the archbishop of Dublin. Things have certainly changed in the last 50 years with the modern Irish Govt having broken off diplomatic relations with the Vatican. Well worth reading the book and seeing the movie.

My very favorite gift was from a friend who can cook quite well, that went to the trouble of sending it to me via post. In nice containers too. My son and I would try one each night. Maybe even two. Or three. It was nice to enjoy! List? Not really. My work gave me a turkey (already eaten), my boss gave me a check, my workmates gave me some really cool pop them in the microwave booties that can warm my toes, mom gave me a check, nephew gave me cash, and my sister gave me shiny baubles. I did buy myself an incredibly cheap tablet. So cheap, it is a 10 inch screen, but it came with a keyboard case and stylus, all for $100. I'm not kidding. That's how cheap it is. I have figured out, I only use the tablet for games and magazine reading. I rarely even surf the internet with it even. I'm just glad anyone thought of me at all.

My DD and SIL gave me a lovely book on crazy quilting. It has a lot of information on integrating decorations, instructions for various embroidery stitches for embellishing the seams, and patterns for overall embroidery. There is a handbag plan I intend on using pretty soon.

The quilting around Christmas tended to be outgoing, instead of ingoing. My g'son got a heavy wool quilt......because he likes heavy quilts. My DD and SIL got the Jewelbox quilt I made last year, and the Vallejo Children's Home in Quadelupe, Mexico got my last quilt.

My brother got me a set of Amish quilt greeting cards that are blank inside, but have pictures of quilts on the outside. My mom got me a Quilt-In-A-Day's wooden iron for pressing out quilt block seams at my desk, she also got me plastic template sheets to make quilt patterns with, and 3 Elm Creek Quilts novels. My sister got me Elm Creek Quilts Sylvia's Bridal Sampler quilt book and a lot of WOW fabric for the background fabric for the quilt blocks. My son and DH got me some fabric and some fabric pens and a 6.5" x 24" quilt ruler. So I am all set to have some fun quilting in 2014.

Calliope, what's the name of the book?

All I ended up requesting was a holder for my cones I bought six months ago. I can't stand too many UFOs, so I didn't want to request any books that would drive me crazy wanting to start a new quilt. However, maybe Mother's Day and birthday in May will be incentive to get the UFO's done so I can request a book or two. LOL

My four kids got a kick out of their aprons and DD loved the Falling Charms quilt. She couldn't believe I made it in the two weeks before Christmas. Little does she know how easy it is.

I bought my own Christmas gift in late summer - a Janome Memory Craft for quilting. I did get the KitchenAid mixer I'd been wanting for years though! :) I can tell he's needing something expensive for his street rod project! LOL

I had pre-ordered Modern Vintage Quilt Revival written by Faith of Fresh lemons, Lee at freshly pieced and Kate at swim,bike quilt and it was due in January...but it arrived in time to go under the tree...what a treat to review all the updated creations. I was surprised to also get a book of Japanese
Quilt blocks. DH also got me a 60 count thread holder wall hanger thingy...now to get it hung! It was a merry quilty Christmas!
