My 2011 Family Quilt Photos

Here are photos of the quilts I drafted, designed and hand-quilted in 2011. The canning jar lap quilt I hand-appliqued for my mom. It took me 9 months to complete the hand-applique stitching and this was my first hand-applique project to ever do. I added lace under the lids of the jars per my mom's request. I am happy to say my mom really loves the quilt. And special thanks to dan_the_mailman and chrizty for the fabric they sent me for this project. And Dan I appreciate the "shelf" idea you gave me!

I stitched some stencil designs on to each block using white thread on white background so it would not detract from the jars. I pre-washed all my fabric. I took these photos before washing the quilt after completion so you could see the stencil design.

Below is the sailboat baby quilt I made for my sister's baby in batik fabrics. I like how the blue batik fabrics gave motion to the quilt. I drafted, designed, and machine-appliqued the blocks for this quilt and then hand-quilted the whole quilt. I am happy to say my sister loves the quilt.

Sandra, thanks for posting your work here on the Quilting Forum - it is nice to see your pictures and I enjoy your explanations of how and why.
I made a Jar quilt this year also - I love the touch of lace you added to the Jar lids. Great idea from your Mom! I was also gifted veggie fabrics from a generous forum member that helped me complete my quilt. This is a great forum!

I'm a sailor - I love your Batik Sailboat Quilt!

Indeed, Wolfgang, thank you! The color was not nearly this beautiful last Winter. Only the lower branches turned bright rusty orange; and the new growth turned bright cream. Last Winter, the intermediate purplish hues were absent. I'm hoping for an even more impressive show next Winter. We have had a mild Winter so far, with no snow and very little rain. Our temperatures have ranged from overnight lows in the 20F's (-5C to 0C) to daytime highs in the 60F's (17C). I think all of these have contributed to the coloring. Josh

Claire - love your Halloween pumpkins. When we went on vacation, the squirrels made a feast of our pumpkins - we came home to a few little remnants on the front steps! I've had a busy month - so I'm posting all my October garden photos now. My tomatoes in October were fabulous! My best tomato year ever. Hydrangea Paniculata Tardiva has taken on the pinkish hue I vaguely recall getting a division of a chysanthemum about 4 years ago from an old neighbor. I had almost forgotten about it until it bloomed this year. And I seem to remember it being pink! Not the happiest plant, but at least it bloomed this year! Maybe there is hope for future years? Morning Glories have finally covered the brush pile with foliage and blossoms Brown Eyed Susans continue to put on a show Fall foliage. The tree in front is a red maple - this is the tree that was devastated by the winter moth caterpillar. This year it has colored yellow before turning red - it typically goes straight to red. (This photo was taken on the 24th). Behind the red maple is a silver maple with absolutely no color - just holding onto the green leaves. And finally - some snowliage photos from this past weekend.

Thanks Randy! I used to have a pygmy palm, but it died last year. I never have good luck with them indoors. My fig tree is doing good, but I saw a fig tree a few blocks from be that was about 25 feet across, 20 feet tall, and probably had somewhere around 2000 figs on it (not 200, 2000). It was LOADED! I never saw so many figs per stem ever, everywhere a fig could grow on the stem, it was growing. I might knock on the door just to know what they are doing for it because mine had a lousy 5 figs this year (but in its defense, it was planted just this spring). Even though figs are suppose to be somewhat marginal here, I have to admit that I have never see a fig that wasnt full and loaded with fruit! Good luck Chadec! I hope it doesn't do doo much damage by you either! Looks like you should be far enough to escape the hurricane force winds, but some of those gusts can definitely knock a few plants over. Definitely take some pics! Thanks TJ. Im not sure the name of the fern, but I got it from Home Depot and I think its a Polystichum, but I dont know the species. If you can find out, tell me and I'll tell you if I do find the name! I was under a tropical storm warning a few years ago and I remember some minor damage to the banana plants, losing a large outdoor lamp, and having a few potted plants falling down. Ok I understand now LOL I would have to agree...those pics with everyone's hand on dad's shoulder or whatever...ya they're stiff. The photographer we use is pretty fabulous at taking shots that are candid, yet obviously professional. DH and I have to rein ourselves in every time we see her because she's so good...and we like really big shots (8x10's would be the small ones we get LOL). I personally hate school photo's. They're always too stiff, with bad lighting, and a back drop that isn't meant to compliment anyone. (Or worse the pictures of the outdoors back drops). We haven't faced that yet...I don't know if we'd even bother with school shots. This gal does lovely shots of older kids as well. We were just there yesterday, so I'll be broke in a couple of weeks when she posts the pics on the net for us to pick from LOL But since we have a new house (on monday) to move into...I ummm need more for the decor right? heh heh I do like to keep my family photo's grouped together. We are in a five level home with lots of halls, so I'm using them as our family museaum, with photo's going back to the great grandparents and forward to my little munchkin. But even though I do tend to group them...I still like to have one or two scattered in other rooms. And I'm with SR...no issues with them in the bedroom...since they started out there in the first place :oP But NEVER pictures of my mother or DH's mother in the bedroom...that's just wrong :oP heh heh Lynn that's a great family shot. Very casual and undated, something I hadn't thought of before, but a great idea to remember!

Thank you for the woodgrain fabric and your idea for me putting the jars on "shelves" Dan - that was brilliant and added the perfect contrast and balance that the quilt needed. Magothyrivergirl thank you bunches and glad you like them. It was a real pleasure to make these quilts as they went to family members. I like knowing they will be passed on to future generations of my family. Well off to work on my Card Tricks blocks - just finished #71 of 80, so just 9 more to make - yeah! The Card Tricks queensize quilt is for my parents and am hoping to hand-quilt it in 2012 after I hand quilt my Grandma's garden-themed queensize quilt. I am excited about my quilt projects for 2012. :-)

Thank you for your compliments everyone, I am delighted that you all like the quilts I made! It is nice to share them with others who quilt and who can truly appreciate the amount of work that goes into a quilt. I love coming to this forum especially when people share pics cause it is like going to mini-quilt shows which is really fun for me as I don't get out of the house very often.

I did get to go to a quilt show about an hour from my home last spring and loved it - we just happened to go tour an old sawmill while RVing and they were getting ready for their annual festival and had 2 back rooms in the local store on the property filled with quilts - I just wish I would have packed my camera for that trip! It was really cool to see what other local Louisiana quilters are making. My husband even commented that he liked a lighthouse quilt that was on display so that gives me ideas for doing a quilt in the future for him. Hoping when we go RVing in the spring of 2012 that we can attend their quilt show again and this time take my camera.

My mom has been canning fruits and veggies my entire life so the canning jar quilt just fit her so perfectly. Sharon and Kate I am very happy that my mom had the idea to put lace under the lids and I am glad you like the lace on the jars too. I originally wanted to put some sort of fabric for fringe under the lids for decoration, but thought that would be hard to sew through 2 layers of Steam-A-Seam2 / 2 layers of applique so I was really happy when my mom suggested she would like to have lace. And I found the lace I used at Walmart of all places.

Thank you bunches Christy!!! And it is because of you that this canning jar quilt was possible since you sent me all of the beautiful veggie and fruit fabric that I needed for the quilt. You are such a good friend! I really love the GardenWeb and this Quilting Forum as I have made a lot of great friends here who have have helped nurture my love of quilting. Beautiful quilts!! I love all the details in the canning quilt. And batiks are my favorite, so I love the sail boats.
