The Hartford Ins. Co. class action law suit

Have any of you been involved in the class action law suit against Hartford Ins. Co.? My hubby filled out some forms awhile back, and today he got a letter saying the law suit has been settled & he just needs to sign & return a form & he will receive from $150.00 to $250.00 depending on which class he's in.

I searched on the internet, and did find some info on this, so I guess it's real...not a hoax or something.

Anyone here receive anything about this? One website said there were about 700 thousand people involved.

In this day & age I tend to be suspicious of stuff like this, so hope I hear from someone who has more info on this.

A number of years ago I had a loan with Colonial bank. It was supposed to be 8% fixed, for the life of the loan.

Advanta purchased Colonial and promptly raised my interest rate to 26%.

I contacted the Federal Office of the Comptroller to complain. They asked if I had proof. I did. They investigated and a class action suit was filed.

After a period of time (6 months?) I received a check for $120.00.

Since you are dealing with an insurance company (and not a bank), you might try contacting your State insurance regulator/commissioner to see what information they might have.

When my MIL passed, her auto insurer refused to give her estate a refund on the three months of the policy that were left unused. She normally prepaid 6 months ahead. She passed three months into the policy, so we contacted the State Division of Insurance and they helped get the money back.

Hi dreamgarden, thanks for your reply. Looking at some of the paperwork concerning this lawsuit it says the deadline for returning the form was June 28th. I guess if it's the real deal it will take a few months after that date. We'll be moving again in a few weeks, so I don't know if we'll get a check. ( with the mail forwarding etc...)

I have a number for the Hartford claims I can contact them.

Thanks for offering the phone #'s.. I'll call this one and see what's going on. It's really not a huge amount of money, I was mostly wondering if anyone else was involved in it and how it turned out for them.

Well. I am still not yet convinced I should allow the big companies to sell a 15 HP mower to me at the 23 HP mower price. Since I had to replace a blown motor on my mower, I have a special interest in this topic. My mower cuts so nicely now with a 25HP (or less; I will never know) motor, originally there was a 17HP (or less, again, who knows for sure) motor in there. I think I spent over $1000.00, just for the engine. Now, if that motor turns out to be 20HP, I got shafted, but you are right I may never know for sure; as long as I am happy, according to Rusty, why should I care if it is 15HP or 35HP? "By the way, many, many engines are put out with various stickers on them. Nothing wrong with that as long as it does not exceed what SAE rating is. In other words, 46 series engines were originally 20 hp but were also sold as 16.5, 17.5, 18, 18.5, 19 hp" If this is true, ^that up there, then what is the harm if you buy a 16.5 HP engine and you get a 20 HP engine? I don't think the lawyers would chase after this scenario, and I don't think this is what this case is about. I don't like lawyers much either, but if it weren't for the lawyers our kids would be playing with toys painted with lead based paint, or maybe with other dangerous chemicals. Hmm? And this is the the present day! What would you do, if say, you take your wife out to dinner on a special occasion, you both order the prime rib and when it arrives, it looks thin. Not paying much attention you eagerly cut and bite into a nice chunk and after about 5 minutes of chewing you finally admit to yourself that the prime rib is not in fact prime rib but it is likely a cut of flank steak. What do you do? Prime rib was advertised. Prime rib was ordered. Flank steak was received. It is meat, it all comes from the cow, it is all the same. It will fill you up as well as the prime rib would fill you up. So do you complain, or, just shut up and finish dinner, pay the prime rib price, and go about your merry way? No, this isn't a typical scenario where a lawyer is needed, but what if this restaurant did this switch-a-roo every friday and saturday night as an advertised special? Well, then a lawyer might need to get involved depending on the details of the restaurant. I think the point is clear. The point is, we expect to get what we pay for.

I was really hoping to find a class-action lawsuit I could join - not so much for the money but more to assuage the fury that I feel when I think of how unhappy I am with my "premium" piece of junk Kitchenaid stove. In 2018, when we renovated our kitchen, we decided to “go big” on the appliances, and went with Kitchen-Aid. Up until then, we had been using the old same stove and fridge that came with the house 14 years prior. Neither of the old appliances was a premium brand but they had served us well, and neither had even once required a call to the repairman. Other than the fact that no amount of levelling will allow the door to properly close, I have been fairly happy with the refrigerator. My greatest anticipation, however, lay with the prospect of a new stove with a self-clean feature. Oh BOY! No more sticking my head in an oven covered in corrosive goo and fumes. No more crouching painfully on my knees to scour away the greasy grime. Or so I thought. Then I discovered “Aqua-Lift”, the most useless piece of technology ever conceived of, except for perhaps the Rotato. No. I take that back. The Rotato does what it says it will. I will not even pursue the fact that the Kitchen-Aid broiler sets fire to everything I put in there before it has a chance to actually broil properly, or that the stovetop elements are so hot on the lowest setting that I can’t properly simmer most dishes. Whirlpool’s Aqua-Lift “self-cleaning” feature alone is enough to convince me to never again buy Kitchen-Aid or any other Whirlpool brand. Aqua-Lift, for the uninitiated, is a Whirlpool brainfart that depends on steam to break down the baked-on grease that accumulates inside your oven. If you’ve ever tried the youtube hack where you put a bowl of water in your oven and heat it up so that the steam makes it possible to just wipe it sparkling clean “with NO scrubbing!”, you will know that this method is about as effective as waving a magic wand over the mess. The instructions that come with the stove warn most emphatically that you should not use any kind of cleaning spray or foam to clean the stove or door glass as this can impair the cleaning process and/or damage the surface, and nullify the warranty. And there it is, your Catch-22 – because no amount of steam can reverse the chemical change that occurs when grease gets baked on to the sides of your oven. So, after several earnest tries and and equal number of abysmal failures, I got the big chemical guns out again. I’m back on my hands and knees with my head inside the oven, scrubbing and cursing, and hoping that the cleaner will eat through the grease before it eats through my gloves. I fervently pray that this piece of junk stove breaks down soon so that I can pitch it onto the street for delivery to its most appropriate destination – the dump!!!

This is the first time in a while I've had a chance to read through the more recent posts. I have to say my heart goes out to Melissa Stewart, who never did post again, sadly. My first impulse was to suggest putting a lock on the bedroom door! BTW, maifleur01's post of August 28, 2016 wasn't very clear to me. I think what she was saying was that AL facilities might be helpful to early/moderate dementia patients, but not all of them are willing to be moved there. This is very true. My MIL did not want to move. However, we did not give her a choice. She had lived with us for 7 yrs and it was stressing my DH's (her only child) health. The facility we found for her is a world away from the "just sitting in chairs" places. It is a 5-acre secure campus, complete with its own senior center and as mentioned before, a full schedule of activities every day. The regular routines and voluntary activities helped very much in slowing down the progression of her dementia. Her anxiety lessened, and she no longer needed the anti-depressants or BP bills either. She was the ideal candidate for a facility because she was very social but personally awkward at making friends (she felt it was being "pushy" and unladylike to be the instigator). The casual, regular social interactions enabled her to finally make new friends. This non-profit facility is the third-ranked of its type in the state. It has the lowest staff turnover percentage and one of the highest staff-to-resident ratios. The downside is, you need $$$ for this. Without exception we found the better quality full-care facilities did not take Medicaid patients. IF you passed the interview, had a signed evaluation of your mental/physical health from your doctor, and could claim sufficient financial assets for at least 5 yrs of rental expense, you could be accepted as a resident. In such case, as a current resident if you needed care in the future and ran out of funds, the facility can CHOOSE to apply for Medicaid on your behalf so you may continue to be a resident. Most non-profits will do this. Many for-profits, which unfortunately comprise the bulk of the industry and who are rapidly buying up existing non-profits when possible, do NOT do this. No funds = no residency. Always be sure, if you are looking for a facility for an elderly family member, that you make several visits, research their rankings (both federal and state inspections), and ask as many questions about "what if?" as you can. Just FYI, an article last week in the WS Journal on "We're running out of caregivers" said the average cost of a home health aide, full time (8 hr day) is now $49,000/yr. Remember if the aide is hired directly, you are also responsible for Social Security and other taxes, as an employer.

Mike, it's completely different when you have a FAD which is none other than an 'independent HVAC contractor' that has agreed to sell Carrier branded equipment. The FAD merely represents that this 'independent HVAC contractor' sells enough equipment thru the year to afford this 'description' from Carrier (it's about selling and moving equipment). And the home in which the equipment is sold 'by the noted FAD', is ALSO 'maintained' thru said 'FAD' or 'independent HVAC contractor'. If the FAD didn't install and maintain said equipment --- your recourse is bupkiss. What is required to 'maintain' equipment is more or less left up to the FAD or 'independent HVAC contractor'... there is no difference between these two points --- except for the contract to sell Carrier brand equipment, and because the FAD sells all this equipment typically 100K or more per year. (The FAD isn't in business to fix equipment they DID NOT install / nor maintain.) --- guess again. Where things get messy: the home's Carrier equipment is not maintained by installing contractor. Regardless if they are 'FAD' or not... doesn't matter. $$$ is what moves people to do something. Don't kid yourself. If someone buys a home with said Carrier equipment installed --- which proves my point that 'FAD' means nothing --- why is this home owner having trouble finding this kind of support? Again Mike, FAD doesn't mean anything like you think it does.

The only correspondence I have concerning the lawsuit is from The US district court of Oregon. The contact number I have is for the Harford Ins claims dept. Have you tried going to www.hartfordclaims.com?

I received a claim form back in may filled it out and mailed it back. checks are suppose to be mailed out on aug 27th. each check will be 250.00 but out of that 250 the lawyers take their percentage which takes the checks down to 150.00 no checks will be less then 150.00.

I did these form's also.
They said money was already in a account, but I still haven't seen any.

I emailed the class counsel to asked about when the checks were being mailed, she wrote back with my claim number and told me the check was mailed aug 27th in the amount of 174.69. not bad for just signing my name on a claim form.
of course my husband keeps telling me don't spend it til you get it. lol

A few months back I filled out paperwork for a class action suit against sprint. I totally forgot about it and last week I got a $20.00 calling card in the mail. It was the settlement...so, hopefully this lawsuit will come through too.

I already cashed it, I'll be going to atlantic city casino this weekend so easy come easy go. lol
