Denim Rag Quilt
Comments (8)Calliope - Thank you for your suggestion of dividing the quilt into more manageable sections, what a great idea! I'll be grateful to you when I'm working on this quilt :) Since your quilt is warm enough for an Ohio winter I feel comfortable going without anything in the center at all. Love the colors you chose the red flannel with the denim must look awesome! Thank you too for letting me know that you work with 1" seams. I've been wondering about this since some work with 1/2" seams. I bet it makes a prettier fray this way too so I'll definitely take your advice here. I'm not surprised at all that your grandson values his quilt for its beauty and because it was made by your loving hands. The color (and denim) you chose for the quilt definitely makes it more masculine. I believe men appreciate our quilts more than they lead us to believe :) My husband rolls his eyes and yawns (jokingly) hearing about my quilt projects. However, he could hold his own talking with a group of quilters about quilts because I tell him details anyway LOL! When I finish the first one I'm going to make a 2nd rag quilt (raffle quilt) that will benefit the Alzheimer's Association. I've made 2 raffle quilts for them in the past. The last one was a paper pieced queen size pineapple quilt. A rag quilt is more sensible since the pineapple quilt didn't raise the dollar amount it was worth. I'm in the market for a featherweight because my sewing machine bit the dust (it was way too expensive to repair.) So I've begun collecting denim in the mean time. It's been 1 1/2 years since I've worked on a quilt (that's when the machine broke.) Yes, I had withdrawal symptoms and am very eager to get back to my quilt projects. Calliope, thanks again for your helpful suggestions! Lea...See MoreRag quilt opinions needed please
Comments (5)I saw a gorgeous raggedy quilt and I want to try the technique. The lady alternated the ragging on both sides of the quilt and it turned out reversable. She used smaller squares than I normally use and of course it is more clipping, but the effect was beautiful. Rosa...See MoreCouple of 'Rag Quilt' questions
Comments (4)Huge hint - if you plan to use flannel on back and middle with cotton fabric on top, prewash your flannel first because when it shrinks, it will shrink at a different rate than the cotton top and you will end up with a poofy quilt top. I know this first hand. You still should be able to get a ragged edge using the prewashed flannel since the edges will be in the exposed seams. I love using flannel in the middle bc I cut all three layers the same size and don't have to sew the X in the center. I just catch all three layers in the seams. Makes it a bit bulkier at some points but I saved time not having to mess with the X. It can be done with good results, but my biggest suggestion would be to preshrink your flannel first IF you are using cotton fabric on top. If you are using flannel on all three layers, then I wouldn't bother with the prewashing and let it all shrink together. Hope that helps. Comments (11)Just washing my fabrics for I spy swaps partially stopped up my sewer line. When the DH ran the snake through the line, he said it looks like "mop strings". Since I am dealing with larger pieces, I bought some lingerie bags to help with that problem. I'm not sure it would help with the finer fraying of a rag quilt. You might put a drawstring in an old pillowcase which would be much like Wanda's cotton bag. bk...See Morenana24
