A sneak peek - gray and yellow

Hi all,

After a somewhat successful dining room transformation in April, I've decided to tackle the office.

I have a yellow damask chair in this room that I love and decided to go with a gray and yellow color scheme. We added wainscoting to the bottom third and painted above the chair rail BM Chelsea Gray.

Previously the room was SW Restrained Gold which I had gotten tired of after 7 years. I have about 1/2 a gallon on Restrained gold leftover so I think I will cut it with an equal measure of White Dove and paint the ceiling.

This is the colour combo I've chosen for the main living space of our new home. Love it. You're off to an impressive start.

Thanks for the info. I love that soft green color. I have been looking at paints and I am 99% sure I will be using BM Bunny Gray. It is a light gray and looks good with the carrara tile I will be using as a listello around my BR. The other 1% choice is BM Metallic Silver, which is a great color with the carrara too, but may be just a bit too dark for my space. Both of these colors go well with my carrara. One thing I think about is the life of the grays I've been looking at. I don't want a dead color. I think the Bunny Gray is more lively than the Metallic Silver. Gray Owl has a playfulness of green.

jjam, come on over. We'll order in Chinese. (That's a joke because the only time we have eaten a meal in that room in years is when we've had friends over and ordered Chinese takeout.) It is a very quirky and personal room so I am sure not to everyone's taste (but what rooms are?). The room is full of travel souvenirs and my kids' lovely ceramic crafts, it's kind of cramped, but it works for us. And just in time -- because with the weather, I've had to relocate my morning coffee from the screen porch back to my "winter porch" aka dining room!

kimiko232 -- I really like the cement tiles too; they are very cool. It remains to be seen if we are cool enough ourselves to pull them off. ha! Those California tiles are beautiful. I thought of diamonds but might just do running bond if I use 4x4's; there are only so many patterns you can do with square tile! One tile place showed alternating horizontal rows of rectangular and square tile, and that looked really nice, though a more modern look. WindyCityLindy -- thank you! The wood countertop is kind of an experiment. :) I figure that at least the bottom course of tiles had better not be too expensive in case we have to change it out in a few years! (not planning to though!) Ellendi -- yes, I wondered the same thing, if it would look less sterile/boring once all our junk was back on the counters. I really like blue and white (our dishes are blue willow); I think my challenge with delft would be to keep it from looking too country with the wood countertops. Otislilly -- one of the tile showrooms had row after row after row of tumbled stone, so your comment made me smile (the sales guy there said the same thing). I think I want to go a little more retro/vintage in this house. Slate could possibly work, I'll have to look. Thanks for weighing in!

Wow! I am going to confess: when I saw that color combination I thought 'oh yuck that cannot be good'. And then...I opened the topic, saw your sneak peek and thought Wow, that looks great!

Very, very nice. Wouldn't have thought of that pairing but it is just lovely.

Wow. Seriously thought YUCK too till I saw your pics. Makes me want a grey room, never thought that would happen! :) I can't wait to see the finished room.

VERY pretty. I used this color scheme for my mom's "get-away-from-it-all" spare bedroom a couple of years ago. Serene, yet has a happy vibe.

I tried to get DH to go for it in our bedroom, but it was a no go. I'm doing it somewhere, though, mark my words!

Elder Beermans flyer in today's paper shows their microfiber comforters on sale for $19.97. They show a yellow and also a grey one. Guess who is going to go shopping at EB today? If can find a yellow printed sheet, I 'll buy the grey comforter too.

Just gorgeous! Your gray seems to have a touch of blue to it, which I think is what makes it play so nicely with the yellow.

OT, error. When I went to pick up the grey comforter EB put aside for me, it wasn't grey- it was periwinkle. The clerk said she thought it was grey, but then told me the pictures in the flyer only make it look grey. Boo. So I bought a yellow one and found a printed sheet set with some yellow in it.

Would love to find a sheet set like the yellow pattern of your chair. I found a grey comforter online, but NO yellow or gold printed or paisley sheet sets.

I have a similar color scheme in my home office. My gray is very similar to yours, it is SW Steely Gray. I can't wait to see your finished space! here is mine...

Dreamy. Just delicious. Gray and yellow (or gold) is one of my favorite combinations, and you do it gorgeously here. The particular textures of the chair and draperies seem to radiate against the gray. What are the materials of those two? Looks like a rather sumptuous velvet and a silk?

schoolhouse...the chair fabric is a damask. I tried a search for you for yellow damask sheets but no luck, actually there really weren't any yellow sheets to be found on google images!

mom2seth, love your room! Especially your white chairs. My stuff is all dark, so it's not as crisp and refreshing as yours! Our grays are very similar. My trim is antique white.

mjsee, i did a quick click but you do have to be a member to see the pillow.

flyleft, the chair is a chenille. I recovered it in this fabric about 5 years ago. The drapes are silk. They are more of a natural stripe with a little blue/gray line running through.

Here's some more photos...I'll have to wait till next week to do the ceiling. As you can see I have two completely BLANK walls. Art suggestions would be appreciated. I may move the desk to the center of the room rather than keep it on the diagonal.

In process...BM Chelsea Gray and the old SW Restrained Gold. I plan on using a shade similar to this yellow for the ceiling.

Okay, the photo site is really slow right now. I'll add some more later.

LHU-LHU-LHUUUUUVIN' IT!!! (Must be said in a sing song voice)! I painted old wooden chairs Chelsea Gray. Seriously beautiful color!

OMG, these are beautiful rooms! I'm so impressed with you guys. I put up gray wall paper in mom's yellow tiled bathroom once. I think I'm the only one who liked it.

Thanks for the kind words! Tinypic seems to be working again, soooooo here's what I have so far.

Well there you have it. I think painting the ceiling will add a lot.

Suggestions for those two blank walls would be welcome! I was thinking maybe old maps and sailboats? I think I may re-arrange the furniture too.

Yes, I know. I have spent hours Googling for yellow paisley sheet sets or "yellow printed sheets" (don't want solid yellow); find nothing or what I do find is "Sold Out". Thanks for trying to help.
