Decorating experts - travertine fireplace with cottage style ?

We are leaning more toward a cottage style, at least with colors (greens, blues, tourquoise, pale yellow) with white trim. Before installing the carpet (which is a tan color), we took another look at the red brick fireplace, which doesn't fit. One option is to paint the fireplace surround a white or cream but wondered what to do with the brick hearth.

Assuming we want a cottage style an Interior Designer suggested travertine for the hearth & surround, and to keep the tile size on the small side (such as 12 x 12 or 6 x 6) to give more of a cottage look, rather than the larger tiles, 18 x 18 or 24 x 24. She did not select white marble because of its tendency to have a gray vein -- which didn't look great with the tan carpet. The travertine gives a warmer look.

So what do you think? She sure sounded like she has an eye for design. Could we still paint the brick surround white and have the travertine hearth? The carpet, by the way, blends well with the travertine, which if installed on the hearth only would provide continuity. This is a relatively small house. Thanks for your help.
