Bedside lighting strategies

How do you get enough light with bedside lights to read by?

I hate overhead lights and only use them when I have to, and I generally prefer low levels of light. I use the overhead light when I need to, but definitely not when I'm in bed with a book. I have standard lamps on either side, but it's just not . . quite enough to read by.

I don't think I've ever gotten this quite right. Extendable reading lamps get in the way. Ordinary lamps don't seem bright enough or close enough.

Must you have sconces? Multiple lamps? Clip on book lights?
