Sears GDO - repair, replace, which kit?

Thanks to this site, I was able to diagnose my GDO as most likely being a stripped gear. Just took it down, and sure enough that's what it is.

The openers (have two of them) are probably 16-17 years old. Worth repairing? Just wondering if there are other parts that are likely to start failing soon.

If repair is worthwhile - should I get the more expensive kit (41A2827) that includes the entire sprocket assembly, or is the basic gear kit (41A2817) usually enough?

Just replace gear kit 41A2817. The other one is usually only replaced when the bronze bearing fails and the chain jumps off the sprocket. No one can predict the future but 10 years is generally considered a normal lifespan. Now would be a good time to check the condition of the door hardware too.

Yeah, the springs were weak which is probably what killed the gear. I moved the springs to another hole and the door seems to be working well now.

I think the chain is also too loose. Got any pointers on adjusting chain tension?

That shaft should slip right in there. There isn't even a bearing or bushing at that point. If the worm gear is in place you cannot turn the sprocket by hand.

There have been a few changes and I think the biggest one is the t-rail has been changed to a channel. I'm not sure this is true in all models and you will need to do some checking. I would opt for a new opener. The installation of a door opener is pretty simple if you follow the instructions word for word in the owners manual. It also gives you some valuable experience with the adjustments, what they do and how important they are. I hope you consider this option.

no the door does not need to be connected. Did you make sure the RPM sensor (the rotating plastic bladed piece) is fully seated so the fins go through the sensor?

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the rpm sensor is plugged in. If none of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

I have a door opener someone gave to me and I got it all hooked up got the remote programmed everything good to go or so I hoped. The model is a 13953674SRT2 it has 3 terminals on the board with wires out of all three. I can jump the wire from the #1 terminal to the #2 terminal and the door will open and close. Dont know what the other two wires are that both go to the #2 & #3 terminal. I assume that these possibly go to the eyes I have read about in previous posts. I do not have the eyes. The other issue is the remote will only make the door go about 12" then it returns back to the up stop. Again I assume this is because of the eye issue. So my questions is can I bypass the wires to the eyes or do I have to buy them. And also is this the reason for the door only moving 12" with the remote.

sbs9 the proper adjustment for the chain is it should sag to within 1/2 inch above the t-rail when the door is closed.

mbowen your problem is the lack of the sensors in the doorway. There is no way to bypass them.

Went to Sears Hardware today it isnt something they stock. So Ill have to go to the Sears parts store and get a set.
