is important in various aspects of our lives.

For example - have you noticed that, after you've spent several days ill in bed ... when you put feet to floor, you are surprised at how weak you've become?

That's a problem with astronauts who've spent a while weightless, as well, they say.

Same works for one's brain - if we let it go to seed, its capability will diminish (not to say that it was too great to begin with, for some of us). Keep the old brain active, to keep its capability alive.

Surely some of you have some ideas that are worthwhile sharing, in this space?

If we don't use it - we'll lose it.

I think that would be a shame. Don't you?

It seems to me that there are a number of ways in which we seniors can help one another.

For example: how many of you Canadians know that if you're a low-income person, in many areas volunteers trained by the Income Tax department work in clinics where they'll prepare your income tax at no cost?

Perhaps you know someone who could use that service.

Perhaps you could encourage your group, social club, church, etc. to publicize that information, if they haven't. 'Twould be a good diea if they'd organize and staff such a clinic, no?

For those of you in other countries, does your income tax department provide such a service?

If not, why not?

Get on their tail and suggest (persistently) that they set up such a program.

If you can get others and several agencies to support your proposal, so much the better.

Hi,

Yes, there are several avenues for seniors here in the NW. Some are the senior centers, senior communities where folks volunteer & good ole AARP for tax help.

As previously mentioned Turbo Tax was my choice after years of having my accountant do it. Had occasion to meet with her & guess it looked fine. My choice was made on trying to cut back on expenses at this age.

They also have a tax program in our area like that (Ohio). Also one for low income. As I have not yet reached retiremsnt age (but climbing that hill pretty fast) I am interested in a lot of things that require that ole 'brain power' to work. I got my GEd at the age of 38, went to college for accounting age 44, 1 semester to finish. I should have graduated Jan 2004 but health issues arose and had to drop 4 of the major classes. I'm thinking this fall I'll finish, I'll probably need to take updated classes but that was included with tuition and just fine and dandy with me..!! Took tax classes this year. I think doing nothing for the mind is a horrible thing to waste. When I was done with taxes, I thought 'Now what can I do?' I love knowledge, doing research. As I have dicovered these different forums I've found ways to do that what I like. I sew, garden and love being a first time grandmother. I still have a family at home to nurture Husband and kids have been very supportive, I htink they think I'm crazy sometimes but they know 'that's me'.

Joyful is right Use it or lose it, and using is a wonderful thing for the present and the future. :0

I pretty much plan my own beds, but I've been gardening for a bunch of years and am a plant nerd, so have a pretty good mental vocabulary of plants to work from. I plan my beds mentally with only general guidelines (ie green fern of approximate height and width, or gold-leaved evergreen shrub of an approximate size, or a perennial with medium sized variegated foliage) and then go peruse local nurseries for shrubs, vines and perennials along with websites for vines and perennials. I find that easier than trying to find a specific plant that might not be available in my quite rural area. Before I plant I physically lay out all the larger pieces still in the pots on the site and tweek as needed so that it looks good from different angles, and then add the perennials and groundcovers. Unless this is an area where no one ever goes in winter and no one can see from inside, I agree with Duluth that you might want to seriously consider some shrubs, a dwarf tree (on the outer edge of the bed or in a bulge so that it's far enough from the house) or at the very least a birdbath, sculpture or some ornamental trellises or tuteurs with vines growing up them so that there is some winter interest and some taller interest during the summer (since many of the taller perennials are for sun.) I'm attaching a link with a bed I planned for year-round interest, though unfortunately the one illustrated is in full sun, so the plants can't translate. I'll plan to go out and take some photos of a shade mixed border that I have as well. I worked on both these beds (which are 2-5 years old) to get not only flowers (since perennials usually bloom for only part of the season), but also a range of foliage size, texture and color so that even out of bloom there is something going on. Another thing to consider is the amount and type of light you have. The north side of a building will have shade, but if there are no other structures or trees nearby, it will be a much brighter shade (and you will have a wider plant palette) than if you have overhanging trees which create dense shade. Also, your east and west ends may get some sun morning or afternoon during the growing season. A final suggestion if you want to do the work to plan your own beds - go to the public library and get out lots of books on shade gardening, especially ones with photos. What your local library doesn't have, you might be able to borrow by requesting a loan through your local library from other libraries. (NH has a wonderful state-wide interlibrary loan program.) Go to Fine Gardening Magazine's website and search for shade garden articles and check out what (if any) garden magazines your local library or gardening friends get. This will give you a feeling for what plants are available, what you like, and how they can be combined in a design. Another good book for design of a mixed border is The Well-Designed Mixed Garden: Building Beds and Borders with Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals, and Bulbs by Tracy DiSabato-Aust. I am SO looking forward to doing this to my front lawn in Texas! Last week I went to a class on water sustaining, and built a 55 gallon rain barrel from a food grade drum. The class was so interesting, learned stuff I had never thought about before - we really are getting to a place where we need to get away from watering so much. With all the new houses, businesses, parking lots, malls, etc our land is quickly getting covered. Texas only has one natural lake, the rest are man made, mostly during the 30's to provide water for later population growth but it's not enough. Our largest water user in the Dallas/Ft Worth area is the airport, cleaning planes, runways, deicing, etc. I'll quit rambling here - just one other thing, should have known this, but all our potable water is recycled over and over for our use, but runoff from overwatering, etc. ends up in the storm drains which empty into the creeks around here. That means fertilizer and lots of other stuff ends up in the creeks.

I agree TOS, but he simply won't eat veggies and until he met me, he never fed her veggies or fruit either, he fed her what he ate and she was grossly overweight. At five years old, her face was so round, her eyes looked like dots. She really looked like she was in pain when she tried to do any physical activity and I felt bad for her. I think at 5, she weighed 60-65 lbs. (I can't remember now, but I know that last school year, she was wearing a capri pair of pants that barely fit her like long pants when she was 5, and they fit her just right at 9) I couldn't believe how much he fed her, the same size portion he ate. He had no idea about nutrition or how to feed kids, but then neither does her mom. He even told me that she doesn't like vegetables but when I would make them for me, she wanted some too. He was surprised she likes them. I give her stuff she likes, but she wants greasy, salty foods that he eats and it may be a good idea for him to eat after she goes to bed. But, then we usually eat at the same time because it's the only time we all get to sit down together and well, it was one of my (and DH's) favorite childhood memories.. the family sitting down at dinnertime. It seems rare today that families sit down for dinner so we make it a point to do that everyday. In all honesty, her plate looked better than his. I'd rather have a bowl of fruit than fries... it's sweeter, and yeah I love fries, but they make me feel a little sluggish after eating them (well any greasy foods). At lunch time is a better time for that kind of food since you have the rest of the day to burn it off, but right before bed, I think it's better to eat lighter. (especially since it was Sunday and after the long drive from her mom's, it was already 9pm and she was going straight to bed after dinner) Usually, we eat around 6:30 or 7 and she goes to bed at 8:30-9. Maybe because I'm female and females tend to diet or watch what we eat more than guys, it's always something I think about and he doesn't. He'd feed her a heavy meal and send her off to bed without thinking that it's going to be stored calories and convert to fat.

Are these base cabinets and/or wall cabinets? Another option is a super susan (lazy susan w/o the center pole). Either option is probably better than stationary shelves or nothing! BTW...you can do lazy susans in upper cabinets as well. My parents have had one in the upper corner cabinet in their kitchen since 1960...I noticed last week, though, that it's starting to fail (a little tougher to turn & one shelf seems slightly askew)....of course it's 48 years old! [Time for a remodel...the only "remodeling" my parents have done in 48 years is paint the cabinets, replace the floor, replace the cast iron sink w/SS, & replace appliances as needed!] Before deciding, do a search on both. There have been some discussions on the pros & cons for each. E.g., If the cabinet of the LS doesn't follow the curve of the susan, things can fall off. With Blind Corners, things fall off b/c of the swinging around action. I would not put anything breakable on any blind corner or LS that doesn't have a "matching" cabinet. If you do decide to go with one of them, I suggest putting either small appliances or pots & pans in them...they are heavier/bigger (less likely to fall off) and if they do fall off they're less likely to break & easy to grab a hold of.

Here's some advice:

1. Widen your circle of friends. Try to have friends younger and older than you, as well as some your own age. Also, get to know people at different educational levels, and in different occupations. Often, those who have little education develop wonderful life skills for survival.

1a. To meet these people, join clubs, volunteer for worthwhile causes.

2. Limit your "trivia" reading. If you have a romance novel habit or if your favorite reading is gossip magazines, try to limit your exposure to those things. If you spend a lot of time reading other specialty magazines of any sort (sports, homemaking, gardening, crafts, for example), try to balance them with some more serious reading such as news magazines or editorial pages of the newspaper.

3. Play strategy games. Play chess or checkers or Chinese checkers, and seek worthy opponents. Try to choose card games that make you think, and select playing partners who make the game a challenge.

4. Pencil puzzles. If you are selecting crossword puzzles that you can complete without thinking very much, move up a notch. Do other types of word games and brain teasers.

5. Work on your vocabulary. One way to do this is to read something that's harder to understand, and look up the words and see how they are used in context.

6. Do jigsaw puzzles. But select the ones that are more difficult. (That can be a challenge as we lose our great eyesight. Maybe a lighted magnifying glass or a magnifying lamp would help.)

7. Write. Sit down at a computer, a typewriter, or with a pencil or pen and paper. Write your life story in sequence. Or take various topics and write your thoughts on them. Or write about people you've known. Things you've done. Places you've visited. You'll probably find it an entertaining thing to do, it will certainly stimulate your brain and your memory. And your grandchildren may treasure the results.

With regard to jigsaw puzzles - my ex and I had been apart for well over 30 years prior to her death last year.

But I remember doing jigsaw puzzles with her - she'd find about 9 pieces to my one!

Crossword puzzles are interesting mind-exercisers, as well.

For example: do you know a six-letter word for people that buy lottery tickets, frequent casinos/bingos etc.?

If it starts with "s" and ends with "d", it's likely "s-t-u-p-i-d", or if it ends in "r", likely "s-u-c-k-e-r".

A personal financial advisor, I've (almost) never bought a lottery ticket.

But I've won about $12. (maybe $14.) using lottery tickets. They used to offer free lottery tickets for purchase of a given amount or more of gas at some local service stations.

"Same gas, same price - so why not avail one's self of the bonus?" was my thought.
