Repairing Plaster walls - damage from adhesive

We just bought a 1951 house that has plaster walls. One of the walls had paneling on it, and when we removed it, there was some damage to the plaster where the adhesive had been. Most of the damage isn't too deep, but does go down into the rough layer below the surface plaster.

Along the hallway there was a heavy wallpaper (felt like a heavy vinyl/plastic layer) that also left some damage. In many places there is still old dried/hard adhesive left as well - we've tried steam and a heat gun and had only marginal success getting the adhesive off.

We'd like to hire someone to skimcoat these walls to get them back into shape, and are wondering what kind of prep we need to do before they can put the skimcoat on. Should we fill in the damaged areas with spackling or some other patching material? Do we need to remove the adhesive residue, or can the plaster go on over top of that? Anything else we need to know?
