Annoyance of those @#&$%@# Telephone Menues

I have been trying for days and days to get through to the Social Security office and have to listen to those horribly annoying telephone menues each time, only to be told at the end that I must call back later because all of the agents are busy. The same thing with IRS. I want to talk to a real, live, breathing, human being, not a computer who never has what I need on the menue. Does anybody else hate those things? Judith

Some time ago our national broadcaster, which offers a number of useful ideas to help us live more effectively and holds a phone-in program for an hour daily at noon that covers our whole (large) province, had one on how we react to those canned phone response systems.

I said that when I've felt mischievous, I may keep track of how long I sat cooling my heels listening to a long list of various subjects that I may want to deal with at their company - usually none of which I want.

When I get a real, live body, I tell them that their company is saving money by letting a machine answer me rather than a person - but that they're wasting my time, as none of the options offered dealt with the issue that I wanted to discuss.

So - as I've been kept uselessly waiting for, say, a minute and seventeen seconds, I propose to talk nonsense to them for that length of time, then to get down to business.

Some find that an interesting approach to the subject, some tell me in a bit of an annoyed fashion that they are very busy and don't have time to talk nonsense - to which I reply that I, too, am busy, and that they should not forget that their company has kept me waiting, just as uselessly.

I tell them that if they don't want to talk to me, can I talk to their supervisor? None has agreed to that.

No one has hung up on me. If one does, I'll call back immediately and ask to talk to the president.

The moderator of the show laughed and said that he loved that idea - that he was going to use it.

I told him to be my guest.

I can't believe that quite a number of you don't have interesting comments on this issue ...

... or are they so profane that Spike's censor won't let them through?

Anyway - I'm sure that the rest of us would like to hear them.

Don't tell me that you all are learning how to be silent ...

... preparing for the long silence when you they put you in the box?

But - you're still alive. Your brain can think. Your fingers can move, to send your thoughts to us.

We're waiting to hear what you have to say ...

... on this issue - and others, as well.

I am from the U.K. but now live in Crete, Greece. It is a beautiful place to live, with wonderful people. The view from my village. The view from my dentists waiting room. No. I do not trust the banks at all. For example, I have both a euro account and a pound sterling account with my local Greek bank. When I need funds sent over from my U.K. pension, I instruct my U.K. bank to send sterling to my local sterling account. I then transfer some or all of it to use into my euro account, WHEN THE EXCHANGE RATE IS ADVANTAGEOUS. The last time I did this the money did not turn up. My U.K. bank swore that they had sent it. It had certainly left my U.K. account but had not arrived in my local sterling account. Weeks later, it was found in my euro account at a very, very, poor exchange rate. But how had it got there? This was a different account number which I had never given to my U.K. bank. It turned out that my U.K. bank was not allowed to transfer my money directly into my local bank. Apparently, it has to go through a middle bank. Why? I don't know. The intermediary bank was Deutsche bank. Deutsche bank stole some of my money by forcing my local Greek bank to give them my account number for my euro account so that they could change my sterling into euros at a very poor rate and then pocket the difference. The day the money was put into my euro account, my Greek bank was offering 1.20 euros to 1 pound sterling. Deutsche bank changed it at 1.15 euros to 1 pound sterling. That is a big difference when it was thousands. After many weeks of expensive telephoning and trips into town to my local bank, I finally got some of it back from Deutsche bank. Not all of it , but it had made me so ill, I just gave up. So, Deutsche bank stole....my local Greek bank should not have given them my account number information.....so no, I do not trust any bank. Have you called the candidate ... to start talking as though it was a hobo call ... ... then ask them how they like getting such a call? Inform them that you've had XXX number of such calls, today xxx number yesterday ... ... and that you find them a royal PITA!! Also ... do the candidates give detailed breakdowns of the sources of funding of their campaigns? How soon do they become available? Can you get a list of the major contributors prior to the election ... when it really counts? Ligh fires under your canadidates'/representatives' rear ends - let them know that you're interested ... and watching. We've had municipal elections in many parts of Canada recently ... and it turns out that much of the candidates' funding in cities come from developers/builders ... and when the developers have a project in view ... and the local inhabitants object ... the councillors seem to be rather hard of hearing. Have a great election, folks. I hope that the people who have the really best interests of your country's long-term future (and that of the world as a whole) are successful. Have your candidates been honest enough to have warned you to expect some more tough years ahead? ole joyful

Interesting article, but I am not convinced. To me the statement that the length of the backup can be reduced up to 50% seems unsurprising but not especially relevant. For any given number of cars the length they occupy in two lanes will be about 50% of the length the occupy when they are in a single lane. The datum that zipper merging can improve overall traffic flow by maximum of 15% without also stating the average improvement in flow and the minimum improvement seems incomplete and makes me suspect that the average improvement is either 0% or perhaps actually negative. (Although it could be that it is a journalistic summary of the original studies) Furthermore it notes that California DOT examined similar data and reached a different conclusion. Lastly the article also notes that even states that recommend the practice consider zipper merging is to be "not intended to be used when traffic is flowing briskly, with ample distance between vehicles to move over earlier without causing a slowdown. But when traffic is slow moving .... " it can be effective. This sounds to me like the practice is intended for city streets or more urban environments as opposed to the more rural 2-lane freeways I usually frequent.

Judith, I hate them so much also. It is so hard to actually get a human on the phone at times. It's VERY annoying for me, especially when there is something urgent that I need to take care of.
