Countertop Installation Costs: Tile vs Stone Slab

Thanks to all of you for this helpful forum.

We'd like to cut costs and go with a large format (matte black) porcelain floor tile with black epoxy grout for the countertop surface in our remodeled kitchen rather than soapstone, slate, or honed granite (see link to example from Mosaik Design in Oregon).

While the cost savings seemed like it would be pretty dramatic at first, I've heard a couple of comments that the labor involved in tile installation could make the cost of tile vs the cost of stone "comparable". Is that true?

We'd need about 50 square feet of countertop surface and the tile itself is probably going to run about $10 sq ft (very rough estimate as we haven't settled on the brand / color yet). I realize that you get what you pay for with respect to tile contractors and we're willing to pay an expert tile guy very well to do a good job. We love tile because it's indestructible and friendly and not as formal as stone but if the installation is going to be super costly we'll consider soapstone more seriously.
