Help me decide (4 pics)

I'm going to make a quilt from batiks for my son's GF's 21st birthday. I already know she loves batiks, and she loves the quilt I made for my guest bedroom, but I made another one which she hasn't seen.

Either would be easy (which I want) and I like both, so I'm having trouble deciding, LOL. I have a 50-piece bundle of FQs, and a beautiful blue/green batik with a leafy pattern for the back.

So which is to your liking?

Hard decision! But, you know that :)

I think #2 Step Daughter Guilt looks more unique and has a younger vibe. I would suggest a different color backing if she will see the SDG so she sees it is truly "hers". I really like the quilting on The Guest Room Quilt.

And not in contention - but I love your Ex wife quilt - not what you called it, but I think you know which one I am referring to.

There are a number of ways to make keeping your pond maintenance more efficient without the outrageous price your handyman puts on the job. The first problem of fine leaved Honey Locust leaves could be solved by making a screen sided or mesh sided basket to put into the top section of the pond to collect the leaves. Just leave it in place between cleanings. If you are handy, the screen sided bucket is simple enough but premade mesh fish nets come in some rather large sizes and shaping the handle to serve as a cup type handle is easy enough as is making some sort of shelf to hold the net in place. Just lift the net out by the handle, let the water drain back if it is sufficiently clear and dump the leaves out. I am putting in a link for a website that happens to show several products on the same page that would do a good job of cleaning the mulm under the bottom drain. The fish capture nets are there, too. The Muck Vac is about as simple as it gets. The price is a bit steep but it works. All you need is 50 lbs water pressure in the hose. The leaf vac uses a bag to catch debris and I use one to collect leaves on the bottom. It isn't as good for mulm unless you get the extra bags for that purpose. The price is hard to beat. It adds water to your pond so prepare as for a water change. The Python pond vac is a more elaborate version of the Muck vac designed to collect leaves and mulm. It is more difficult to get into tight places and I have a problem opening and closing the jar that collects the debris because my hands hurt a lot. The pond vacuum on this page is pretty expensive but you can get a garage(utility)vac with a continuous flow(water)discharge for between $75 and $90. It works, too. Just add a hose to run the water to the garden. I got one at Walmart and I've seen them at Lowes, Menards, etc. It took me a while to get the hang of it but Horton came through for me with proper instructions. UV, UV. Hum-mm. I don't see anywhere the flow rate would be low enough to let the UV work. I see you have valves all through the system that makes in-line space at a premium even if it lets you adjust the flow. It seems to me that adding another pipe with a valve to control that flow would make the system complicated to the point of maintenance inefficiency and it would certainly raise the scream level. Maybe I am wrong. Since you are going to move, I would use a small submersible pump and a stand alone UV + filter. It might even be possible to get by with only the sponge included prefilter to protect the pump. The object is to increase dwell time to allow the UV time to work. You can get small fountain pumps for cheap. Try Harbour Freight.I found the UV and filter from Laguna on sale for 45 bucks. several years ago. That screwdriver must be a sign of ingenuity or ineptitude. I don't know which. One of these days you will laugh at it. In a number of stores I see wire shelves that are stackable in the laundry and storage departments. I don't see how deep the hole is but I bet you could find one of those shelves that would fit close enough. You might need to do a bit of bending or cutting. Please do not put stones on the bottom of the pond. It will make cleaning an impossible task and eventually the water will become stinky. Now I will let the smart guys take over. I have also thought about the trim being a different white. My trim is painted a bright white through out the house. I should know, I am the one that painted it last summer after moving in!!!!!! After looking at pictures of different kitchens, I found one by BamaSpice (I love her kitchen) and her cabinets are a different color than her trim and it looks good. Hmmmmm, maybe I can find a link to her kitchen. I am still considering Alabaster. I have started in my laundry room and out of 12 doors (though I had 10), I have primed 4 of them. They look realy good even if it is just primer.

MsAnnie.. I so get the need for change-- especially after you've been through something big. I think changing the wall color is a great idea! I immediately thought a yellow/gold would brighten things up without changing the "feel" of the room too much-- but in one of the photos, I saw a close up of your sofa and wasnt sure how well it would work. It's so hard to tell with photos. I also think a sage green would work well. I know it's a color you see everywhere, but it is one of my "comfort colors". I just always feel good when wearing or seeing the various gray-greens and gold-greens. What colors make you feel good? Warm or cool?

Of the two, I guess I would go with the lighter, as it connectes well with the paint color and will feel like a trim color would in any room. If you go with the lighter one, you might also go that color with the narrow 1/2 round on the top and bottom of the decorative trim area, as you mentioned. That would give another link with the lighter base. FWIW, I would skip the accent tiles on the floor. I think they add some interest on the trim in the shower, but I think they will be too much everywhere on the floor.

Love them both. But, I like second one best. Bright colors can perk up a room and appeal to younger crowd.

Interesting point MRG! It's possible that K will eventually see S's quilt, but they will be different sizes, different backings and border treatments.

I really like the "younger vibe" comment. That may make the decision for me.

Oh, and the other was my "Wife-in-Law" quilt, LOL.

I really like both as well. I was trying to figure out what was bugging me about the second one, and I think it is the darker border. It seems to sap some of the color out for me. It is still a beautiful quilt, mind you, but my taste is a little on the BRIGHT side, lol. If you use a different, brighter border then #2 is the one I would pick.

I like the first one, too. We are not helping you to decide - are we? Sort of an even split. I think that means it's safe to go with either.

Both are great and for me the first one would work but for the GF I would choose the second one as I think the plaid effect works for the younger group. Will be interested in seeing your finished results. Jayne

This might sound crazy, but you could ask her? My nieces are really into bright wild, 60s stuff. I have a niece who just turned 21 and I want to start working on a quilt for her graduation in May. I'm thinking of doing the Oh Fransson Quilt Along that has a lot of brights on white in her sample.

My goodness, both are beautiful. If she really likes (and oo's and ahhh's) over the one in the quest room I would give her that one, if you decide not to you can send it to me instead ;) I think this is the first quilt that I really really like!!
I'm not a quilter but is this a purchased pattern? I absolutely love the colors, they look tye dyed.

Actually, I don't want to ask her.

My son knows I want to make her a quilt, but I told him I'd do something vile to him if he let on, LOL. I had him query her and observe her surroundings about colors and such, but that has been over a 6 month period. And I did tell my son that there will not be a quilt for Christmas - I don't have the time or energy.

But he helped pick out fabrics. Her birthday is in early April, so I have plenty of time.

I have seen the Oh, Fransson site, and I love those quilts, but they won't work with the fabrics I already have.

I'm leaning towards the second design I posted, at the moment. Nothing will be done until after the holidays.

We must have been typing at the same time. I just used graph paper to develop my patterns. I never buy quilt patterns.

The fabrics are Bali batiks from Hancock's of Paducah, and are called Bali batiks.

Gotcha Mary. Not that asking my niece helped, she never did say what her favorite colors were, so she's getting every color! I know whatever you make will be beautiful and she'll love it.

Sounds like you've pretty much decided on the second one. I really like them both, but the second is a better choice for a younger woman. I'm smiling because as a "woman of a certain age," I'm drawn to the first!

Very beautiful and ambitious gift, the girl must be a keeper.

I like the first one (but then I am also a "woman of a certain age"), but I think for a 21st birthday the second would be a better choice.

I like them both a lot. I am a big fan of brights and batik.

My vote is for #2. Personally, I find #1 to be soothing and #2 to have more energy.

Thanks for all the opinions - I like the first one best, too.

And evidently, so does my son, LOL! He looked at both pictures and said definitely the square in square quilt. So that's probably what I will make.

We had our first holiday celebration tonight - My step-son, his wife, and 2 children are here from Japan, and they leave incredibly early morning Christmas day. We have to have them at the airport by 4 am.

But a lovely time was had by all - a nice dinner, presents for the grands, and the GF in question got a lovely cashmere sweater, and was thrilled. She leaves tomorrow to go back to her family for the main holiday. I was pleased she could spend a bit of time with us, and she was thrilled to meet Paul's older brother and family. She was so wonderful with the children, even with the language barrier.

I think she's a keeper. I like her for her own self, and it's not dependent on whether or not she's dating my son. She's just a lovely person.
