Just In! Nestle recalls Toll House cookie dough products

NEW YORK (AP) Â Food maker Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.

The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough.

In a statement, the FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restauranteurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.

The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

The recall covers all varieties of prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough but does not include Toll House chocolate chips or baking bars, or Dreyer's and Edy's ice cream products with Nestle Toll House cookie dough ingredients.

Most recipes for about anything call for LARGE eggs... guessing for consistency? I always buy XL or Jumbo, since I can get them at nice little Asian market for less than $2/doz and often only $1.50. Just had a Bottom Dollar supermarket open up in my neighborhood... a "no-frills" place, bring your own bags, limited brands (ex... soup is either Campbell's or store brand, that's about it). They had Jumbos for $1.18! NOT big into baking but blame a few semi-fails on XL/Jumbo eggs. Made Paula Deen's pound cake... starts in cold oven. Wanna say bake time is something like 110 minutes!?! It took at LEAST and hour and a half to get a clean toothpick. Ya might also wanna check your oven temp. I bought an oven thermometer and set at 350, was only registering about 325. I bumped it up to 375 and thermometer was right about where it should be on temp.

I had forgotten about the tip to pull the ball apart and rotate the top. I did that several times when I first read about it and it worked great. Always1step, what kind of butter did you use? I was just reading on the King Arthur blog about which butters to use for baking. They recommend an 80% fat content butter, their preferred is Cabot. Land O'Lakes and Costco were brought up in the comments of the article as being comparable. King Arthur opinion is that European butters like Plugra and Kerrygold, with their higher fat content, may not produce the desired results. A light bulb went off in my head at that, as I recently made scones and they spread all over the place - and I had used Kerrygold. When you mentioned 'thin as a lace cookie, pliable and sticky," I thought along the same lines as Carol_w_fl. Too bad none of us were there to see where exactly your cookies took a turn for . . . the better ☺ First, I would find out if the 'light' butter used might've been vegan 'butter' (whose main ingredients are vegetable oil and water). In which case, I would avoid adding more water to your recipe, because while adding more liquid will make the cookie spread, it will also make it too delicate. Replicate every step you remember, except, reduce the amount of flour by half. But keep the 3 cups of oatmeal the same. To avoid 'ruining' an entire batch of cookies, prepare the recipe as indicated on the Quaker Oats box, but reserve half of the (combined) dry ingredients, and set aside. Then, add only half the flour mixture to the butter/sugar/egg mixture. Bake only one or two cookies (on parchment paper) to test for consistency. You should get what you're looking for. If not, add the reserved flour mixture to the cookie batter, and proceed as directed. But, if you end up with another happy mistake, you'd better build a wall around it. Sol

I had to start using Enjoy Life chocolate chip years ago, because they are postive daily free. They are 10oz when all others were still 12 oz. All my recipes used 12oz. I have a scale and weighed the chips. 2 oz of chips are about 1/4 cup. So if you cannot weigh, just add 1/4 cup extra to the 10 oz bag.
