A little of whats been consuming me...

I thought I'd come share a bit of my new obsession, that I do in my "spare time" (I say that with the most sarcasm). How much spare time does a stay at home mom to a 2 and 4 year old get??

Anyway, here are a few pics. I have so much fun with these!

Oh my - they are absolutely stupendous. Those bows look perfect and I love last one with all the animals. They could win a prize.

You all are so kind Mary- that huge shrub is a rhody.. starting to bloom right now- let's pray all this rain doesnt dash it all to bits this year! I hate that. Gotta Garden.. yes- I am goign to try the larger rocks when i get a chance :) You all can notice the difference? I look at these pics and think- gosh for all that work- it doenst show much of a change! :( Msscarlet- thank you for thinking my home is pretty. It's a little hosue- but i think it's kinda cute.. and i hope i get the cottagey feel across. I hear what you're saying about that blue spruce that blocks the view. it will only get bigger too... but here's the thing.. getting rid of that ONE might not make a difference- as you cna see in the pic- there is a HUGE one next to it and and even bigger one next to that one!!! haha. at first i hated them but I am rather attached to them now.. and this small one is the only one i can attempt to decorate for christmas. haha PLUS- there is actually a VAST amount of space betwee that spruce and the first corner bed by the house.. the angle the photo was taken at it straight one.. but coming from the other direction yu can actually see th ewhoel house.. i'll try to take different shtos for you guys and you can tell me what you think. Now Gladno1.. yours is the silliest question..hahahakeep bermuda grass out of my beds? You make me laugh!are you kidding me? what do you think i do all spring- march to may!! I dig out all the bermuda grass and re-edge my gardens.. it's horrendous. if anyone knows any trick- please tell me.. but i'm with you gladno.. this stuff is eveil. the only good thing is that it requires no water and stays short in summer and crowds out the weeds. however- it is EATING my driveway too.. can you believe it??!!! now you know why i need hired help right? all my energy goes into keepig bermuda grass out of my beds. haha

Help me ID this tiny vine that's consuming my backyard!

i get the same vine growing along the edge of my yard near the ditch. i just cut it back with the mower and spray it with round up. this keeps it in check, but the only way i have ever gotten rid of it was to totally kill off everything in the ditch, but this lead to erosion, so now i spray a low dose to stun and slowly kill back the weeds.

Here are my thoughts based on my experience: 1. How do you look for hvac contractor? Yellow page, internet, friends, families? >A combination of asking friends and searching for factory authorized dealers listed on specific brand web sites. 2. What do you think first when choosing a new hvac system. The brand name or the contractor? what brand do you like the most? >The focus is usually brand name first since most people don't know who is a good contractor. Carrier and Trane get the most name brand recoginiton. 3. When getting bid, do you prefer talking to a saleman or a contractor? And can you tell if he's a saleman or contractor? >I want to talk to someone who know more about the equipment and installation than I do. I am turned off if the salesman does not know his product. A salesman wants to talk about price quickly, a contractor is interested in putting together a system which best suits the customer's needs. 4. What made you decide to choose that contractor? is it because he give you alot of information, about how new system will be install, the warranties, the prices. >The contractor I chose did all the measurements for thorough Manual J calculation during his first visit. On the second visit he showed me the calculation and spreadsheets of several combinations of furnaces and condensers which were sized for my home. The spreadsheets had model numbers, prices, and the available local and federal rebates. The contractor is a small family run business and a Carrier factory authorized dealer. 5. What do you expect out of an hvac contractor when they are giving you the bid? Another words,what made you decide to not choose the contractor? >I did not choose two contractors who did not want to do a Manual J calculation. I thought this was very low rent for such an expensive washer. Even people who don't use FS may use vinegar. There is no feedback on programming. You can program in an extra rinse but there is no way I can see to look at the machine and tell if it is going to do one rinse or two. F&P recommend deep fill for sheets, whites, bulky and Easy Iron. So maybe 50-60% of the washing sees an energy (water)saving? I like that it has 1000 RPM spin... clothes dry faster. As for cleaning ability... it seems adequate. I haven't had it long enough to have any challenging tasks. If I could change anything it would be to add a fs dispenser and an internal heater to easily reach sanitizing temps.

Unbelievable! Incredibly beautiful cakes, Steph. What a talent!

I should show you a picture of the last cake I decorated. It was horrendous. hahaha Definitely not my skill!

I was just thinking of you yesterday Steph and wondering where you were. I figured you were busy with the kids but now I see what else has been keeping you busy. The cakes are beautiful. I bet the kids would just love to gobble them up.

Thank you everyone! I sell some here and there. I also do cupcakes, cake pops too. It's been fun.

No, I have not taken any lessons. I'm self taught with the help of tv shows, online blogs and video tutorials. I still have alot to learn but I'm having fun along the way.

Are you licensed to sell it or do you just sell to friends/family? I'm trying to relocate to California so I'm researching some of the laws. They seem to be the strictest state about home baking, which is a little disappointing. It sounds like you have to make a big investment in a kitchen not attached to your home, or bake in a rental kitchen, to sell to the public. I'm not licensed in MA but sometimes my friends commission me to make bday cakes and things like that but not to the general public.

I have a Cricut cake but none of these were done using it. I don't use it often.

The cakes I've "sold" were just for friends and I didn't make any actual money. They just paid me for what i had in supplies. It's a fun hobby for friends and family but not as a job!! I already have a job with my kids!! LOL

Beautiful, Steph! My SIL took a Wilton class years ago, and gave us a beautifully decorated cake for Easter. She knows all about fondant, royal icing, etc. Congrats on your new obsession! Now please post some pics of Grant and Camryn. They must be SO BIG!!!

And I thought there'd be nothing to top the pictures of the cake pops! They are wonderful cakes, Steph. A lot of people don't care for fondant, but I just love it. Had it on my daughter's wedding cake and there wasn't a crumb left over!

Only thing that could be sweeter would be pictures of the kiddos (hint, hint).

Your cakes are stunning! Hard to pick out a favorite, but that two layered one with the baby tag on it is incredible! I love the combination of colors.

Steph, I've heard fondant icing is very hard to work with, so I've never tried it. Do you make your own or buy it? I think if I ever decide to try it, I'll buy it unless you say homemade is better. And tell me how :-)!

I only recently tried making marshmellow fondant and hated every second of it. It was a pain. I'll stick to store bought fondant. I actually think it's pretty easy to work with unless it's too dry then it can give you problems, especially when covering a cake. Of the cakes above, only the batman and present cake are fondant covered. The others are just frosted with buttercream. I dont mind using fondant or gum paste to make decorations but I still struggle with covering a whole cake with it. It's a tricky process that I have yet to master. But I'm learning more every cake I do.

My son has requested a firetruck cake for his upcoming birthday. It's quiet elaborate and I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how to do it and I only have a week and a half to figure it out. I made the ladder already but that's about all so far. It *should* be cute when it's done.

Holy batman, Steph, that ain't no craft, that is art! LOL! And self taught to boot! You are wonderful, you could definitely do this professionally. If you don't wish to go thru all the red tape you might think about doing it for a bakery on a 'as needed' basis. You are terrific.

Steph...your cakes are just wonderful! A hint to help with covering a cake with fondant is to roll in back onto the roller, then onto the cake or to roll it on clear plastic then turn the plastic over the cake and slowly peel it away from the fondant. Sounds weird but it works well, especially on larger layers.

I've heard about the clear mat trick and got a mat to try but haven't done a cake yet since I got it. I definitely want to try though! My problem seems to be that the fondant tears. I think I'm rolling it too thin.

Thanks for the tip though!!! I'm anxious to try it.

Another tip is to coat the cake with ganache instead of buttercream before applying the fondant. I haven't tried it yet, but apparently you get better corners using ganache. Having said that... your work is terrific!
