Opinions on coffee table

Hi, GWers!

The spouse and I are in a disagreement about a coffee table I bought today. Paid $8 for it at Goodwill, so I don't have my heart set on it or anything. I mainly picked it up for use when we have company and we're all sitting on the sectional. (Otherwise, my husband and I use an ottoman and side tables.)

It's a very casual room. Blonde wood floors, brick fireplace, light wood built-in bookcases around the fireplace. Sectional is a medium-dark brown.

Here is the the table (or the ugliness according to the spouse):

Please excuse the garage; I need to clean it and I'm currently trying to talk its way into the house. LOL

It might not look like it in the photo, but it IS solid wood. Though I think the tabletops are some kind of laminate. There were matching tiered end tables (rectangular), but I didn't buy them.

To sum up, I like it. My husband thinks it looks like cheap junk and is suited for a garage, not a den.

I usually like MCM, but I'd remove the small top and add an interesting decorative insert or stone overlay. If that appeals to you, bounce that idea of DH and see if it can make its way into the den.

Its actually a corner lamp table to be used between two sofas at a right angle or a sofa and deep chairs. The upper tier gets a lamp, the underneath is for magazines and the L shaped part is to serve the sofas.

Its probably very low, near seat height or just above. Its kind of a Heywood Wakefield knock off, with a very strong midcentury vernacular or atomic modern style. For 8 bucks its a bargain but its hard to say how it fits in without seeing the rest of the furniture.

I agree with those who say it doesn't work with your look (which is soooo charming!). I once saw a great coffee table made from the bottom of an antique potbelly stove with a beautiful piece of wood on the top. I see something interesting and unique like that in your home. Something that is beautiful in it's rustic charm. Staples Cabinet Makers did the table I mentioned above and a number of other really interesting designs. I like the iron grate table they have now-- and the hay loft door too. I always check them out for inspiration (I'd buy from them too-- but it would need to be the right piece since they are a good day's travel away) Here is a link that might be useful: Staples Cabinet Makers

They have one of these units at my kids' orthodontists office. Lots of variety, even tea, but it is pretty expensive for psudo-instant coffee, around $30 per pound, IIRC. For that kind of cash, you can get some of the TOP rated coffees in the world. I use the TMM that Rhome mentions. I have used one for several years and am very satisfied, but that's just my opinion. Down and dirty cheap is a pour over cone with paper filters as mentioned by sfjeff. You can get a herkin' big one and brew directly into a thermos or carafe (try sweet maria's website). The Keurig offers convenience. Coffee is mediocre and expensive. But if you don't drink it often, maybe the expense isn't an issue if you're having to throw out stale coffee. Have you tried the coffee? Do you like it? If so, go for it. You can buy a "pod" that let's you use your own coffee when you've got the time and inclination. BTW, coffeegeek.com has a forum of consumer reviews for all types of coffee makers.

The actual sofa won’t be delivered till November but I’ll post the sectional from their web site, except ours will be in the material I posted. The floors are the same as in the kitchen photo... limestone. I am not home now but I’ll post a photo of a neighbor’s kitchen/ family room with the same layout, just different flooring etc. It’s hard to see but there’s a big TV across from the sofa and a fireplace. Our sectional will not be quite as long as theirs is on the wall with the windows.

Would you pull the rug toward the t v wall so all legs of blue sofa are on it and pull it over so left leg of sectional is on it. Is that art in the niche high up on the wall? If so, find an eye level spot for it. A coffee table with stools would work for you.

abundantblessings - Great idea! I'll have to mull it over and see what I can come up with. It was so cheap, I can definitely have some fun with it.

palimpset - I could just smack myself! I was so set on looking for a square coffee table that I didn't think of the actual use for it. Yes, that makes complete sense for placement and use. I was thinking how great it would be to have the glasses on the bottom tier and a plate of snacks on the top tier. Always focused on the refreshments, me. :-)

I'm kind of leaning toward thinking a round coffee table might suit things better and balance out all the right angles in the room. If so, I'm sure I can find a use for this table someplace; I may even keep it in the garage for my coffee roaster and supplies.

I purposely didn't post the rest of the furniture/room because it was just the table I wanted opinions on. Appreciate the input from you both!

Though I'm sure it's just a knock off as Pal said, I do love those corner tables. I have a solid walnut one in my Ladies Parlor and would love to find another one to match. It's a shame you broke up a whole set though. I think I'd have to re-donate it in hopes someone else that loves MCM would get it.

Years ago I had a table like that...blond wood and all...and used it in the corner of a sectional. Then we moved, I put the sectional straight like a couch and used this table as a coffee table. I took off the top part and that made it a flat square table. I put a hugh round doily to cover up the holes and put a bowl of flowers in the center. Got many compliments on it. I like the idea of putting something on the top to cover the holes like tile, stick on tile or even contact paper would work. So no, I don't think it is ugly...just have to experiment. Could even be painted.

Your post and response to Pal's knowledge about the table cracked me up. That's totally something I can relate to. Like others have said, if it was only 8.00 you got a bargain! I sure hope you'll find a way to use it that both you and DH will like.
