Does anyone know about body work on a car?

My car is a 1999 Volkswagen Passat. Over the past couple months, the front bumper has mostly fallen off, probably because I went up over a curb. It's taken awhile, but it can't be fixed now, because the little holes for the bolts are broken.

I would like to replace the bumper, but not spend too much money. I looked on a number of car discussion sites, and the consensus seems to be that replacing the part with a new OEM bumper would cost about $800 - $300 for the part, $300 to paint it, and $200 for labor.

Other posters suggested going to junkyards to look for a used part, possibly one in the same color as your car. (My Passat is dark green, which seems to have been the #1 color for Passats of that era, so I would think that parts are available.)

I don't even know how to start with any of this. Can I ask a body shop to look for a used part in the right color? (I realize that the color lot could be slightly off, but I'll live with it to save the cost of custom paint.) Can I look for the part, myself, and take it to the body shop to be installed?

I'm always hearing about people who know someone who knows someone who does some work on the side in their driveway. I wish I could find one of these someones!
