Ack! I got a Coach purse and wallet as a gift

They are SO lovely. They're made of light blue, incredibly soft leather. The thing is, I'm scared to use them! I looked it up online, and the combined regular retail price (of the purse and wallet) is $600. I SO don't do expensive purses. I'm a thrift store shopper. I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 for a purse in my life. Now, I'm sure my aunt didn't pay that much for it - she's a chronic outlet mall shopper, but STILL.... My purses double as diaper bags, and are likely to be drooled on!

Do you think I should just forget about how much it costs and use it as a beautiful every day bag? Or should I hang it in my closet and use it on the rare occasion when I go out childless?

talley_sue, I typed in "wallet purse" into Google and got pages. The *first one on the list* was this one: http://www.bagglady.com/Wallet_purses.html It looks kind of clunky to me but if you go to http://www.nextag.com/wallet-purse/search-html (#2 on the Google search) you can browse through wallet purses of all sorts. Most are the "wallet on a string thingy" though but they do have the larger wallet purses. ******* Someone earlier mentioned useing a mens style wallet to reduce bulk in a purse. I would suggest rather getting what is known as a 'European slide wallet'. I have one and they are very thin and lightweight. They look good becasue they are made of very thin leather rather than nylon which looks too sporty for my tastes. They can be slipped into the inside pocket of a suit or slid into the back pocket of jeans or into the tiny inside pocket of a purse. They come in colors. What is nice about slide wallets is that they have a *zippered coin compartment*, something that mens wallets do not have. This is an example of how they look but is not the one I have. Mine is a simple black shoulder purse...a leather rectangle about 6in. long and 4in. high. There are 5 compartments - a pocket on the front, two main compartments with a zippered compartment in the middle, and a pocket that zips on the back. The back pocket is the only one "exposed" - a large flap covers the main compartments and the front pocket, and has a magnetic clasp. I think I got it a couple of years ago at a department store for $10 or so. It's my "winter" purse. In the front pocket, I keep my pens and work ID, a few business cards, and the occasional shopping list. I try to keep that pocket clear of anything else, so I can easily find a pen when I need one. The first inner compartment holds my checkbook(s) and receipts, the zippered pocket holds change/cash, and the compartment behind that holds a small kleenex holder w/tissues, drugs (painkillers), a teeny bottle of lotion, and any "female" stuff that I need. My planner will fit in there, but I don't carry it, really. The back zippered pocket I rarely use for much - my insurance cards are in there, and not much else. Credit and store cards are in my checkbook. I've always carried a shoulder bag - even in college I just stuck my purse in a big leather shoulder bag I carried books and paper in. I never really cared much for backpacks, and I hate straps across my body, so I guess it's a good thing I don't live in a place where stealing purses is a common crime (two ladies snatched a couple of purses from people shopping at our local walmart last year - they were caught almost immediately and sent to jail for it - and it was big news here). ;-) I do put my purse in the front of carts, but I *never* leave it...if I have to walk away from the cart, my purse goes back on my shoulder, even if DH is with the cart. And the strap of my purse stays securely looped over my knee (tightly, so I can feel it) with my purse on the floor at my feet while I'm in a restarant, so I always know where it is. When I'm watching DH play pool in a bar or something, I leave my purse on the floor of the truck tucked mostly under the dash - when it's dark out, you can't see the black purse...it blends right in with the floor. ;-)

Let's see, I found a handsome leather tote style bag at Kohls...two tone, black and brown. I also found a beautiful floral coated canvas and leather bag on Amazon. I paid about $150 for both. In the meantime, I've visited a couple of our busy thrift stores on a good day. One had just recieved a large load of donated items, including mostly designer clothing and accessories. I picked up a couple of pretty belts, scarves, and a navy Coach bag......all for $20. I also wrote them a check for a donation....it was too much of a bargain, lol. P.S. Just wanted to add that there were several handbags in that shipment, but the others were just too branded with logos for my taste. Gorgeous, but not my style at any price. I think I have 6 or 7 wallets in different configurations and switch them depending on the size bag I'm carrying or if I need to accommodate more cards or other items but I don't bother matching wallet to purse. The one I've been carrying for about a year is a RFID passport case with 7 slots for credit cards and a photo ID window. It's bright red so I can find it quickly in my purse. I store the cash in one of the interior zipper pockets. http://www.levenger.com/RFID-Passport-Sleeve-13235.aspx Many years ago I used to carry a clutch-type wallet that had slots for 14 cards, a place for checkbooks, a coin holder, 2 more sections for cash, receipts etc. But now that credit or debit cards are so easy to use I haven't carried my checkbook in years.

I think we met at a thrift store somewhere!!! I too buy my purses from there too and come across some real nice ones, but my daughter presented me with a tan Coach purse with a blue Coach wallet for Christmas. She, too, bought it at an outlet store in Orlando. She was so excited that she had tears in her eyes when I was opening it. I don't care about brand names, but I do have to admit that I LOVE the style of this Coach purse. I use it everyday and it pleases my daughter to no end. I've even gotten quite a few remarks from other ladies about what a beautiful Coach purse I have. Use it every day and enjoy it. It will make your Aunt very happy!

Absolutly use it! I used to save things for later, and then my MIL moved out of her house to go to the nursing home...she had drawers full of things she was saving to use for 'special'!! Guess what, SHE never got to use them!

I'd use it. Coach purses hold up very well and the company offers, at least around here, free cleaning...so check around and take advantage of the free cleaning when necessary.

Definitely use it. I have a simple Coach bag that I bought somewhere around 1988. I've used it regularly for more than 20 years, and it still looks great. They're made to last.

Use it! After spending my whole life buying inexpensive purses, I finally broke down and bought a $300 Dooney & Bourke purse. Of course my dh has no idea what I paid for it. lol

But the D&B purse should last a lifetime, and it is so well made. In fact, I bought a summer purse from D&B a month ago, it was a $100.

Coach is a great brand, in this case you get what you pay for.

Definitely use it. My purse/diaper bag is always a Coach bag. I have a few I rotate between and love them. They're roomy, very well made, comfortable to carry and hold up beautifully.

Enjoy it. The blue sounds very pretty and summery!

I might wait till I am past the diapers and ointment and outfit change in the purse before using it so as not to stretch it out. The only thing I have heard is that the leather is so soft that it scratches. But do use it either now or when you leave the diaper carrying stage. Why else would you have it?

I am reminded of the last day I carried a plastic baggie of Cheerios in my purse about 30 years ago. We all were at a lovely shopping center that had water and ducks, and I gave the 3 kids the Cheerios to feed the ducks. It was a suitable end to an era.

I have several "knockoff" Coach purses. They almost look like the real thing. They work for me. I have other things to spend that kind of money on...like orchids! LOL

Yes use it! Sydney is addicted to Coach!! They are so well made...and made of Leather so if the kids drool or do anything on them...just clean them as you would leather furniture.....I have one that is totally awesome.....so durable...have had it for 4 or more years now..and looks brand new! Stacy

I am the worlds worst 'save it for good".
I didn't realize how bad it was until my daughter was purchasing some things for me for Mother's Day....Her fiance asked her why she was getting 2 of everything and she said
"You don't know Mom- she can "save one for the Pope, and use the other...lol"
I really don't have a reason for saving all this stuff, but it really is a problem....I need to deal with it....I have things that I really loved and bought and have never used....

I received my first one as a gift for Christmas and it took me a while to use it. But I LOVE it! I'm very careful though so I don't mess it up. I can be rough on bags.

Enjoy it. And I hear you become hooked after just one.

I just bought one. I have never spent that much money on a purse but it is so cute. I saw someone with it at Kohl's and fell in love with it and went home and found it online and bought it. I love it. Use it Nicole and enjoy it. My mom jokes with me that if someone steals it, they can keep my wallet, just give me my Coach purse back lol.

lol..dd2 dound a coach summer bag at one of the outlets..she used it often for a diaper bag...it was just the right size and a lot easier than th "excutive" diaper bag she recieved, and weighed a ton....

Use them Nicole, as the leather ages it becomes more lovely and more supple. I have carried Coach bags for many years, they have become more beautiful as time has gone by. Coach sells a wonderful leather protector, use that on the bag, it willo help it repel water and dirt.

Nicole, I have a niece who has a 3 1/2 and a 2 1/2 y/o, and has carried Coach purses since before the girls, and still carries. She ALWAYS carries it/them! Use it!

I bought a coach bag on eBay. It is too small to use regularly. I prefer a roomy purse. I do use my DB bag all summer.
