I agree SalGal, Taking Chance was a tough movie.

The first movie that ever made an impression on me and has haunted me ever since 1973 is Soylent Green.

I just read that a remake is currently in the works. I guess it will be interesting comparing the two.

Star Wars...The music, the way the movie started with the scroll and then the perspective of the huge star fighter. Wow!

The other movie that was memorable for me was Lenny. I was very young and I was sad for days after seeing the movie. I realized then that I can't watch some kinds of movies in a theatre because they are too overwhelming emotionally.

No doubt, The Passion of the Christ....i cried for DAYS!!

Taking Chance and Pay It Forward. Only two movies I've ever bought for myself.

A few come to mind but The Notebook was definatly one.

Soooo many to choose from, but I remember "U-571" making me physically ill and shook me up pretty bad.

Any Hayao Miyazaki movie (Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, etc.) stay with me long after I see them. :)

oooh - I forgot about The Notebook... and Bridges of Madison County. Gut wrenching self examination.

Mask with Cher. I could watch that movie over and over. Great cast, I loved the complexity of the movie and its characters. Loved the way they more or less realistically portrayed the "outlaw" bikers of the era.

Favorite to watch just for kicks is The Usual Suspects. No matter how many time you see it there is always some nuance that was missed before. I thought by now I would have a new fave...but no.

I love love love dirty dancing,patrick in that movie my oh mymmmmmmmmmmm I will never forget it.seen it 50 times.I also loved the movie Roots...

The movie Dancer in the Dark made me depressed for days. I cried so hard in the theatre I almost couldn't catch my breath. SO sad!

I wouldn't say it's the "most memorable", but I'd have a hard time picking something to fit that title.

Our Time starring Pamela Sue Anderson and Parker Stevenson. I saw it when I was about 13 years old and my friend and I cried all the way home. I think of that movie from time to time and would love to be able to find it to buy it.

I looked up Taking Chance on Netflix. I just don't think I could make it through.

Most memorable for would be War of the Worlds because it scared me so much when I was 8 years old.

But memorable in a good way, I liked "Ghost" because I like the idea that loved ones are still with us after they pass away.

I will have to vote for The Notebook and Bridges of Madison County also. I've seen Bridges at least 20 times.
DH could do the part without a script.

My all time favorite is Shawshank Redemption. I think this is one of the top 10 movies of all time, if not top 5. And I only leave leeway for those I haven't seen that "might" be better.

Notebook is awesome too. Sound of Music is another.

Definitely Passion of the Christ - very impactful. And believe me I am not a romance movie person - but movies from a number of years ago "got" to me - Continental Divide with John Belushi and Blair Brown - omg I cry every time I see it, and another - Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour - another tear jerker for sure! I remember when I had my first DD I was up every 4 hrs feeding her & one of these movies came on TV and I stayed up to watch & cried & rocked & cried & rocked the baby.

I plan to try & see those recommended by KT buds!

Has to be Psycho, Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. Scared the dickens out of me! I once jerked the shower curtain down when I saw a shadow pass. It was my husband and he's never let me forget it. Couldn't watch that again.

I loved And Justice For All with Al Pacino and Jack Warden.

I don't really get involved in movies, I mean they don't actually affect me in any way other than for entertainment value.

The most entertaining one that I can remember offhand was Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Really enjoyed that movie and have watched it many times.

The Wizard of Oz-scared the dickens out of me when I was a kid, especially when the house landed on the witch and her feet curled up.

Gone with the Wind-loved, loved, loved the book and then the movie.

Hachi-cried for hours afterwords.

The way we were-I wanted to marry Robert Redford and BE Barbra Streisand

I'm with old gardener, Close Encounters, loved it!!! Madison county also, cried like a baby.

Oh, I have to agree about On The Beach. I had bought the book to read in the hospital when I had my first (1960, when we spent 5 days in the hospital). But, I read it before, and spent weeks thinking "why should I bother, we will all be gone by then". Whoa, had to snap out of that mindset fast!! I still can't watch the movie.

I loved The Passion of the Christ, Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, and True Grit (the newer one with Jeff Bridges). After some of you were saying how good Taking Chance was, I'll probably see it on Netflix soon.

Oh, Dances with Wolves, yes, I forgot about that one.

My most memorable movie experience was seeing a restored copy of Abel Gance's 1927 French silent movie "Napoleon" way back in 1982. I still have the elegant program that accompanied the film showing.

My city had recently restored a 1920ties movie palace to its former glory, and this showing was a dress-up affair. I believe there was a live symphony orchestra playing the score.

I loved the accompanying music score so much, I went out & tracked down the LP recording. I still play it occasionally on my victrola.

For me, for a lot of reasons, one of the most memorable (although it can be a little hard to watch) is Deliverance. We were assigned the book to read in a college lit class the year before the movie came out--definitely one of the most well-written books I've read--ever. James Dickey is an amazing author. And he did the screen play, so the movie is true to the book.

There are so many impactful things about the movie--the scenary is incredible, the acting is pretty amazing (especially when you think that only one of the 4 had EVER rowed a boat before they were cast). It's a breakout film for several of the main actors. Many of the supporting cast were actually the hill people (the sheriff was Dickey, though). Unlike many films, it was filmed mostly in sequence. It's just such an incredible, unforgetable, beautiful, terrifying film from beginning to end.

Probably Gone with the Wind on the big screen. No I'm not that old - a movie theatre was playing it..

The Christmas Rose - a made for tv movie in which a woman goes back home after her divorce. It turned out the people she was seeing were really dead and she had somehow willed herself home again.

These days I am remembering Pete's Dragon because Mom and I went to Radio City Music Hall to see it and the Christmas show. Missing Mom....

Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart,any movie made in the Civil War Era. I also love all the Love Comes Softly series of movies made from Janette Oaks books.

Another one that I'll never forget because I did not foresee the ending: The Sixth Sense. It was the one with the little boy that said 'I see dead people'. Maybe most people had it figured out, but not me. It came as a complete surprise.

"Gallipoli", "Sophie's Choice" and "The Dead" were all difficult and very memorable.

"Roman Holiday" is memorable for the scene at the end where you realize that the protagonists won't be together.

And then there's "Much Ado About Nothing," one of my favorites ...

The Green Mile.

My very favourite is The Notebook. I've watched it numerous times and cry like a baby every time.

I adore Shining Through with Melanie Griffith and Michael Douglas. I love Steel Magnolias, I have women in my life that we get along like that, and they are my absolute rock steady foundations. Sally Field rips my heart and guts out in the end of that movie every single time I watch it. I have to leave the room.

Dancing With Wolves was great. I know there's more, I just can't think.

The Exorcist - I was 8 or so hiding around a corner while my mom was watching it. Horrified me and when the commercials came on again when they replayed it in theaters, I had to change the channel. Oh, and one time when I was babysitting when I was about 13 or so, I put the 6 year old to bed and probably within ten minutes, she was screaming, I went upstairs to check on her and she was on her knees banging her head on her pillow screaming so what comes to my mind - The Excorcist. I was young so I did the "Kara, Kara, are you okay" no answer so I was so freaked out I had to sit outside until the parents came home. Apparently, this was how she put herself to sleep. A heads up would have been nice. No 13 year olds watch my kids, BTW, ha ha.

All three versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers......

The most memorable would have to be the original 'Last House on the Left.'

I was a young girl when I saw it and it scared the daylights out of me. At the time, I had no idea there were people in the world like that. Now I'm older and wiser and leary of people I don't know.

Testament is the one movie I will never forget.

So many of these are among my most memorable, but Taking Chance has to be the MOST. My heart swells every time that I think about the movie....but then DH being a Marine and having served during Vietnam and all that...just touches me.Soylent Green...a more thought provoking movie??? Don't think so. And so many historic epics like GWTW, How the West was Won, and more.

kathy -- Funny you'd mention Pete's Dragon. I loved that; saw it with our DS and looked it up when our DGS was the same age. Meh. Dated, I guess. Just keep on 'remembering' it.

As some of you have noted, "memorable" doesn't always mean "best." I usually avoid movies that are scary or depressing (life is hard enough!), but one of my most memorable was very depressing: The Pledge, with Jack Nicholson. It was very well done, but I wish I didn't remember so much about that movie!

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I will always remember the blues club scene from Adventures in Babysitting. Elisabeth Shue and crew can't leave the place until they sing the blues. So funny!

Million Dollar Baby stayed with me for a long time.

And I will never forget any part of the original An Affair to Remember. Ah, Cary Grant!

I ruined the day of a telephone surveyor not so long ago. He asked to know what movies we'd gone to see recently. Neither DH nor I could remember what we saw last, only that it had been at least five years ago!

We watch lots of movies, but on DVD's from the library. We don't have to be the first to see anything, and if it's a dud, we just return it. Sometimes DH will finish one after I've given up on it.

A Hard Days Night, starring The Beatles, really hit me over the head when I first saw it as a teenager. I can't say how many times I've seen it since, and I still love every minute.

The end of Saving Private Ryan.

I've seen that scene 20+ times. Got moist eyes 20+ times. Even if you don't like war movies, the next time it's on TV check the time and tune in with 5-10 minutes left. After seeing it you might be inclined to watch the whole thing next time around.

All Quiet on the Western Front . A "good" war movie. The first movie I ever saw was Bambi. Wizard of Oz seen through the eyes of a child. I was scared of the Witch and her Flying Monkeys. Thanks for asking. A great question.
