What animal would do this kind of damage?

I posted this in the Hydrangea Forum, but I know we have lots of good gardeners here.

I planted a Little Lamb hydrangea last weekend--no small feat, as my first attempts turned out to be on a rock shelf. I got it from Bluestone, so it was small but healthy. It had two branches, if I can call them that, well leafed out and showing the beginnings of buds. I was excited about watching it grow.

This morning I found both branches cut off and lying on the ground in pieces, complete with leaves. What sort of animal would do that? It must have happened not all that long ago, because not a lot of wilting has taken place.

I don't see any hope of the plant recovering; there's really nothing left to it. I have a Sadie Ray hydrangea waiting to be planted, but I hesitate to put another hydrangea in that place, considering what happened.

Thanks,

Susan
