Insulating an Old Masonry/Stone Faced House

Hello all,

My wife and I recently bought a house that was supposedly built in 1913 but more likely 1931. It was last updated in 70's and is in need or major updating. One positive thing they did somewhat recently was put in new double hung windows and doors. The exterior walls of the first level and walkout basement are about 4" of masonry with flat stone set in. The first floor is mostly gutted and we found out it was not insulated. From the inside out there is 2x4 walls with about 1/2" planking and then 4" of the masonry/stone.

I have been doing a bunch of research as how to best insulate these walls before I cover them back up with sheetrock. I have read a lot about it being best to add insulation to the outside a house but since I don't have that option I am looking for your opinion.

I want a quality DIY insulation that I will be thankful for year after year in the future. What would you recommend?

Also, can you give any insight into the effect of the masonry/stone exterior?

Thanks, Phil
