Retail shopping carts

We walked to the grocery store last nite to get some milk and on the way saw 2 shopping carts that were abandoned on the boulevard and in front of apartment buildings. We took them back to the store.

I hate when people take carts off the store property and just leave them. They are expensive, and duh, we are paying for the loss.

As well, there is a booming "business" of people driving around picking up scrap metal; everything from washing machines, rusty patio furniture to pieces of scrap, because our recycler pays for scrap metal. So people would take the shopping carts and get paid for them, even though they are not "scrap". Now the recycler has put a sign up, saying that they will only take shopping carts if the person has a note from the store authorizing that it is scrap.

2 of our store chains have the locking carts where you insert a quarter. That doesn't prevent the carts from leaving the property though.

And 1 other store has the locking wheels. That is an awesome solution. Pricey in the beginning but the loss is eliminated.
Interestingly enough, the 2 most expensive grocery stores don't have any security for their carts.
