LOTTO - December 2013, last block of the year!

Yes, I do have a calender and yes, I know it's still November. But, with the holiday season coming our way, I thought some of you might want a chance at a head start. And, this is one of my favorites!

With a black background, I used the bright batik fabrics I love but you can easily use any solid black with bright fabric and it will look lovely. It's a contrast thing and will make up a beautiful quilt or wall hanging. This is the North Wind pattern, a 12" block, link below.

It's a bit tricky getting the triangles to come out just right with a 1/4" seam allowance above the points but you'll get the hang of it. I ripped out my first so don't feel bad if you have to as well. It does have waste as the HSTs use five and pattern has you cutting six. The large triangle has you cutting a square in half on the diagonal and throwing away the other half. So, I made them in pairs to use up what I could. That made four blocks and I think we'll make a special this month. If you make four to get the blocks to come out, you may enter four and have four chances, THIS MONTH ONLY. Hope you like it.

Otherwise, the usual rules apply:

1. with your blocks include name, mailing address, forum name and $1 to cover postage for the winning blocks.

2. if possible, either attach your name to the back of each block or write your name in the seam allowance with a fabric pen so the winner knows who made the block (this is not a requirement, just makes it more interesting for the winner).

3. all blocks received by the last day of the month will be included in the lotto drawing

4. you will have 1, 2, 3 or 4 chances to win, depending on how many blocks you've sent in.

Blocks are mailed to Valarie who will arrange the drawing at the end of the month. If you need her address, find her "ittlehelen" name on a previous lotto and send her (or me) a msg.

Whoopie! What a wonderful thing to read on New Year's Day......sort of auspicious, no? Thank you Cathie for passing on the good news. I had forgotten about the lotto over the last holiday week, so this took me quite by surprise when I checked in here just a few minutes ago. Thought to myself, oh...better check, and then see my name? Whooo. I'm thrilled because I particularly liked this month's choice of block. I am mid-way finished on a spider web block quilt now, hoping to get it done before an upcoming birthday for a gift. But, the next quilt I'd planned on doing was a sampler and I'd hoped to do all sorts of patterns in red, and colonial blue, and apple greens in solids and calicos against a cream background. I will be using the lotto blocks in this and they'll be really special to me. Most of them have had pics taken of them already, but not the last couple, so you bet I'll take a photograph of them when I get them, and share, and also when I get them incorporated into a quilt top. Mary you did not hurt my feelings one bit; I enjoy hearing your input. Thanks Kate, I like your idea of how I could make a block to send to the lotto with the lotto colors specified for that month and then make a block to keep each month just make it in separate colors that I would use in a sampler quilt just for me. I have never made a block with curves that was not applique, so if we do a curved block one month for the lotto if is a simple pattern then I would definitely like to try it as that is something I have not done before and think that would be a good learning curve. Also I have not done paper piecing, but would like to learn as DH wants me to do a paper piecing lighthouse quilt for him, so a paper piecing block one month I think I would like to try as well. Here is my question though when you paper piece do you use a bonding material like Steam-A-Seam2 to keep the fabric in place while you stitch it down with like applique hand stitch or is this something that is done with tucked under hidden seams? If we do a paper piecing block maybe Kate could give us some instructions on how to do it, cause I have no idea how to do it. I've tried to start participating in these block lottos more often, but I won't be able to this December. I'm way too busy trying to finish what I hope to make as Christmas gifts, and I doubt I'll have the time to commit to anything else for the next little while. At any rate, I don't to commit to it and then not be able to get it done :) So, I'm out for this month. Sorry!

I finally have these ready to go and in the interest of getting it all finished today I gave the list of participants to Linda and Val who are running the lotto for 2013. One set the list of names to numbers and the other picked the number. I assure you it was very fair. The winner is... LOISF!!!! Congrats Lois! I'll get your blocks in the mail on Wednesday. Ok, I goofed and bought black and a small print tan leaf. Can I just use the wrong side of the fabric, which is black?

I attempted to make one tonight. The first half went fine, I did the second row of triangles, but when I went to sew on the large triangle, it wouldn't fit. I sewed the second row of small triangles to the first and it fit fine. So I'll cut a larger one, sew it on, and then trim the whole square with my new 12.5 ruler! Hope to finish a couple more tomorrow and get them in the mail on Monday. No matter what, I am always down to the wire. And I had such hopes for this month. Actually, I think I'll just ship Novembers tomorrow and not hold that up with December's.

This is just a beautiful block, and the fabrics you chose shall make a dramatic quilt. Gonna see if I can work this in next month.

Lois, We'll just put an exclamation point on your head and play ring toss. lol I hope you can get to a retreat as I know you would enjoy it and the gals would connect with you just as easily as I did. :-) But, rest assured, they aren't as, um, crazy as I am.

I can't believe it, although the picture does look just like me. Thank you, everyone. The blocks are beautiful. I'm sorry I win so often. I promise I'll play a lot this year and not put my name in. (I really should play the Lottery, but who wants to win $600 million dollars?)

Congratulations, Bev. That's a great set of blocks. And don't worry about winning so often. Everyone has one chance per block. If you send in a lot of blocks, you should win more often. Good for you.
