Quotes too high...what to do?
Comments (32)I live in NC too, and with our cost of living you should be able to build a pretty nice house for 250,000 -- but I wouldn't expect you could build that first house for anywhere near that price. It's dripping in expensive add-ons. I find it overdone, but that's personal opinon. The second house is better, but it is still going to be overbudget. You're still looking at fancy ceilings, etc. I think it'll be cheaper than the first house, but still not within your budget. I think you have two options: 1. Increase the budget with some money of your own. 2. Find a new, more simple houseplan. If you start with one of these houses, and you start chopping off this and that item, you're going to lose the overall character that you were looking for in the first place....See MoreAre these quotes too high?
Comments (6)I would say that would be a tad high in my location for that size kitchen, but your location, the amount of detail in the doors, the amount of crown molding, the height of the cabinets, whether or not you are having glazing added---all of this has relevance on the quote. If they are doing a good quality job, with all of the VERY labor intensive prep that entails, then two quotes in the same ballpark would peg that as being the going rate in your market. Do double check their prep and painting process to be sure you are getting your money's worth. Really and truly assess the quality of your cabinets that you are investing that much money in. On average, you can get all brand new cabinets for just about twice that price, but they will have all modern construction and conveniences, not to mention the chance to tweak your layout to be more functional. Keeping what you have is certainly a greener choice, but it's not always the best choice. BTW, if you have some painting skills, then painting the cabinets yourself is certainly possible and you would save approximately 6K. Painting is mostly about labor and time. If you've got that, you save money. If you lack that, then you have to spend the money....See MoreInstallers destroyed my ovens. :(
Comments (35)I don't think you are getting the full story here. There aren't any ovens constructed out of such thin tinfoil that hauling them with a handcart will damage them. And if there are, then I wouldn't want them in my house anyway, as their mere weight in the cabinet would warp their bottoms. About 90% of all of the appliance installers that I've ever used have used appliance dolleys (hand trucks with a strap to secure the appliance) for ovens. No damage has ever resulted. Someone somewhere along the route dropped this oven during shipping, and then thought they could get away with selling it as a scratch and dent. Perhaps the salesman didn't fully inspect it underneath, and only found the exterior cosmetic damage. But I'd bet that the shipping department of the store knows the whole story here and had issues with filing with the carrier over this. If the carrier's insurance covered the claim, the oven would have been destroyed, and that serial number would have been recorded as such with the manufacturer. You are getting a load of manure here about the hand truck damage so that someone somewhere can finger point and even possibly scam. If this oven was supposed to be field destroyed due to an insurance claim, and it's been sold instead, that's a pretty big scam. And to blame it all on standard merchandise handling techniques is ca ca....See MoreSeems to be a problem installing 'wall oven' on counter...
Comments (3)OK, I'll try to help out. I found this photo so maybe this helps us visualize what you want? This isn't exactly what you want because it puts a microwave drawer under the single oven. But is this what you have in mind for the 27" oven but with more cabinet drawers below in place of the microwave drawer? This is a tall wall oven cabinet and I'll guess it is a semi-custom product not ready to assemble. Oven wall cabinets will usually be configured so that the oven sits on a reinforced shelf designed to take the weight. You also need to look at the rear clearances. Some ovens will not fit into a standard 24" deep cabinet or will need the electrical outlet to be put in a special place. Honestly, a tall wall cabinet designed for an oven will look better, will be designed to be safe, and might actually end up costing about the same unless you can find a very low cost handyman to do your modifications....See Moreneilaz
