In the IT world, that's know as the BSOD - Blue Screen of Death.

Your computer is about to die - likely the motherboard has issues, or your hard drive. You need to back up everything you want to save to some sort of external drive. Eventually, that message will show up, you'll power down, and it will not boot up.

It doesnt always mean your computer is going to die, but, that is a good possibility. Sometimes, it just means that something is out of whack. It can be hardware related, or software related, or registry related, or any number of things. I would back up everything though, just in case. Try last known good configuration option, before you gvve up on the computer. Do your back ups first though. Good Luck.

yes lots and lots of things cause a blue screen notice, does not mean it is going to die but does mean you need to correct the problem that is causing it to happen. You need to get all of the exact message that is on the blue screen write it down that is essential because there are dozens of blue screen messages and with out the one on your's no way to know what is causing it.
The other option is to go into the administrative tools section of control panel and then the event viewer and open each of the sections including system and look for any red or yellow flagged items double click on the entry and it will give you the info for what is causing the red flag, it will have a code number or event number write that down all of this stuff you have written down can then be googled to find out exactly what it relates to.
You have to get it all exactly as it is written down, google it, and there it will tell you if it is some of your software causing it or hardware or if you have a system problem etc.

It could be something simple. Something on my computer didn't like an antivirus program I tried using. It kept blue-screening until
I un-installed it. No further problems.

It could be a lot of things. You should be backing up critical data regularly anyway but if you haven't, do it. Shut off everything running in the background that can be shut off, disconnect from the internet and backup if needed.

Now before assuming the world is coming to an end, as said it can be a lot of things. More often than not it's a software conflict. Seldom is it a hardware issue. A driver issue is common too. Follow the instructions ravencajun gave. It's also possible it's a bad memory module or simply a parity error.

Have you installed software recently? Hardware? Are you doing your Windows Updates regularly? Have you changed drivers on something? Have you done a malware check? Scandisk? Defrag?

Ditto LindaKathy. I usually shoot the screen with my phone and send the photo to my IT nephew for him to worry about. And then I have a record of when and what the errors were.
