Backsplash ideas for white, modern kitchen?
I posted what became a quite exciting thread last fall on the kitchen in my new build modern cottage. Thought I should check in again for some more advice.
As a few of you advised, I'm pretty much going with the architect's vision, despite my prejudice against white kitchens. It is a fairly small galley kitchen with an island/peninsula open to the DR.
- White slab cabs (ICI paints "Quiet Hideaway");
- Richelieu "contemporary metal edge" pulls;
- Caesarstone Organic white counters, waterfall at edge of peninsula
- Blanco Quatrus SS undermount sink
- The DR side of the peninsula will have open shelves in the same wood as the floors and some of the walls: PurParket Rustic Bisque white oak
I've never paid a much attention to white kitchens, so have no idea on backsplash. Do I just do a short ledge in the caesarstone? Or introduce some (very) subtle colour and texture? Would appreciate your views.
Here are a few pictures from early April. Some good progress since then, plus lots of leaves on the trees now. The brutal winter really delayed us. Should be roughly habitable by July 20th, not really fully finished until fall. I'll post some new pics soon with siding up.

Comments (25)didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Comments (16)I'm with Daisychain - just say no to 3 stones in one kitchen. Alaska White is a beautiful granite. It will be the star. Both of the backsplash tiles you pictured would be wrong. The one on the right because it is busy, and also a dated look. The one on the left cause it would be stone #3 in your kitchen, and because its veining going in different directions with each tile will not go with your granite. I recommend a quiet cream subway backsplash. Not only will go, but also is a classic. Not everything in your kitchen needs to be splashy and statement-y. The first one while unique I think over time you will tire of and you are set to one style and one look as opposed to the more neutral 2nd choice. Interesting choices. Comments (7)I am also looking for backsplash for White Springs granite. While I know that the very nature of natural stone is that it varies, it is hard for me to believe this is White Springs unless the picture is bad. I thought it was typical for that granite to have less black and hints of burgundy. In mine, the mica has a nice taupe color and I plan to go that direction. I agree that it is a showpiece granite, and that you therefore want to go super simple with the backsplash. My leading candidate at the moment is Daltile Retrospace in Sycamore Tan which is very taupe. My slab is much more colorful than yours appears here. Elemental Tan is more brown and matches my slab well, but we are doing all wood cabinets, and I thought the contrast with the wood was too low. But you might like it because it’s a warm tan but still simple and neutral, especially if the backsplash will be against the white cabinets and you are already playing with brown in the middle with the island stain. The granite in my experience could handle 2 shades of brown if not right next to each other. But I doubt it would work with the paint colors you mentioned. Though to be honest, I don’t know how warm those whites and grays are. Also not sure how warm or colorful you want to go. If you like Sycamore Tan, I would check your gray to be sure. If you like Elemental Tan, maybe look at SW Bagel or something like it. Artisan Tan is a darker, leans burgundy one, but definitely a more dramatic look....See Morenosoccermom

9 years agoRockybird, my walnut kitchen at home still has no backsplash, it's been finished for four years! You can see why I'm asking for help.
I will ask DH to take a few more pics tomorrow. They just started with the siding, so it will be more interesting in a couple of weeks.

9 years agoHow about Fireclay's claymonde, large format ceramic tile? Either same size or collection of sizes in same color?
I ordered a sample in white (5x30?) and really liked it (but haven't gotten around to that project).

9 years agoI'd go with a backpainted glass backsplash in a favorite subtle color. It's clean looking and easy maintenance.
Personally, I'd pick a light or seafoam blue/green.
