One month to go - tons of new pics
Comments (13)Overall it was pretty quick. We bought the land in May of '04. Engaged with an architect in June and had plans in late October. Built the driveway from July - October. Foundation was poured in late November and framing started in January. We moved in @ the end of July. We have found that building here is not much cheaper than California where we came from. The big difference is the cost of land. Materials are just as expensive. Labor is a might be a bit cheaper overall but not significantly since Vermont doesn't have a big undocumented workforce that exists in California. In the end you get what you pay for. We could have skimped and spent less than what we are getting but ours is completely custom with top quality materials and building practices so it will last and be comfy in the Vermont winters. We also have spent A LOT on the site work given we are off the road and up on a rocky ledge. For building of the house (not including the road, site work and landscaping) we spent about $600K + built-ins and allowances. We have a lot of extra built-ins and details like porches, lofts, basement, radiant heat, generator, etc. that are great but added to the overall cost. BTW - this doesn't include the barn/garage space. Hope that helps. M...See MoreCave pic, overlooks screened in porch
Comments (6)Is this all rock, or earthen? I'm probably influenced by a novel I read recently -- think the title was "Impulse". It concerned the mysterious disappearance of four boys from their boarding school. The story revealed that five boys discovered an earthen cave more than a mile from their school and used it as their hangout. One afternoon all five were in the cave when one had to leave for a class. He stood on top of the cave and impulsively jumped up and down, thinking to scare his pals -- bringing down tons of dirt and sealing the cave with his friends inside. There was nothing he could do to save them. He said nothing for 20 years, hence the mystery. The book taught a lesson about impulsive behavior, and also about the inability of most people to glimpse and and mentally grasp a group beyond four. Witnesses had seen 'four' boys enter the woods. Sorry to seem an old worry-wart....See MoreFinally, pics of our completed beach house -- pic heavy!
Comments (46)Thanks for letting me know those are Flor tiles, Sue! Even better! They would likely work better than the rug I have in my kitchen because the ends of the rug are bulky and get in the way of the trash compactor opening. I have been having a hard time finding the right long rug for the hallway that will run from our front door to the mudroom, too. I will have to keep an eye out for good deals on flor tiles while we do that part of our remodel. I have been really enjoying the home decor forum here now that our kitchen is mostly done, and we will be starting on the rest of the house this spring. We just got cafe curtains hung in the kitchen and dining room today, so it was nice to see your curtains, too. Just enough for privacy, but still lets the light in......See MoreFinished Mahogany Kitchen - tons o pics!
Comments (32)Hi Chris - My husband is a landscape architect by profession, but cabinetmaking is his hobby. He's also designed, built and installed a cherry library in our house, so this is his second really big project. The backsplash is Dune Emphasis Glass Mosaics "Trencadis Diabolo" color. The grout is Nutmeg, I believe. We're still struggling with the grout color - we had thought it was going to dry a rich caramel color, similar to some of the highlighting in the cabinet wood, but instead it dried that chalky grey brown color - there may be some additional adjustments to that color to get it closer to what we originally wanted. It is still pretty cool as is - depending on the light, it can look like textured copper, or even reptile skin. The photos don't entirely capture the real life look. We got it from Fast Floors dot com, where the price was about one fifth of stores in our area - win! Can't wait to see pics as your kitchen is finished! Tired Here is a link that might be useful: Trencadis Diabolo...See Moredeeinohio
