Having Surgery Today-Wish Me luck!

I've been getting kidney dialysis for nearly a year.It's awful but I put up with it. Three times a week I get two needles stuck in my arm and have to lie perfectly still for three hours. I don't like it but I neeg it to stay alive. Everythinhg was okay till yesterday when they said "There's a blockage in your arm. You need to get this taken care of right away" well, I made the appointmrent and will have surgery on my arm today at one o'clock. It's either a narrowing of the Blood vessel or a clot. Wish me luck! I am Soooo Nervous. It's supposed to hurt and I'll be awake for the whole procedure. I'll report back when it's over. Thanks for your prayers! I know you guys will help me out here!

I was done with port removal and ready to go home by 1pm AZ time (that is 3 hours behind the East coast daylight savings, 2 hours behind the Midwest, 1 hour behind Mountain dalight savings time and matching CA daylight savings time. I have decided against going for an interview for a 3 month job. If it was a permanent job or a 1 year contract I would jump at that in a nanosecond. So I can go back to work tomorrow as usual. I have to keep the outer bandage on until Sat about noon and then let jeri strips fall off on their own. The surgeon used the same incison so I will only have 1 scar and not two. The nurses could not use my inner elbows for the IV. They did however use ultra sound on each arm to locate veins. That was cool. My left arm has a vein but there is a valve in there which will not allow the needle to advance. This nurse tried anyway. Boy, did that hurt. So for IV the nurse accessed the port, the very one they would be removing. This time I was awake the whole tome. Last time when they put it in I know I had been asleep. Then the doctor had to inject a local anethesia into the skin around the port. That also really hurt. Luckily, I did not feelthe cutting part. I almost prefer being asleep - that way you do not have to hear the things they talk about or hear the sounds or feel any pulling. Thanks everyone!!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and prayers. It must have helped because everything went well. The only hitch was the surgeon was running an hour late, but the surgery was quick. It was scheduled for 6PM but didn't start till 7PM. DH barely had time to get home to make dinner for him and DS, also Elvira the dog, then eat before turning around and picking me up. I am stone free for now. I go in to see him 2 weeks to get more information on prevention, diet and medicine. Thanks for your well wishes. Clare

Prostate is three times normal size, on original visit cancer doc couldn't reach the far end of it with his finger, which I think he found a bit unusual. So they say that those beads? pearls? of radioactive stuff aren't useful in such a situation: a problem of too large proportions, it seems. Some time ago some guys were complaining about being unenthused about the doc sticking his/(her?) finger up their rear end ... ... and I said that they thought that they had a problem ... how would they like to be the doc? They hadn't thought of that! Sometimes helpful to put yourself into someone else's shoes (rubber gloves?). Hypothetically, that is. I wondered about telling this story here this afternoon, as I didn't want to appear to be dragging this message back to the top, unnecessarily ... ... but there were some issues to deal with, apart from that ... ... so here's the story. As I was taking son home from the cancer centre to his place, as we approached a signal light on the main street in our city, going with the green, a slim young lady stepped off of the curb on the left on the far side, texting as she walked. I slowed some, but as she approached the middle of the street, she stopped ... ... then, as we were closer, began walking again ... ... and I was on the brakes. Then she decided that it would be a good idea to stop. Don't know whether she saw us ... or heard my leaky/noisy muffler, too close for comfort. I'll have to tell the garage, where they told me last year that the muffler wasn't in good shape ... but that I didn't need to worry about it asphyxiating me. Maybe it helped a young lady avoid a skinned shin? (There's a $400.00 fine, recently imposed, for distracted driving: they say that it's causing more fatalities than the drunks, lately). Maybe I should have pulled over and gone back to ask her whether she knew how to get tire tracks across her legs? ole joyfuelled

Sending a hug and a prayer to you. It will be okay. I've had multiple vascular surgery, and while it's no picnic, the surgeons know what they are doing. Is it going to be like angioplasty? Oh, you are probably at the hospital and can't answer this. Best of luck, and remember, "this too shall pass".

Oh, that's terrible - can't they put in a port for your dialysis? Joseph's bio-mom had a port for hers - located in her abdomen.

Jannie, you may be having your surgery as I type this. In a situation like this my prayers are with the doctors and nurses, because they are doing the work and must at times use their best judgement.

I have a good friend on dialysis who has had similar surgery and it is all good now. My dear niece who has been on dialysis for three years had to have a defibrillator (?) put in 3 days ago. I called the day after and she answered the phone and was doing great.

You will be great also. Just do as you are told!

It's all over (for now). They gave me iv sedation, stuck a catheter in my arm and went to work. Found a narrowing around my shoulder, got it fixed to 9 centimeters but found a clot so they stopped, patched me up and sent me home. They'll go back in next Thursday, get out the clot, and restretch the opening to 12 cm. Well, I'm comfortable and it's all okay to resume regular dialysis tomorrow. Yes, it's very similar to angioplasty, which my husband had on his heart afew years ago. Thanks everyone for your good wishes and prayers! I love everyone on Kitchen Table. You all are the greatest!

I'm glad to hear it's done for today, but sorry to hear you have to have another procedure next week. Thanks so much for updating us. I've been checking in to see if you'd feel up to letting us know.

Jannie-read our thread about surgery.Tell me about it.A few of my nurses are saying things that leads me to believe Im heading same direction.How did you know ,did it not buzz?My one nurse said its narrow at one end another said she thinks its time for fistula gram.I figured I was safe,no if it dont work they go in other arm,leg...did it hurt?did yor arm get pain in it from time to time, mine is.
My thumb hurts alot they say it could be from fistula.My arm is still dead from when they put fistula in.I have no feeling underneath fore arm.GL
