Son's wonderful news!

My stepson received a letter from Baylor Univeristy yesterday - he has received full academic scholarships for ALL FOUR YEARS!

This means SO much to him, since his father (who died in April, 2007) told him if he worked hard, he could do this.

Now, his college fund can be used to start a business, after he graduates, or further his education. We are SO excited and thrilled and happy for him!!! Of course, he is so humble about it - walking around in a fog, trying to digest the value of his hard work and this payoff! LOL

I can totally see why your new dil would go this route. I'm extremely shy and had a tiny wedding. It freaked me out walking down the isle in my big poofy dress. lol. Would never have had a big expensive wedding, couldn't afford it but that never appealed to me anyway. All that money spent for one day and most of those marriages don't last. If and when Lauren gets married, I think she will either pick a dark purple, black or red dress to walk down the isle...or something with polka dots. She's obsessed with polka dots. She also loves old fashioned dresses, from the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. If she even has a real wedding at all....

I would never want that many children myself but I have great respect for this family. The children are taught responsibility and family love and that is what is missing in so many homes today. I see nothing wrong with the older ones taking care of the younger ones. Both of my parents came from large families and this technique was used. The siblings grew up close and I have never heard of any resentment expressed by any of my aunts or uncles. In fact, the memories they told intriqued me and made me realize that they had their priorties in order. They did not need or have the frills of today but what they did have, they appreciated and respected. Older children taking care of younger siblings---isn't that how it used to be done years ago and somewhere along the line, families started giving children less and less responsibility. And today, many people do not know how to take care of themselves much less anyone else. I don't think the mother is very often given the credit that she deserves. She homeschools those kids so her time is not just sitting around on her butt while the older children babysit. It also said on one of the programs that the mother exclusively takes care of the baby for several months while baby is still breast feeding. And, it also mentioned that Jennifer, the next to the baby, was just moved from the parents bedroom to the girls room. I just think that the parents are not always given a fair shake and NO, I do not want that many children but this family is not relying on the system to take care of these children so more power to them. The Duggars have income other than the reality show and to me, I have no problem with them earning extra money with the show. I find the values and beliefs they express is a wonderful example when so many families today are dysfunctional.

I'm so happy for you both, Kat! It does seem our world dings the shyer and quieter among us, doesn't it? I have two shy kids and the other one has a much easier time with job interviews, etc. Getting the first job under his belt gave Ryan a good stepping stone, along with the experience of dealing with people. If I have to interview for another job one day, I'm going to have a verrrrrry hard time. I'll bet the Seattle job was a foregone conclusion and that they already had someone else nearly hired (inside the company,) before Ryan even went into the room. Sounds like they were just going through the motions and that was maybe why they couldn't look him in the eye. We had to pay dd's Cobra for a year (before the age limit was raised,) and that was also a lot of money--I feel your pain on that one.

Emotionally it could be, like FD says, that she has always wanted MORE of a relationship, so I'd ask BF if he thinks that's the case. Has she been pining away for him during the past two years? How long have you and BF been together? I have to ask: were you dating BF when he had this one-night stand with her? Was she hoping he'd dump you for her? (I highly doubt this last scenario is how it went, but if so it would shed light and wouldn't say much good for her motivations.) As for financial, she may be worried that he will stop helping with expenses when there is someone else in the picture (you), which will of course change in some ways but not entirely. In all reality, whether BF is with you or not, he is still going to be obligated to pay child support and to help out financially with SOME of his son's expenses on top of it, which BF will help with unless he is a deadbeat. He should reassure her that he will always do his part to make sure their son is adequately and FAIRLY provided for, and hopefully this will allay some of her fears. While I hope the days of buying her big-ticket items and paying her debts are over, if it is an expense that is directly relevant to the welfare of their child (and heck, a car is arguably one of those expenses if it is her only car)*** then he is likely to continue to contribute *something* in certain cases. His contributions will at least continue to be a very delicate and controversial issue between all of you, whether money is actually paid out or not, and that alone is worth considering. Remember, $ is the top reason relationships end so it's always going to SOMEHOW be an issue, especially in blended families. And depending on where you live (b/c I think it varies but someone correct me if I'm wrong), if you have additional kids with him, the CS will not necessarily reduce because of that. And every year kids are alive, they get more expensive. So I don't see the financial outlook changing that much in dollars and cents, except for getting, all around, more expensive. In a wierd way, just being aware of that should make all of you more at ease with the ievitability of the situation. It is an issue everyone has to accept regardless. As for how much control she has over how much you are around and whether or not BF marries you, she just doesn't have that control. If she did, it would be called a "relationship" they are in, which they are not. It might be rough on her emotionally, and I think it's wonderful that you have the empathy for her situation and I agree that kindness doesn't hurt anything, but at the end of the day she can't control or prevent the relationship between you and BF. I would do what you've already thought about, making sure father & son get some alone time, and I would not push myself onto the scene with her until she is ready. It is very sad and difficult, but hopefully she will ---like all of us have had to at some point in our lives--- go on to recover from the breakup and be happy with or without another guy (but of course without your BF!) [***= I am no expert on child support and how most courts/agreements view custodial parent's cars as a child-rearing expense, so somebody with more experience in this area than me should speak up about that]

Wow!! What wonderful news...now there is a future leader of this country. Sometimes when I see the young people coming up I wonder what will become of the future, mine (being 62 and almost ready to retire), and their's for that matter. But when I hear about someone like this, well it makes me feel so much better, and very proud!

Cool! a bit of advice on the college fund thou...do not spend any of it till you find out what the other expenses are going to be. my DH who is working on a specialized BS/MS honors engineering program spends more on textbooks than on his full-time tuition each semester, it's a racquet....tuition is actually our cheapest college expense :-/ and my DH is an adult (obviously LOL) w/ a perfect GPA and can only qualify for nomimal scholarships. but a scholarship is very cool and even more so for him! nice to hear there are good kids really needing the $$ getting it too :-) congrats!! ~ liz

full ride? baylor? i'd be on cloud nine!

i do have to agree, be cautious, and keep funds aside...often that means a dorm and only 2 meals a day...or one main meal...then the extras the kids always seem to want...(and find how easy it is to get a credit card...won't go into that mess!)

Congratulations to you both! I have to agree with a couple of posters who said to be cautious with college fund, as a scholarship pays for definite costs. My DGD got a full ride for her doctorate, but the expenses other than the basics are pretty stiff.

The scholarship coverages are layed out quite clearly - yes, basic housing and academic needs ONLY - the rest will be provided by someone else (his college fund and me) and a part time job after his freshman year.

Your kind words and advise are VERY much appreciated. My middle son did all of his funding on his own, so I have no experience in how this works.

I will show Joseph your congrats notes - he will be so pleased! Joseph reminds me a bit of Barney Fife, in that he is VERY humble and shy - he just hangs his head and grins - give him a wheat straw and call him "John Boy"!!! LOL

That's great!

I'd check to see if he can qualify for other scholarships too. If I've remember correctly, both of your son's biological parents are deceased. He may qualify for additional scholarships or funding based on that. He may need to go down to the financial aid offce to look through the books in person and also talk to someone who would be willing to help him. I was told my college had that type of fund. Baylor may have one also.

Baylor is a great college. That is wonderful news. My Daughter got Scholarships for her 4 years also. What a relief.

That's wonderful. Most kids need money from parents or loans with occasional scholarships. Your son has basically earned his own college education through his hard work. You can be so proud.

Adellabedella, THANKS and yes - we applied two months ago for scholarships/funding for orphaned college students. We should be hearing back any time now.
