'We're' pregnant!

Having trouble with my modem, so will just see if I can get a picture posted. My friend, Jodie, and I penned up one of the pregnant jennies, because we want to feed her so her baby will have some milk and not die. We won't be returning her to the herd...ever. Jodie is finally due to talk to the man who owns the donkeys tomorrow. We haven't named this jenny because Jodie thought it was the one she calls "Isaiah's Mom", but I don't think it is. She was calling her Mommita.

Lucky continues to do well. He is still at the donkey barn, but kept in a stall with a small turn out...and he won't be going back in the pasture there either. I would like to go ahead and bring the others home when I bring him.

Awww, she looks so scruffy and pitiful. I hope all will turn out fine with the baby, and so glad to read good news about Lucky.

I'm sure you will enjoy your 3rd year garden. It's sort of special to watch things really take off. The next year or so you can spend more time with baby & just do some "editing" - splitting, rearranging, & adding or replacing a plant here and there. That is if the gardening bug doesn't get you & you decide to expand! As for your question, I cut down some things, especially messy or floppy plants, & do quite a bit of pruning throughout the season to keep things neat in my very crowded gardens. I try to give everything its time to shine. However, I wait until spring to cut down the foliage of most plants. I think it gives the plants some protection and helps hold the meager snow we have been getting in recent years here. It can also be somewhat more attractive over our long dreary cold season, especially if you edit around areas of winter interest & any special views from inside the house, aiming for interest, not clutter.

I would also like to point out how infant and early childhood mortality also plays into the factor. Infant and early childhood mortality dropped dramatically with the advent of refrigeration (both ice boxes and gas-/electric-powered refrigerators) and it was the advent of safer food. Where a healthy adult would usually recover from tainted food, an infant/young child would easily die from dehydration from. I'm sure this has improved the overall numbers over the years. With fewer young children dying from food poisoning, and more of them growing to be adults, this could be a huge factor in the "average" life span. Other common causes of death for children were pneumonia, influenza, cancer, and birth defects, and for the most part, now successfully treated thanks to advances in medicine. The last infant I can personally recall dying was that of an acquaintance about 20-years ago who became a vegan while pregnant with twins. One of the twins did not thrive, and soon after birth died of malnutrition due to the mother's diet and lack of consuming quality protein while she was pregnant, and she wasn't able to supply enough breast milk for both babies. When we lived in a predominately agrarian society, young children often died from unintentional farm-related injuries. So once again, as we moved from the country to the cities, and there were fewer families needed to feed the nation, and more needed in the cities due to the industrial age, there were more children becoming adults than ever before. I was watching a news program the other day, when the talking head clearly said, "he has a tough road to hoe." I think hoeing any road would be pretty darned tough. The expression is clearly supposed to be "a tough row to hoe," yet I constantly hear people say it as road.

She's definitely a "wide load," poor thing! How kind of you to pen her so she will not be stressed by others and can eat well. I know you'll have a healthy babe soon. What are baby donkeys called--foals, colts? Thank you, Marilyn.

I sooooo hope your friend talks "sooner than later" with that man and that you can take as many of those animals out of there as possible. The deplorable conditions under which those poor creatures are living just breaks my heart. Let us know when you become a grandma.

Jodie has called him every day, and couldn't get him to call her back. He is coming over to her house tomorrow to help her put in some air conditioners so she will finally be able to talk to him then.

I have no idea when she is due...but I'd say, probably within a week. Her udder was a little fuller this morning. When we penned her up a couple of days ago, it was as thin and soft as a deflated balloon. Yesterday it had a little bit of "substance" to it, and today it is definitely showing some changes. I've raised probably 60 or 70 horse foals and the mares will start "bagging" a few weeks in advance...often showing some signs as long as six weeks prior to foaling.

I guess donkey babies are called foals...jennys and jacks...females and males, or perhaps, more correctly jennets.

I have found six people so far who are willing to adopt a donkey, but I haven't tried very hard because I don't know yet how the owner is going to take this.

There are two little jennies...Dolly and one I call Bug, and a little jack that I named Sasquatch, and I really would like to get them out of there. I haven't seen Dolly in about a week though...so I hope she is okay. She was in better condition than most of them, so maybe she is just back in the pasture. It's a big pasture...over 100 acres.
