Here are a few things you will need for the class in Jan. for those who want to get their supplies early. I will add to this if I think of anything else.

freezer paper

fine tip sharpie marker

pencil

appliquÃ© needles

fabric and matching thread

1/2 or 3/4 inch pins

sharp, small scissors

Roxanne's glue or you can make your own by using Elmer's school glue and watering it down.

optional but nice to have:

Thread Heaven or another beeswax. I recommend thread heaven because it isn't too heavy. I think it is about 3 or 4 dollars.

I will try to elaborate on the fabric you will need soon. I will post a follow up with the sizes, etc.

Jen, I'm also looking forward to this class. A Dresden Plate block is in my future so I'll need to know the proper way to applique it to the background.

Will you be giving us a pattern to use or do we supply our own?

Jean, Are the windows square or are they crooked with points? Like on Strolling the Block? Once we figure that out we can decide the best way to do this.... I just bought a book that is AWESOME for applique! It is called Baltimore Elegance, and it has patterns to do a Baltimore album quilt. But it has 6 lessons that teach you applique including reverse, back basting and all sorts of stuff I don't know how to do. The beginning has the best explanations of needleturn and prepared applique I have ever seen!

She really stressed that good enough isn't really good enough. That paying attention to the size of your stitches - as tiny as you can make them and as evenly as you can space them - is worth the effort. She showed me several areas where you couldn't see my stitches at all on the front of the piece and then places where you could see stitches. It makes a difference in how smooth the piece looks and, again, she stressed that it's worth the effort to make that happen. I'm not sure I can achieve her level because my eyes aren't that great anymore. Some of what she saw quickly I had to squint to see, but she was right and I'm going to give it a try. I'll see how consistent I can be on the next one. But I think that between sewing, watching tv, talking to DH, petting cats on my lap and sipping on my hot tea, I may always have a few stitches that are visible. LOL I can do much better than I did and each month I should improve more; some of the family distractions are things I like though and so I'll have to work around them.

Donna, Thanks for posting your celtic project. It looks tedious, but I've wanted to try it. Think I'll put it on my Wallhanging Challenge list. When I get to it, I'll probably be picking your brain for any tips. Great job on the sweater and getting the BD blocks together. Definitely an excellent month for you! Linda, You've been busy, too! Machine quilting takes a lot of time, but you're fortunate to have a frame and know how to use it! Good job! I completed a few more things on my list but got a call from my SIL. She and a friend were cleaning out the sewing supplies of what a family had left of a neighbor who had passed away. Not much cotton, but there were 3 big cheater quilts and 2 GFG quilts that just need to be trimmed up. She wasn't a quilter, so there wasn't a lot of that, but nevertheless, the back of the van got filled, so now I have to go through it to see what I'm going to keep of it. Thanks for the comments. As for pattern choices... my goodness they're difficult! One pp that I chose that I thought would be simple, turned out to be a nightmare to make (my apologies!). I would love to choose more complex/adult/mature patterns, but I worry about whether they would scare away beginner level quilters. Another problem I'm running into is that there are a lot fewer non-juvenile themed patterns in pp that are on free sites. And many of the applique patterns seem awfully time consuming for a lotto, though I love them.... such as floral wreath patterns. The last couple of lottos, I've tried having pp and applique in the same month so that quilters who enjoy one technique, but not the other, don't need to sit out a cycle. And it's very difficult finding TWO patterns, one pp & one applique (in the same or similar sizes) that will go together in the same project. I'll try a couple of more lotto cycles, but would definitely welcome suggestions of pattern/fabric combinations that fit the criteria I'm trying to meet each month. Thanks, Kay

A Dresden plate is in my future as well, and I hope I'll be able to do it justice. This class will be perfect timing, and I'll be looking forward to it. What is the difference between an applique needle and a regular needle?

I am sorry that I didn't catch your post earlier. An applique needle is just a tiny needle. Usually used sizes are 10 or 12. Some people also prefer milliner's needles.

Ok, Jen.....it's almost January. @:) I've been playing around with applique and have found that a long thin beading needle works good for me and my fingers. Couldn't find any that actually said applique, milliner or straw so went with what I could find.

Do we use regular thread or actual quilting thread?

I'd like to get a case, or something to put everything in. Open it up and, voila, there everything is in plain sight!

Oh, I am excited about this class too...can hardly wait to start. I have been trying out (I think every method there is) and am now having some success with a post Maryliz pulled up using freezer paper on top and a glue stick. It doesn't take much to get me excited and I want to applique everything LOL.

Sharon, I have a portable travel kit. It's a small plastic container that holds thread, thimble, embrodery scissors, needles, a tiny strawberry for pins. I put 2 magnets on the lid, one inside and one outside. This catches and holds pins and needles and are easy to find.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes - I've recently appliqued a piece using the freezer paper template and starch method and am interested in alternatives - especially for internal corners - I did at one time see a video on the Austin blocks ladder stitch method which looked very neat - I wish I could do this or see the video again but you know how QNNTV has gone 'subscription'!
Heres hoping this tutorial helps when I'm doing the applique blocks in the SBS quilt I've started
