knee replacement??

Good Morning --

Due to him being hard of hearing, I am accompanying my father to an initial consultation with an orthopedist regarding knee pain. My Dad is 79 years old, so it is likely caused by arthritis. He previously had an evaluation by a different doctor (I was not present) earlier this spring who did not think my Dad was a candidate for Knee-Replacement surgery just yet.

Those of you who have experience with this, can you suggest any questions that are important for us to ask?

My first question for the doctor is: Could the pain be caused by something other than arthritis? His pain is tolerable other than when he is swimming at which point it becomes unbearable. I've heard that swimming is supposed to be a gentle exercise that arthritic sufferers can do somewhat comfortably. This is not the case with him (which is why I wonder if something else can be causing his pain).

Any other information / questions-for-doc that you can share would be most appreciated.

Thanks for reading --

~Maura
