Brody's 2 month appt is today--?'s

Brody has his 2 month check up today and I've been so worried about this appointment. He is not yet smiling, and still doesn't look at us. He doesn't track objects yet, not cooing, or responding to voices or looking at toys we have for him (like those things you put on the carseat handle). His gas issues are much better and he is not colicky (thank goodness). He is also not eliminating (#2) more than once every 3 days or so. He seems to have an oily-looking film on his eyes.

I've mentioned this stuff in past appointments, but he was so young, they said to wait and see. He has not reached any of the general milestones that a 2 month old should by now.

He was only 3 weeks early--born exactly at 37 weeks--so I wonder if that would slow his developmental milestone acheivements? Also, I'm really hoping that he's at least 10 pounds by now!

Any insight, advice, or past experiences you could share would be so helpful. I have the appointment today at 4 pm (EST)

Everything you've described other than the oily-looking film on the eyes sounds like my 2nd grandson, who is now 2 1/2. We thought he would NEVER smile and he seemed to not look at us when he was that age. I can tell you he's a very normal, healthy little 2 year old, so hopefully Brody is just still trying to play catch up.

Please let us know how his appointment goes.

Ah yes, welcome to motherhood! You'll worry about everything, especially that first year or two before they can start communicating a bit.

I can't tell you if something is wrong or not but I was looking at your website and I thought Brody looked alert and engaged in the pictures. The lack of pooping could be from the soy formula.

I wouldn't worry too much about milestones at this point. Keep an eye on things but don't assume that something is wrong. Each baby has his or her own pace.

Update on 3 of my chrysalises! 3 eclosed yesterday after approx 4 weeks - amazing experience and so beautiful! Sad news though that one fell from the spot it was holding onto (it was a little windy) right after eclosing. It was crawling in the soil so I put a stick down and it climbed up and I hung it from a nearby plant with a clothespin. The wings plumped up for awhile but never fully finished. I found it this morning dead. So very sad that it made it thru almost to the end to die. Butterfly raising, although so exciting, can be stressful. I understand why people raise them indoors and then release them!

OK, you guys are awesome. I couldn't even read the posts until now because I would start to cry again. Isn't that silly? I usually have more perspective than this. I think my extended family (parents, siblings, etc.) has been more upset over how long this has taken than me. They seem to get mad at me that I haven't gotten madder before now, it has been driving them crazy and they don't even live here. :) But that is why I feel guilty about it. My job usually gives me perspective. I tear up a little sometimes when I am sitting with a dying patient, when I am hugging the family after pronouncing a patient that has just died and telling them their loved one is really gone, or talking to someone that just received a very grave diagnosis. I try to wait until the ride home to cry when I loose a patient I have come to know over weeks, months, or even years. But I don't usually cry over kitchens. My awesome brother who helps everyone, used to go to get a Christmas tree with me every year and bring a gas powered chain saw to cut it down. One year while I was looking for the "perfect" tree, he cut down Christmas trees for all the elderly and single women trying to do it themselves that he could find. When I called to him that I had it, "the" tree, he pulled the chain and pulled the chain. He was out of gas! He borrowed a hand saw and cut MY tree down by hand. But he still went back with me the next year. :) So when I needed a tree in my front yard cut down, he offered to do it. That day he said, you know I am going to do my best, but I usually only do my own because there is no gaurantee this tree won't land on your house. My brother rarely does less than a good job on anything, but darn it, didn't that tree land on the house. I stood and couldn't do anything becuase I was laughing so hard. When I could talk again I said, well you get what you pay for sometimes! Anyway, the moral of my story is that despite having good intentions and a good heart and doing your best, sometimes s**t happens. No matter how hard you try, no one promises life will be easy or fair. Besides, while I have been doing a "budget" remodel of the kitchen and livingroom for 20,000.00, many people can't afford to remodel at all, or are trying to do on much less, so I am actually pretty fortunate. You all have made me feel so much better! I am not used to being the one getting the hugs and support, I usually give them and I do so appreciate it. Now I need to suck it up and I will take a trip out to buy a great big umbrella to go over my patio table so I can enjoy the heat wave that is supposed to come later this week and get out of this darned mess! I just wish I felt happier about going out to do it. Maybe I will when I see out there and sit down under it to have lunch. Sue

It's been awhile since my 4 were this little, but I still remember. First... I disagree about putting cereal into the bottle... it's not recommended anymore. You can mix some in a bowl and spoon feed but it's really not suggested until 6 months. Possibly he's getting too much iron in his formula and that might be the cause of constipation. I would suggest trying a lower iron formula and see if that helps and if you're breast feeding, possibly it's what you're eating that is causing him trouble. If you still notice a problem with constipation, my doctor always had me take a very small piece of soap and rolling it into a half tootsie roll shape. Then you place it just inside his anus and for some reason this really works... don't leave it there, of course, but when ever I did it they pooped right away. As far as bedtime changes... you just started a new job- you're more stressed and babies pick that up. Try to get yourself relaxed and make a structured bedtime schedule that is the same daily. If he continues to wake up, there isn't much you can do other than go with it and it is ok to let him cry a bit. For diapers- go up a size. Finally- try not to sweat the not rolling over. Kids do stuff at their own rate and it doens't mean they're slow or anything like that. I know in the first year there are so many landmarks they're supposed to match and it makes for more stress for the parents. Just enjoy him, go with your gut and realize that he's more resilient than you think.

Carol- better fragrance LEH or BG?? Sheesh. I don’t know. They both smell great. It’s still early on for our plants, but I think I’d personally go with Blue Girl. Today. LOL That could totally change tomorrow! ;-) OTOH LEH has LOTS more buds and blooms than Blue Girl, so on the whole is more fragrant. I also like the foliage on LEH better. Blue Girl opened some more today and it is a lovely bloom. I tend to like more of the cupped/rounded blooms, things like LEH, but BG makes my heart happy. I’ll take another picture of it when I get home today (I’m checking in on the grand dogs right now). Kristine- I’m so with you on the rodents. They are awful and have cost us a LOT of $$ and aggravation the last few years. And then they start eating our roses? Grrrr. Although I’d never get Al to move to Canada. He had to travel there for work for a few days last month. Was NOT pleased to see snow on the ground still. Total Florida boy. LOL oh!! Our Florentina is blooming. Eeeee! Knock me over with a feather. I had told Al we wouldn’t have any blooms this year either. He went and looked close at it a few weeks ago and said “oh Shan! guess whaaaaat?!”. We had moved it out of the whiskey barrel it was in last year to a spot it apparently reeeeally likes on the fence. It’s been growing like crazy, but I was so surprised by buds. We only got it from Heirloom spring 2017. I’ll get a picture of it too. It’s such a fantastic honest to goodness real red red. Can’t wait to smell it too. :-)

Bearcat please don't worry...Brody sounds exactly like my 6 month old grandson. At 2 months he was doing exactly how you describe Brody. He was 2 weeks early and weighed in at 6.4oz. He is now engaged, smiling, "talking", and even though he is not as heavy as the doctor would like (my daughter is going to feed him 3 meals a day now, plus he is breast-feeding)...he is ahead of the curve on everything else! Please try not to worry...and keep us updated on how the appointment went. This is my first grandchild and my daughter has gone through the same things that you are going through. Breathe and try to relax, it only gets better!

Hi all, they just called and moved my appointment up to 11:30 am this morning--1 hour from now. I'll be sure to ask my questions and post how things went! Thanks so much again. Also, in all of Brody's pictures he is always looking left with either his eyes or head. We have noticed that at home from day one.

I agree not to worry until told to.

My oldest son was born at 36.4 weeks. He weighed 5lb 7.5oz at birth and was an apgar of 2! (not good) The only thing we think he suffered in is his growth spurts..he seems to always be behind on them, even now at 16. However, he is now 5' 10", wears a size 11.5 shoe and is just over 200lbs. He's due for one more large growth spurt..but it's slow coming. (I know you are thinking..does he need to grow anymore? lol..but yes..we think he'll top out at about 6'1".

Beartcat, don't borrow trouble, as my grandmother used to say. All babies develop differently. Both my kids were late walkers, well over a year old, and neither one talked for the longest time either. Both grew up just fine, and I found out yrs. ago that I also walked late.
