It's a cool idea. But I have embraced my old radiators- all are nekkid. I think they look less there. IMHO.

It definitely works, I love to see a person tap in to their creative source and find a solution.

I like it and think it will look even better with the brackets added.

I agree with Cooperbailey. In a way, the shelf calls more attention to the radiator. The radiator is not hidden; you still know it's there, & it becomes apparent that you want to hide it and don't like it.

I used to really dislike radiatiors, but now I think they just add to the charm of living in an old house, and are actually kind of cool. I'm with CB--embrace them! Nice shelf, btw!

Another vote with cooperbailey and stinky-I think the radiators look fine either completely uncovered or with a totally-boxed-in cover.

I don't have radiators, but I've always admired how they look in a room. I think for the summer months you need to add some houseplants to the shelf. Perfect window for them. A spider plant would look great there because they grow fast and will hang down.

Do you use the radiator in the winter? If not, the area screams for some houseplants! lol

Thanks everyone. I expected mixed reviews so I'm not surprised. I am so accustomed to having them covered, and literally every other one in the house is covered in some way, so partly I just think it looks odd to have just ONE be naked, and also I am accustomed to putting "stuff" on top of the old radiator cover, that area just seemed empty without Something.

Oakley, you're right, it needs something. I just took the pic right after I plopped the shelf on there. Yes, we use the radiators in winter but we have a few hardy plants that don't seem to mind.

sueb- actually the reviews were good of your idea of the shelf. It looks good. just some of us like nekkid best. But that is in my house, not yours! It is a clever idea.

I'm just wondering about one thing: Is it safe and energy-efficient to have the shelf sitting directly atop the radiator?

Or is there actually going to be some space between them once the shelf is on its brackets? There doesn't seem to be much space to play with, height-wise, between the bottom of the new window ledge and the top of where the radiator would be, but maybe that's an optical illusion?

The custom wood/metal grille radiator covers that were in the house I grew up in were built slightly larger all around so the warm air could circulate. Plus, my dad would occasionally "bleed" the radiators during winter, so he needed to be able to get the covers off easily.

If you have hot-water radiators, which sometimes require that, will you be able to access the valve (which is on the top) easily? Just keep that in mind when deciding where the brackets are to be installed.
