Radiator cover top -- how to dress up?
Comments (12)Your rad cover is very much like one my DH made for a house we had many years ago. I put plants on mine as well altho did 'cook' an azalea. Best to use good waterproof cache pots or plant pot saucers under them to prevent staining. You might consider using burlap as a runner as it's not necessary to sew it. Just trim evenly to the size you want and pull a few threads to make a fringe. You could use a product called "Fray Check" to prevent the fringe from further fraying. I've made two such runners from some leftover burlap I had bought for other crafts. Didn't use Fray Check so have to be very careful with them. Burlap is masculine and a bit rustic and I like it for my rustic/refined decor....See MoreHelp with off center radiator cover!
Comments (5)You have an off-center radiator, so what did you think would happen when an enclosure was built for it? It's a nice looking cover, and unless you told the person who built it that you wanted it bigger to be symmetrical, it's a logical outcome. If it were me, I wouldn't want it so big that it was symmetrical and blocking the lower part of both windows. Unless you want to re-pipe and move the radiator, I think you have the best minimalist solution....See MoreReasonable way to spruce up these hideously ugly radiator covers?
Comments (10)Paint! You will be amazed at the difference in look with a coat of white paint. At my prior house, I painted all the radiator covers to match the trim in the room. Bedrooms and baths were white but public spaces with natural woodwork got a coat of chestnut brown. Although the cast iron lumps are termed radiators, the majority of heat transfer is actually through convection. Radiator covers do make a difference in the amount of heat in the room. Certain designs are more efficient than a stand alone radiator but most covers restrict air movement. The most important feature is that the cover needs a clear area at the bottom to draw in cool air. Warm air rises and exits through a grill in the top or front of the cover. If you don't like the look of the covers, a simple shelf about 2/3 of the depth of the radiator, mounted about 6 inches above the radiator is a nice look....See MoreRadiator covers
Comments (4)@Elmer J Fudd: "That's a bizarre situation, wdccruise..." I was not suggesting anything other than a full-width cover the designer had drawn to hide the wall-mounted HVAC equipment, the concept of which I thought was superior to the radiator cover the OP photographed. The locations of the bed, desk and everything else in the drawing are irrelevant; I have no idea what other furniture the OP will place in his apartment or how it will be arranged. Looking again at the OP's photo, a full-width cabinet built the depth of the window alcove might actually be a useful (for hiding the radiator and providing storage) and attractive piece of furniture. With a top the height of the window sill that extended outward and to end of the alcove, it could appear fully built-in....See MoreUser
