Pre-hung Door Giving Me a Headache
Comments (9)No 6 foot level, just a 4 foot and 2 foot. Wasn't able to find the 6 foot at Home Depot or Lowes, still looking. Nevertheless, I have made some improvement by adding additional shims behind the hinge jamb, as well as putting in nails both in front and behind the door stop. The slab is now pretty much level, not sagging, and the gap between it and the top jamb is almost constant. Have a couple tight spots along the hinge jamb, but when I add some more nails, I know that they will go away. And I started nailing the latch side, and I know I can get that just right. So with all that in place, I checked the jambs in every way possible with the level. They are plumb and level, no issues at all, but the top of the slab on the latch side still sticks out by nearly a half-inch. Turns out the slab is warped, just a little. It's fine at the hinge side, and is flat at the bottom of the latch side, but I can see it's no longer level at the top of that side. I guess I bought a defective door, and I'm betting the other door I tried to install has the same issue. All this has gotten me pretty upset at Curtis Lumber. They have a number of stores in the area, but four of six closet doors were scratched, two of the pre-hung doors were chipped, and now at least one of the pre-hung slabs is warped. I haven't even checked three of the doors or any of the trim I bought. I thought supporting the local business would be a better bet than the national chain, but now I'm regretting the decision....See MorePre Hung Door Installation

If you do a lot of doors you a router to cut the hinge mortises with a jig to limit the cut out area. It takes longer to measure & position the jig tan to cut the mortise. The same for bring for latches. A jig is clamped to the door and locates and guides the hole saws. It can go very quickly. If you only have a door or two and no plans to do any more then the work is often done by hand. It takes about 10-20 minutes for each hinge mortise with a couple hand chisels. For a two hinge door you need about half an hour. Laying out and boring for the latch is about 15-20 minutes more. Remember to switch aides when boring for the knob hole when the pilot bit of the hole saw breaks through. Hole saw exit edges are rarely clean. Any adjustment to the size of the slab door are going to add time. In many cases the age of the house determines if stock doors will fit without adjustment. 'Standard' door sizes have wandered around (just a little, but it matters) as jamb designs have changed and settling can also affect jamb size and shape let alone 'adjustments' made at the time the house was built or latter). Most of the time slab door seems to rarely 'drop in' on a house 40-50-60 years old. Beveling the strike edge should only take a few minutes, but a hand power plane really speeds it up. It also allows you to wreck the door very quickly. You can wreck it slower with a hand plane....See MorePre-hung interior doors for a circa 1970s home improvement project?
Comments (6)We are replacing all of our interior doors as the original 1959 doors have seen better days. Our installer looked at all of our jams and only recommended replacing the ones where it is a double door (longer story and I am too lazy to type it out). So that is what we are doing. He has replaced about 75% of them. He will be out next week week to complete the project. We only purchased solid doors for entry into a room and hollow for closet doors. We started this process literally days pre pandemic. We were waiting on additional doors as the manufacturer had shut down for a few months (all doors are custom fit)....See MoreNew construction pre hung doors- black hinges
Comments (12)I'd either live with the nickel hinges or wait for the black, but would not try to change them later, especially if you have solid doors. You would have to get the screws in exactly as they were before, which is almost impossible, or they may be lose, and it's not easy to adjust so the door closes correctly. Personally I'd take the ones that are available, because you never know how long you may be waiting....See More- 9 years ago
